      Kuwait-City, Couchsurfing Party

      Die Oper ist Architektonisch sehr cool. Auch sie ist heute zu und so sehen wir sie nur von außen.
      Wikipedia:

      „Das Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Cultural Centre ist ein multidisziplinärer öffentlicher Raum, der dem Amiri Diwan gehört, und bietet eine Reihe von Veranstaltungen in den Bereichen Musik, Theater, Film, Workshops und Spoken Word an.

      Die Fertigstellung des Kulturkomplexes, zu dem Theater, Konzertsäle, Musikzentren, Konferenz- und Ausstellungsräume, Kinos, Bibliotheken, ein Zentrum für historische Dokumente und ein öffentlicher Park gehören, dauerte zwei Jahre und umfasste 214.000 m² mit einem Budget von 775 Millionen US-Dollar.“

      Zur gleichen Zeit bekommen wir eine Mail das dort wo wir gerade sind heute Abend eine Event stattfinden soll.
      Ok, wir sind noch was früh dran und fahren noch in die Avenue Mall, dort ist ein Carrefour zum einkaufen.

      Auch hier gibt es wieder alles, sogar eine Bäckerei mit Walnussbrot (8,-€) und anderen Broten.
      Der Carrefour ist riesig, bei den Preisen kaufen wir nur das wichtigste.

      Dann wieder zurück zum Beach an der Opera. Inzwischen sind ein paar Leute da und wir erfahren, das ist ein Couchsurfing Event, wo sich Leute aus verschiedenen Ländern treffen und Kontakte knüpfen können.
      Wir treffen Leute aus der Türkei, Jordanien, Ägypten, Kuwait, Holland, Belgien und Deutschland.

      Kuwait, Mirror Art Museum

      Gestern war ja zu, aber für heute haben wir online gebucht. Eine Italienische Frau hat in Kuwait ein Haus komplett umgestaltet und daraus ein Kunst und Spiegelmuseum gemacht.

      1966 angefangen und 1998 fertiggestellt. Sie hat 77 Tonen Spiegel verarbeitet. Die Räume sind sehr schön gestaltet, auch Küche und Klo sind mit Spiegeln voll.
      Zusätzlich hat Sie noch viel mit Lichteffekten gearbeitet.

      In der oberen Etage sind Kunstwerke ihres Mannes zu sehen, der in den 70er Jahren schon sehr kritisch auf die Welt geblickt hat.

      Wie alt die Frau jetzt ist, haben wir nicht rausgefunden, aber das Haus ist Ihr Leben, das merkt man mit ihr an.

      First couple of days - Return to Kuwait

      After arriving back in Kuwait late on Saturday evening, after a couple of years away, some things are oddly familiar whilst others are strange. My old mucka Khin Wee Chen graciously picked me up from the airport for the drive back to his place. I'll be staying with him in his spare room in Salmiya until moving on next Friday 25th November. Excellent base, excellent host.
      Sunday was an easy, restful day of catching up with old colleagues at Gulf University. Oh how I love a bit of gossip. The place is broadly the same, but the organisation has taken a turn in an odd direction. Oh well, we must all move on ;)
      Eating, a bit of walking, and more eating. Dropped my phone on the loo floor in the restaurant. Oh b*gg*r, I smashed the front screen good n proper. (Probably a repair/replacement in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore.)
      Monday - brunch with my old GUST mates Khin Wee, Ildiko Kaposi and Fahad Al Sumait. It was great to catch up with them, hear their news and a have a right good natter. And thanks for picking up the breakfast tab Fahad. What fine colleagues indeed. There's great talent in Kuwait, if only it was fully utilised.
      Whilst strolling down the coastal path in Salmiya, I managed to grab a few shots of an air display team doing colourful loop-the-loops over the city across the bay.

      Kuwait-City

      Bis Kuwait-City sind es noch 120 km.

      Auf einer 3 spurigen Autobahn ging es erstmal durch nichts. Ein paar Dormedare am Straßenrand und Bohrtürme und ganz viele Strommasten.

      Wir sind direkt zu den Kuwait-Towers gefahren. Davor ist ein McDonald und wir hatten noch nichts außer Süßigkeiten gegessen. Zweimal Veggie-Menü mit Salat 6,5 Kuwait-Dollar (ca. 21 €)

      Als Nächstes fahren wir zu einer Mall. Als wir reingehen sind wir im großen Fischmarkt von Kuwait. Sehr beeindruckend. Daneben ein Saal mit Obst und Gemüse

      Hier decken wir uns erstmal für die nächsten Tage ein.
      Dann wird Ann von einem Einheimischen angesprochen, woher Sie kommt?
      Deutschland, er liebt Deutschland ist war schon mehrfach in München. Wenn wir irgendetwas brauchen, könnten wir ihn anrufen.

      Als Nächstes kaufen wir eine Simkarte, alles recht unkompliziert.

      Die Läden in der Mall überraschen uns, ein Campingausrüster, ein Malgeschäft. Natürlich auch Mode und im Erdgeschoss ein großer Lebensmittel Laden. Hier bekommt man alles, alle Deutschen Marken sind vertreten, aber die Preise haben es in sich. Obstsaft 9€, Lindt Schokolade 8€. Wenn man Geld hat ein Schlaraffenland.

      Überall stehen Inder und bieten sich an den Einkaufswagen für Dich zu schieben, oder für Dich die Einkäufe zu machen. Verrückt.

      Dann brauchen wir noch einen Platz zum Schlafen, an der Promenade gibt es überall Parkplätze, die liegen aber an der Hauptstraße und sind sehr laut. An der Mall werden wir weggeschickt und letztlich finden wir außerhalb an einer Sackgasse einen Platz mit Blick auf den Golf.

      Ein wahnsinnig Kontrastreicher Tag geht zu Ende.

      Und wir sind auf der Arabischen Halbinsel…. Wahnsinn!

      Abu Dhabi's got a big building

      I'd only driven past this place, the Grand Mosque, years ago. Lots of people have said it's not to be missed, so I made the trip.
      It's vast.
      I got there early and avoided the hordes of tourists.
      There's a long walk just to get from the exterior gate to the entrance. Then you have to go underground which leads to a shopping mall, of all things. This shouldn't be surprising but it seems odd. There are trinkets to buy, and those dirhams won't spend themselves.
      Smiling tour guides shuffled me and a few other punters through museum-type galleries until, at last, I emerged at the surface into the mosque itself.
      Blimey. Did I say it's big.
      You don't have to get off on that religion thing to be impressed by beautiful and effective architecture.
      Well worth the effort - early before it gets hot.
      And as one pic shows, it seems they'll let in anyone.      Read more

      Lots of sightseeing (and walking)

      Today I began my sightseeing with the Kuwait National Museum. It is free for a reason...still quite a work in progress. But it had some cool ancient artifacts along with a cool exhibit that displayed the various traditional professions of Kuwaitis. A lot of aspects reminded me of the museums in Bahrain and Oman, so I guess they share many similarities. Then I walked along the boardwalk which was ominous due the extreme amount of dust obliterating the sun. Might be coming from the dust storms in Iraq. Some people tossed bread in the water and the fish were viciously attacking the bread so you could see it disappearing in real time. Actually quite entertaining to watch. As I walked along the coast, there were a ton of people in the park, you would almost think a big event was supposed to be happening but I think it's just where expat workers hang out on the weekend. I attempted to make my way to the cultural center, but it was hard to find the entrance so I did a lot of unnecessary walking. Everything is unnecessarily complicated here with poor city planning. I finally made it inside and there were some nice restaurants as well as a cool fountain show that reminded me of Vegas. Then I walked all the way to the Old Market and got dinner with a new Italian friend at Freej Swaileh. Afterwards, we walked around the souq and got karak tea before heading over to the marina in in Salmiya and walking along there. By the end of the day, I had done 21,000 steps ugh. But it was an all-around fun day!Read more

      2019 war mein grosses Reisejahr. Schon im Januar war ich viel unterwegs. Auf dem Weg nach Dubai hatte ich einen Zwischenstopp in Kuweit eingelegt.
      Die arabischen Kleinstaaten sind schon auch komisch. Jeder der arbeitet, ist ein Ausländer. Die Einheimischen waren in den Shopping-Centern unterwegs. Ein Tag war dann auch genug, um quasi alles zu sehen.Read more

      More fun in Kuwait - if that's possible.

      Kuwait is still big on shopping malls. The snaps are inside The Avenues, and some very poorly grabbed shots of buildings in the Salmiya district.
      On Wednesday, had a lazy day before hitting the Maritime Museum for a spot of playing pirates on a big old dhao. This was followed by a visit to Souk Al-Mubarakiya in the old part of Kuwait City.Read more
