• Hotel Check-in and Inspection

    22 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

After we arrived with the Scenic Railway, we were brought to our hotels. I was staying in the Pullman Cairns International, in a single room! And dear lord, I came into the room and was in love. It was so stylish, so spacious but not too much, it has a nice vibe to it and it was all just for me. The people at AOT really wanted to pamper us here.
But unfortunately, I couldn't enjoy my room for long, as we were about to go to yet another hotel to eat dinner and then inspect. We drove to the Novotel Cairns Oasis Resort, which has a fabulous, laid back atmosphere about it. We've got colourful cocktails and some delicious taco-buffet and dessert to full our tummies. It was a great atmosphere in the group. The site inspection was actually rather short, but still interesting, as I usually know Novotels only as airport hotels. But that one in Cairns is completely different - in a good way.

  • Kuranda - Scenic Views and Animals

    22 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

After eating the "morning tea" we drove further to jump on the Skyrail to Kuranda. We relaxed into the gondolas and rode our way up the hills of the big Wet Tropics (which includes e.g. Daintree or Barossa NP, it's all the same rainforest, just different names basically). Half-way up, we took a quick look onto the different plants and trees growing in the rainforest. It's rather fascinating what kind of tactics each and every plant evolved over the millions of years to get to the most sunlight. We also were on the lookout to the Barossa Falls, which looked stunning.
Then we took of with another gondola of Skyrail to Kuranda, a village far up the top of the Wet Tropics. We briefly visited Koala Gardens and Birds World, two small but nice parks to have not too many people around and time to interact with the animals. Then it was time for lunch again and gosh was I full! I definitely wouldn't starve whilst being here...
Then we jumped on to the Kuranda Scenic Railway which took us back to Cairns giving us some amazing views and some chill time in the waggon.

  • Hartley's Crocodile Adventures

    22 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

This morning we had to check out of the Oaks' and headed straight towards Hartley's Crocodile Adventure. On the way there, the serpentine roads made me so sick again that I had to concentrate rather hard to follow the others around the zoo-like area. We saw lots of crocs again (no matter the size), as well as super interesting reptiles like komodos or venomous snakes. We could also pet a wombat called Tonka which actually has a shield underneath its fur to protect from potential predators. And for most of my folks, the taking of their photo whilst holding a koala was their highlight of the day. I must admit I'm not a big fan of zoos and especially not of using the animals to generate even more cash, so I didn't quite like that bit. However, I still took the chance, so I can't really play the devil's advocate here.
My favourite Australian animals might actually be the crocs, just because nobody can tell them what to do, everyone pays them the respect they deserve and whoever is stupid enough to do not, becomes croc-biscuit.
We also had the chance to go into a private sector of the park where we could directly interact with the kangaroos and wallabys. I don't know, there is something so chill about kangaroos, like they are just some random hippie dude relaxing on the beach side, checking out girls. It's so fun to watch them.
After our tour there, we had some of the best "morning teas" ever - with savory croissants, little cucumber sandwiches, éclairs, muffins, sushi etc. And the meat-lovers could try some crocodile - it apparently tastes a bit like chicken, they said. I would much rather just stick with watching them when their alive.

  • Cape Tribulation - Surrealness

    21 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ 🌬 25 °C

After we were stuffed, we drove to Cape Tribulation. Here in the late 18th century, the well-known explorer James Cook hit the Great Barrier Reef and damaged his ship the Endeavor. That's also the only place in the world, where two World Heritage Sites are found side by side: Daintree NP and the Great Barrier Reef.
It looks so much like a green screen or a Windows background that I just can't believe it. It looks as if I could touch it and realizer that it's all just painted on a piece of paper. It's crazy. But it actually can be rather dangerous because of the boxed jelly fish or the salties that are lurking in the sea for you. After we made sure, nobody gets eaten, we went to eat something ourselves. At the Daintree Ice Cream Company, we found ourselves next to some delicious ice cream with flavors like coconut, strawberry, black sapote (the one looking like chocolate) and coffee cherry (my fav).
Finally, we made our way back home and had 2hrs resting time before we met up with the other group in our hotel for a rather filling dinner.

  • Daintree NP - Jungle and River

    21 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Lana and I woke up early today, going to breakfast to strengthen ourselves for the day.
Today our group would drive to the Daintree National Park. We drove past huge fields of sugar canes that has just the right weather conditions in that part of Queensland to grow. Unfortunately, we don't get Australian sugar in Germany as it is mostly exported to Japan and South Korea.
First we went to see the Mossman Gorge and learn a bit about the different plants and creatures living there. I still have the feeling, that I'm in a big, special zoo where everything is planned - it feels so surreal. The huge boulders in the Gorge are moved aside by the water. Millimeter for millimeter, but still. We also saw lots of huge spiders and learned how scientists melked some of them to create an armor and a cloak from spider silk. I really love science.
We had some morning tea and drove further to the River Cruise along the Daintree River. We saw some tiny baby crocs, hiding behind the mangroves, and huge crocs swimming casually next to us.
Our bus had to cross the river by ferry, as that was the only most direct way to the northern part of the Daintree NP. After we weren't eaten by the crocs, we jumped back on the coach which drove us up a very bumpy serpentine road to the Wula Wugirriga lookout where we had a stunning view over Port Douglas.
Driving a bit further, we stopped at the Heritage Lodge to eat our very delicious lunch and dip our fingers into the cool creek afterwards. Luckily, you can swim in the creek without worrying about the crocs, but only 3 miles down the river, everywhere are signs to beware about the crocs. I actually think, they are becoming my favourite animals!

  • 4 Mile Beach

    20 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

As I've been waiting for my room to get ready, I decided to explore the 4 Mile Beach that was just behind the golf course in front of the hotel. So, I took the towel from reception and strolled along a jungle-like path. I saw lots of geckos hiding away between the bushes and coconuts that luckily haven't fallen onto my head. Then I saw a light at the end of the tunnel and my goodness was that beautiful! I don't know why, but I have the feeling I'm on Hawaii because of how the 4 Mile Beach looks. Wide sandy beach and the hills on the other side. I don't know... Maybe both places are look-alikes. After the coral ocean went from feeling cold to warm, I wandered back to the hotel - with a fresh soul and mind.
Finally, my room was ready. Good for them as I became rather hangry. When I saw the kitchenette, I thought I'd maybe could go to a supermarket and cook something for myself. However, when I googled it, the next supermarket was 2km away - ain't gonna happen, darling... So, I figured that it was time to bite in the sour apple (as we say in German) and buy a highly overpriced pizza.
I just finished eating that, when my room mate Lana arrived. We hit it off from the get-go and chatted the whole time, finding more and more things we have in common. We went to the pool, didn't go into it completely though as it was rather fresh. A while later, it was time to meet the others and go to our first event: The Port Douglas Carnivale.
It's a festival kind of event which takes place over a couple of days and has lots of different things included, e.g. kite flying, dog contests or musical acts. Today, we were enjoying a picnic-like dinner in a secluded area (with Security guards - we felt like VIPs), listening to some famous rock band playing in front of us. It's been quite cool, also with talking to some of the other people being on the trip. It's interesting how easy it sometimes gets getting to know strangers.

  • Oaks Port Douglas Resort

    20 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

After the most scenic drive from Cairns to Port Douglas (where I didn't take any pics as the windows were rather dirty), I arrived at my hotel for the next two nights, Port Oaks. It has a really chill vibe to it which I found rather intoxicating until I couldn't get into my room early (although an Early-Check in was booked). But when I finally got into my room and saw a washing machine and a dryer, all was good again and I even decided to get a way overpriced pizza from the pool bar - just because the next supermarket was 2km away though.Okumaya devam et

  • Flying through Landscapes

    20 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

I woke up at 3.30am to get myself ready for my flight to Cairns. I gave called a taxi for 4.30am, so that I would arrive at time for my flight. From Germany, I'm used to being at least 2hrs beforehand at the airport. When I arrived at DRW and asked where to check-in, they told me I would have to wait another hour until 5.40am for the check-in. So small is the DRW that you need for the complete process of checking in and going through the security check less than an hour. Insane!
But I used my time wisely, calling my mom and writing down my blog. Time flew and I was through everything, taking off.
And I was just taking lots of pics because of the different landscapes of Australia, so here you go.
The service on the TAS flight was actually better than expected. I've got some fried veggie corn-zucchini thingys and as dessert a Lindt (!) chocolate. I don't want to know how expensive that chocolate is around here...
After landing in the most stunning scenery of an airport ever, I immediately found my driver and Robyn from the AOT FAM-Trip who greeted me dearly. I was the first to arrive today, she told me. She would live on that airport today...
But my driver and I took off to one of the most picturesque drives of my life.

  • Litchfield NP Pt 2 - Feeding Monsters

    19 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ⛅ 31 °C

After lunch, we drove back a bit to get to Wangi Falls (you pronounce it like one guy). They usually are the most visited place to swim beneath a waterfall. However, as there might still be salties lingering in the water there, it was still closed for swimming. But anyway, we could enjoy the magnificent view of the waterfall itself.
I talked with some more elderly people about my travels and problems and was always positively surprised by the good chats we had.
Then it was time for our last stop of the day: Howard Springs.
The whole time, I understood Alice Springs, and I was quite confused because of that. But when I read the sign, I could calm down again. We wouldn't drive into the Outback today.
We visited the Nature Park there to feed the barramundi in the lake. However, someone wanted to be fed first. The boss iguana lady there was laying on the bridge (the only bridge that would get us to the other side) and warming up. Obviously, she didn't want to leave her spot, so our whole group lined up behind Anthony (our driver) and waited for his orders. One of the others tried to scare her away with his feet, but that only made her even crankier. So, Anthony decided to bribe his way through. He took out the fish for the barramundi and gave her bit by bit, walking slowly in the aimed direction. Finally, she sat down in the bushes next to the bridge and we could all go through.
We had a blast feeding the barramundi, watching them jump and eat the fish. The turtles next to them looked so funny with their way-too-long necks, paddling about.
When we wanted to get back to our coach however, the cranky iguana sat on her spot again. She wouldn't leave it, so Anthony took his last fish (he spared it in case that would happen) and tried to bribe her again. This time, only he got through. "I'm gonna get the coach to the other side, go there", he shouted across the lake. And so we made our way to avoid the iguana lady and, with laughter, hop onto the coach on the other side.
Safe in our bus, we took off, going back to Darwin.
When dropping off all the other people, I realized just how many murals were in Darwin. Nearly every other house had one painted on it. That made Darwin look way nicer and chill than without it and I decided to like at least that about Darwin, if not its heat.

  • Litchfield NP Pt 1 - Falling Down

    19 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya

Today I went on another day trip with AAT Kings, this time our destination was the Litchfield National Park.
Entering the coach, I saw that this tour was way more diverse in age, which was a little bit of a bummer. The atmosphere is completely different when there are just older people (and one young - me). Now you could really feel that the people were more divided, it wasn't such a great vibe as to Kakadu NP.
Our first stop was the Cathedral Termite Mounds. These little see-through insects can build 5m tall mounds that just look astonishing. It's weather resistant which is very important considering the unbearable heat in dry season and floods in wet season. Another rather fascinating kind of termites are the Magnetic Termites who build their mounds always in north-south direction so that one side of it is always cool. Amazing, isn't it?
The next stop was Florence Falls where we could go swimming if we wanted to. That was the cue I was waiting for!
I went to the viewing platform to overlook the waterfalls, then went down the 135 steps. It was a pretty heavy stream, so I decided to not swim directly in the Florence Falls plunge pool but to go up the Shadow Creek Walk and find another plunge pool there. Strolling up the hill, I saw how the vegetation turned from a lush and vibrant green to a burnt black vastness that looks very unhealthy, though it is just preventing uncontrollable bush fires to destroy the beautiful nature. It still looks quite odd, to be fair.
I finally found a good place to go into the cold, icy water (I'm sure it was not less than 20°C but when you're in 30°C heat, it feels like ice at first) and jumped because of a fish that was nibbling curiously on my feet.
The water was so clear, I could see every single fish move around without any trouble. This pause was quite refreshing.
After relaxing and watching the fish a bit, I made my way back to the coach. Whilst my bare feet hurt on the ground, my body dried off in the midday sun, so that it was rather easy to change back to my normal clothes.
When putting my bathing suit onto a stone in the sun to dry, I watched a little lizard making its way through the leaves. Then we had to go to the next stop: Tolmer Falls.
It's the highest single-fall in Litchfield NP and not available for swimming as it is a protected area. However, you've got quite a stunning view over the south of Litchfield NP from here.
After this quick stop, we made our way back to the coach to get something in our stomachs.
We ate at Litchfield Café, and I sat down next to an elder couple who quickly started talking to me. We talked about our origins, our plans, ours trip so far. And I shared the apple story with them. Again, I got lots of sympathy and disbelief that the penalty was so much out of proportion. Then, Robyn remembered that the man sitting behind them in the coach used to work for exactly that Infringement Unit. She just went to him, explaining my situation and asked what I could do. Answer: If I got the declaration document in English instead of German (my mother tongue) I would have a good case. So, my mood was lifted and I was very grateful for elder people's chattiness.

  • Chilling in Darwin

    18 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Today was a lazy chill-day. I slept in till 11am and ate some bread and dip again (for 3 days now). Then I decided to take on the hassle to call the Government because of my Infringement to ask them about changing my penalty. I went to the hostels reception (btw I'm staying in the Youthshack), asked for the phone and called. The government lady told me to write an email (couldn't they have written it on it, that they needed everything on paper?) which I then did. After around an hour, I was done with defending myself and now it was in the government hands whether they would actually punish me for an apple or not.
Today was my problem solving day, so I went on to look for the mobile phone service store where I wanted to ask about the stupidity of the SIM cards need to be verified by an Australian Visa card. I went at lunchtime (which was rather stupid) and did find nothing. The store didn't exist anymore. Fabulous. So I walked back to the hostel, sweating as much as I could, and taking some pictures of colourful murals. Then I had the brilliant idea to get myself some ice cream, which I immediately did and ate. Less sweating.
I decided that it was way too hot outside, so I stayed in bed until 4.30pm, relaxing and trying to send a refund form to Coles about the SIM card. They didn't want me to complain so they wouldn't even receive their form. I just couldn't send it. It really was becoming ridiculous.
After eating another ice cream, I finally went outside again, melting in the heat. I put my "alright" hat on and strolled through the park at the coast. I saw the stoniest beach ever and some very weird hens. Then I went on to my actual goal: Mindil Beach Sunset Markets. They are only twice a week and luckily I was in Darwin on one of these days. It was quite a long walk, especially in the simmering heat. However, I made it there and was appalled by all these people being there as well. There were international food trucks - Chinese, Thai, Greek, American, Hungarian, you name it - and lots of art and cloth stands. Some musicians played their guitars and the people filed down the Mindil Beach as if there were no other beaches around town. I didn't quite understand all the noise about the Mindil Beach (Sunset Markets), but I was still glad to get a Smoothie there to take me back to the hostel. The walk felt nearly endless, but I made it in the end.

  • Kakadu NP Pt. 3 - Ancient Art

    17 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☁️ 34 °C

We arrived at the hight of the heat at Nourlangie, an Ancient Art Gallery by the Aboriginal People of that land. To protect myself from the heat, I brought my dad's hat with me which honestly just looks ridiculous on anybody. Jim went to the toilet with me and I asked him "Don't I look ridiculous with this hat?" and he looked at me, scrutinising me. Then he answered "No, there are a lot of Australian wearing these kinds of hats at the beach. It's actually very smart, it protects the ears and neck as well." After that, I felt a bit better about the hat. We learned a lot about the makings of the art (e.g. the used Wallaby blood for the red paint) and the stories behind them. As non-aboriginal people though, we were only granted access to the "first story" of the paintings which is the most superficial side of the story. But we've learned that every story tells a moral for the people, e.g. "Don't go out at night" or "Don't sleep with your sister and then kill her for it"... Very deep, indeed.
It was cool being there though, as the vibe of the site is just very spiritual. And as you're right under a huge rock, you feel very tiny in comparison.
Afterwards, we could go to a nearby lookout if we wanted to and the Australian seniors surprised me and the guide once more. Nearly half of them wanted to go there and so we went. It was quite a fascinating view, overlooking the vast land and the ancient rocks. Pretty dope.
At last, the day was over and we could jump back on the bus to leave half of our people behind (just a resort, we aren't criminals). Jim left the bus patting on my shoulder and saying "Don't you worry, your hat looks alright" which I found to be very sweet. The rest of us got a nasty downgrade for the bus home. Still, I was so tired, that I fell asleep shortly after starting the ride back to Darwin. After another 2,5hrs, we were finally back in town and I could get into bed.

  • Kakadu NP Pt. 2 - Crocs all over

    17 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

After leaving our pilots behind, we jumped on the Yellow Water Cruise with Kathrin. She was fantastic at her job, showing us the saltwater crocodiles, birds and plants at the Yellow Water Billabong, the Southern and Western Alligator River. We've learned that the explorer who found the salties in the rivers thought that they were alligators which led to naming the river wrongly. I guess renaming is difficult in Australia. They actually have lots of weird naming stories, one of them being the city of Humpty Duo, which got it's name after a journalist writing about the cattle farm Humpty Didoo (idk if that's correctly spelled) and spelled it Humpty Duo... Great stories there.
Anyway, we saw lots of salties, mostly laying around in the shadows to cool themselves off, or in the sun to heat themselves up. Having their mouth open helps them cooling off as the wind is blowing through it then. I never really understood the interest in crocodiles before seeing them so close by. They look ancient and their vibe is very ancient as well. It's actually very difficult to age them properly, especially the females. Their bones are like trees and have rings in them, from which you can tell if a croc had lots to eat or not. But after a while, they stop growing so it is nearly impossible to put a finger on a certain age. However, scientists think they could get about 100 years old. It's also very uncommon to see baby crocs as they are very endangered. Their own mother would eat them if she would find them... That's awful, don't you think? Well, after we spotted enough of the salties, Kathrin went on and told us about native bamboo and the water lillies that would die off soon, going further into the dry season. It's actually enormous, how much the landscape changes there. At the end of dry season, Kathrin told us that the water will sink about 2m, and at the end of wet season the water would have risen up to 4m higher than it was right now. It's insane. When going back to the buses, another Guide named Jessica told us that the water would rise so high, that all the streets and fences and platforms we currently stood on and walked over, would be flooded and not seen. The fence was completely rusted because of that. And the biggest problem coming with the water are the salties that can get super dangerous for humans. Who doesn't have to be too afraid of them though, are the birds. As long as they are not stupid enough to fly and land directly next to them, crocs don't like eating birds as they can't digest the feathers and would need to spit them out. One of the bird species there is the Whistling Bird. They look like very serene ducks but they would actually be very bad ducks because they hate water. Another species is the Jaribu that can't be called like that anymore because the South American Jaribu bird has the "right of its name". I did forget the new name for the Australian Jaribu though...
What I didn't forget about was the two aboriginal words that Kathrin told us at the end of the cruise. The first one is Gamak which means something like Thank you. And the other one is Bor Bor, which means Until we see each other again (or less dramatic: See you later, alligator).
I actually think it's really cool how she and also our bus driver this morning, have acknowledged the Aboriginal people and the custodians of the land. It really makes you understand the importance of respect between the aboriginal and non-aboriginal people.
After riding the boat up and down the falsely named rivers, I was through about 4L of water. I was sweating like hell, I was thirsty af and couldn't stop drinking and spilling water all over me to cool me down. I'm really not much of a heat person and that Top End warmth really got on my nerves.
Luckily, after the very hot cruise, we could cool off at lunch at the Cooinda Lodge. I sat down with my new four friends, eating nice cool food and discuss German politics and phrases. After a while, Gerry pointed out one of the waitresses and said "I think she's German." Not long after that, his friend Jim just asked the girl if she actually was German and Gerry was right. We started talking in German about her time in Australia so far and she told me that she's been here for about four years now. I was quite impressed, I didn't know one could stay in Australia that long of a time. Maybe Covid did some good for her in that regard. She didn't miss Germany and just loved the Australian lifestyle... Well, I guess I see some points but I can't judge yet. Maybe in three weeks I would have an opinion on that.
After lunch, we gathered again to drive to our last stop: Nourlangie or Burrunkuy.

  • Kakadu NP Pt. 1 - From Above

    17 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

After a night without much sleep (as I couldn't stop thinking about the shitty start of my trip) I had to wake up at 5.30am to make myself ready for the first day-tour. At 6am I was going towards the Hilton Hotel where the AAT Kings bus picked me up. The direction: Kakadu National Park. Entering the bus I saw that I let the age range drop by at least 20 years, as all the other passengers where at least 60 years old. However, they were super chill and funny, and I immediately became friends with a group of four. On the way to the NP (when I didn't fall asleep) I saw lots of cute little wallabys but couldn't take a picture as the bus drive too quickly. Our first short stop was a toilet break, where I wandered around and found not only some amazing rural decorations but also great bathroom staff. Off we drove to our first real stop: Jaribu Airport. I booked the optional scenic flight over Kakadu NP, which I was very happy about. The ones remaining on the bus would just drive to the next station and not really see much else than already. So I grabbed my water bottle (vital in this kind of heat) and camera and sat next to our driver Ivan. There I reflected on the ridiculousness if calling their highways highways. For me, these roads were normal, if not quite unsafe, country roads... And it was quite amusing that Ivan didn't know why they use km/h although the UK uses mph. After some more chit-chat, we arrived at the airport and got our safety instructions. As I've learned - for the Australians nothing is more important than safety. After that, Ivan called his group out, which included me. Our plane was tiny in comparison to the A380 on my way from Frankfurt to Singapore and over 30 years old... It still looked safe though. When Ivan asked who would like to sit on the Co-Pilots seat, my hand shot in the air and the other lady interested in the spot, gave it to me very amicably.
After boarding the plane (I was not allowed to touch the steering wheel or pedals as they still functioned), we slowly rolled on to the strip and took off. It was weird, sitting in front of a plane, Ivan turning and churning on all these buttons and regulators that I couldn't understand. But it was really cool! The vastness of this land was immense. I mean... The NP is as big as Wales, what the heck? It was all just savannah bushland and rock formation, and one could say it looks quite boring. But it is so immense, so never-ending, that you can feel the importance of the land through and through. We flew to the Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls, flying nearly 90 degrees to the bottom so that everyone could see. At the horizon you could see bushfires, burning down the dead grass, leaving behind an open space for new plants to grow on. It's a tradition to burn the grass away in the Dry season. That prevents uncontrollable fires to burst out and burn everything down. It's still weird to think of fire and flames to be helping in that regard, but it definitely makes sense.
We finally landed, said good bye to our pilot Ivan and drove to our next station - Yellow Waters Billabong Cruises.

  • The Worst Entry Ever

    16 Mayıs 2023, Avustralya ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

The first 12hrs flight from Frankfurt to Singapore were never ending. I watched about 6 movies and couldn't sleep for a minute. Then I had 1,5hrs transit time in Singapore, which I tried to use as little nap time, but couldn't. I'm just not made for such long journeys...
The next flight took only 4,5hrs but was worse than ever. Because I was so sleep deprived, I was shivering all over my body and I felt super sick. When the stewardess came and offered me my breakfast, I couldn't eat a bit because the smell made me feel even sicker. I hid away in the toilet to let out some cries. I was way too tired to control my emotions anymore. When I came back, I asked the stewardess to take away my untouched breakfast and give me some water. Then, after a while, I just wanted to eat my banana and so I did. Then we got a form to fill out for the Australian Immigration. I was wondering why I paid for the ETA up front and what that was all about. I filled it out, signed it and put it away.
Finally, we landed in Darwin and I was so happy to nearly be able to just lay down in a proper bed and sleep for ages. However, the Australians had different plans for me.
First, I had to go through immigration which took ages, then I lined up for a backpack control. "Don't be sorry, just declare" was on posters all over the place. My mind couldn't really comprehend what that meant at the time. Now I know...
When it was my turn, the officer asked me a bunch of questions and then I said "I'm sorry, this is wrong. I forgot I've got an apple in my backpack." I've just realized that I crossed No on the question "Do I have to declare fruit etc." instead of Yes. Next to the banana that I ate to not fall unconscious, I completely forgot the apple that I took from the Maritim Hotel the other day. And now, I was in huge trouble. He asked me more questions that I just answered as best as I could in my state of mind. It wasn't good enough it seemed. He brought another officer, discussing right in front of me. "It's your decision, 50/50 really", said the other one. I looked in my officers eyes that turned cold. "She knew about the apple and lied on the document. That's no 50/50." I was fucked.
He went off to the computer, taking my apple with him. He was tipping and tipping, until I felt so weak that I had to sit down. I was watching every other person leaving the room one after another, unbothered. They still discussed and tipped on their computer. After an eternity, he came back, laid some papers in front of me and told me about my penalty. 1.650 AUD... That was about 900-1000€. For an apple. "We don't have any apple diseases, you could have brought apple diseases, you shouldn't have lied on that document." I didn't lie! I screamed in my head, but I was too tired and too lost for words. Sure, that would be the most expensive apple of my whole life. What the fuck was wrong with these people? I understood that it could be dangerous, but I didn't do it intentionally. How could the penalty be so much out of any proportion?
With the last bit of energy I had, I tried to hold back the tears, grabbed my stuff and my penalty and went out of the room. I knew, I had to get somehow to my hostel. But before, I wanted to change some cash and get myself a SIM card. It turned out that the airport was smaller than my backpack and that they had nothing I needed. So I just went outside and stopped a taxi. The driver drove me to my hostel, I paid and got my hostel keys. I was so tired, not having slept in over 24 hours. But I needed some food and a SIM card, so I walked the little walk to the next supermarket (Coles) and got some food. I also chose the next best SIM card I could get a hold on and went back to the hostel. Then I wanted to charge my phone but the world charger that stated to have Australia in it, didn't. Obviously, I didn't bring the other charger with me that would definitely have had the Australian charger size. So, I had to go to Coles again and buy me another charger. Back in the hostel, I tried to activate the SIM card but why would anything work today? "Sorry, we need an Australian credit card for a verification." What the actual heck?! I bought a 30 day valid SIM card. In which world would an Australian need a 30 day SIM card? These SIM cards are made for tourists and as far as I'm concerned, most tourists don't have a credit card for the country they are travelling to! Why was this country against me? Why was everything so shit? Why did I ever went on this journey? Why couldn't I have just stayed home and went to Norway with Seb and Aluna just as we've had planned? I missed them so much and was trapped in this shitty country that didn't seem to want me here. I wanted to go home, badly. I couldn't get a grip of myself and called my mom and Seb, crying, telling them my story and just tried to calm myself down. Didn't work. That would be an amazing night...

By the way: I could take the apple with me in the end. So, I really do hope that the officer investigated it for any diseases. Otherwise, I could not understand why they'd fine me such a huge amount of money when it wouldn't matter in the end if it's bad for the Australian environment or not...

  • The Pleasures of Flying

    15 Mayıs 2023, Almanya ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Today I woke up early to have a stressless start. I went down to the restaurant for breakfast although I felt super sick and didn't want to eat. After a Latte Macchiato without cocoa, and some bread, I didn't feel much better. I was so nervous that my stomach signalled me "Alert, alert" all the time. Nevertheless, I left my hotel room, checked out and went to the next tube station where I took the U4 to the main station to then enter an ICE to the airport. And my god, the Frankfurt airport is so huge and there are no good signs that would lead the way around. I had to ask two people to get to the Check-in. And then I stood in the queue for about an hour until they finally decided to open another Check-in so that the mile-long queue would shorten more quickly. I really hate waiting... After finally being checked in, I wanted to go to the Security Check, but the one for B was closed, so I had to go miles to the one for A. After that (tbh much shorter queue) I had to go back to B, yeah... But honestly, when you always have to walk miles and miles to the next place you have to be at, and then have to wait for that being done, the time flies...Okumaya devam et

  • Starting earlier than planned

    14 Mayıs 2023, Almanya ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

When the email from my boss-boss came, I was hooked within seconds. Our partner AOT offered a 12-day FAM-Trip to Australia which was divided into two modules. The second one was stsrting in Cairns, going to Tasmania and ending in Perth. THAT was the shit I wanted to do! I asked my boss Christian if I could apply for one of the spots and he said "Can't be worse than a No". So I applied and it did come worse - they said Yes, you can go! Shoot, now I had to decide whether I could afford the flights to Down Under and the time. Originally, Seb and I wanted to go on a Van-Adventure to Norway with Aluna, but now that option became realistic. I had to decide within two days and God it was a lot of back and forth... But in the end, I decided to go. So I used the two weeks of Norway holiday, and packed them around the FAM-Trip as I wouldn't fly around the whole world only for 12 days. I would be gone for a whole month now... That was crazy. Especially with Aluna... But I would get a hold on this problem.
The day to depart drew closer and closer and in the Friday before my flight, I got the bad news "The Deutsche Bahn would strike for 50h straight" and my train to Frankfurt would definitely be in that time... Shit. Thank goodness, I've got some connections with my dad. As he works for Maritim, he could get me a family-rated hotel room in Frankfurt so that I could arrive the day before. At least, I had the Rail & Fly ticket to use for the 14th,so no extra costs there. Just a lot of stress. And one day less to enjoy my dog. Damnit. I had to liv with it though, so I arranged to leave on Sunday afternoon and got everything fixed in time. And a day later, the news hit me again "The Deutsche Bahn could avoid the strike". Hell, I really do hate the DB. Why are people like that? I decided to still leave early on Sunday just to avoid more stress. So, under tears, I said goodbye to Seb and Aluna and boarded the train to Frankfurt main station. No delays whatsoever... A bit luck for me there. And then I only had to wander with my huge backpack 16min to the Maritim hotel which is situated directly next to the Congress centre of Frankfurt. Finally, I could check in and took the elevator up to the 8th floor to my room. I just wanted to drink a hot tea to calm myself down... But hey - I got disappointed again. There was no hot water kettle in the room. Amazing...

  • Beneficial Culture

    26 Mart 2023, Almanya ⋅ 🌧 6 °C

Every weekend, I'm reading the ExtraTip, a free newspaper of Göttingen. Every other week or so, they give away tickets for something. Last week, they raffled off tickets for the charity art gala. Knowing nothing about it, I immediately filled out the form. And see there, the next day I got an email with a confirmation about me winning the tickets. I could pick them up at the box office.
As my mother couldn't go to this horrific musical with me, naturally, I asked her if she wanted to go with me. Unfortunately, she had to work. But no worries, I just asked my best friend. As I know her very well, Sina immediately said yes, and we've got ourselves a date.
I'm usually not a person that puts makeup on and dresses up, but tonight, I just had the urge to throw over my favourite dress and feel pretty. When Sina arrived, she stated that she felt a bit under-dressed. That's usually my feeling when I meet, with whatever friend, to whatever occasion. So I just enjoyed being nicely dressed at least once. Seb was kind enough to drive us to the Deutsches Theater, as it rained heavily. After a bit of confusion, we found our tickets and entered the premises. A lot of older, culturally looking people (what does that even mean?) were waiting for the show to begin, and I just hoped that it wouldn't get too boring. Honestly, it was a blast!
It was a great variety of music (oh dear Dirty Old Town), dancing (cr!sis was phenomenal), comedy (Comedy Company was hilarious!), and acrobatics. I felt highly entertained and culturally relieved. I actually think, I could do such things more often.

  • Second day at the ITB

    9 Mart 2023, Almanya ⋅ ☁️ 1 °C

Today was my last day in Berlin, and I figured that I could go to the ITB again. As I had to check out of my flat, I woke up early and made myself ready for the day. As I wasn't in a rush to get back to the masses of the fair, I figured that a 45 min ride with the Tram was just the thing I needed right now, so I sat back in the Ring-S42 and enjoyed the ride. My period pain was getting worse, so I wanted to take some painkillers again. Unfortunately, one of the 600 mg fell to the floor. I don't know too much about the hygiene in trams, but as it usually chauffeured drunken people and addicts, I rather not use it any more. Thankfully, I had a 400 mg as well. When I arrived at the fair, I left my luggage at the wardrobe again and began to stroll. Today, I had quite some knowledge about the ITB already, so I definitely wasn't in a rush to explore. I found myself in a Taiwanese tea ceremony, I got a Henna, I got my mom some beautiful painted phone case (already thinking about Mother's Day) and sat down for a while to listen to a talk about Diversity. The best thing I "achieved" today was that I could drive the Formula 1 car at the Qatar Airways section. I was horrible, honestly. Over 20 seconds behind the best driver... That are worlds in Formula 1. I guess, I will never become as talented as Charles Leclerc. Then I might not have a choice but to be only a fangirl of him. And that I totally was, because I left the ITB early and had to wait for 3 hours for my train. That time, I used very wisely, to watch a bunch of videos of Charles - or how I call him "Leclec". I had to laugh so hard sometimes that people stared at me. I didn't care. I just enjoyed my free time. A perfect ending to a stressful but yet somehow relaxing time in Berlin.

  • A day with a friend

    8 Mart 2023, Almanya ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

Today started very slow, as I had planned to meet my old school friend Gülshan whenever she would wake up. As I knew her well, that would be around lunchtime. So I made myself breakfast, had a nice shower and watched some videos whilst I waited for my painkillers to kick in. My period always had to hit hard when I was travelling. Finally, I received Gülshans message, that she was awake and we could meet up. Jumping on the next tube towards city centre, we met Unter den Linden, and it was as if there weren't years between this and our last meeting. She was still the same, and I was, too. It's just so cool to have a friend like that. We decided to go to a café to have a proper catchup, and she navigated - rather poorly, but charming as usual - around the city. Finally, we decided on Wayne's Café, a Swedish brand, looking very similar to Starbucks but way more ecologically friendly. I got a Chai Latte (one of the best I've ever got) and a Blueberry Muffin. We talked about our lives, jobs, boyfriends and travels which was just lovely. Then we decided to go to the Futurium, for which we had to go to the main station. There, we found ourselves next to brambibal's donuts, a vegan donut shop that an influencer named Mirellativegal (that we both watch) had a cooperation with. So we decided to actually get influenced and get ourselves some donuts and God were they delicious! I had a Rhaburb Crumble and it tasted so good... I wanted more! But we already arrived at the Futurium, a free entry museum that is all about the future, what we could use to live more sustainable (e.g. solar, wind, water, bacterial energy) and how we are changing the environment. It had so much information in such a variety of forms that we couldn't stuff more than half of them in our heads. So we decided to sit down and just let everything sink in. Ten minutes before closing time, we made our way to our locker to get our stuff and head out to dinner. Gülshan knew just the right place to go to - Hage Ramen. The logo looks a bit weird, but when you are inside, you get a nice Japanese atmosphere and great wall decor. I've never eaten Japanese food before, let alone with chopsticks. But I was determined to try. After asking Gülshan a bunch of questions, I ordered vegan Age Gyoza, some type of fried dumplings and Ramen Sesame. The Gyoza were extremely delicious and I could have just eaten that, although they were rather salty, so that my Grape Soda didn't last long. The Ramen Sesame was alright, and I actually ate only with the given chopsticks and spoon, but I found it a bit difficult to understand, why not to eat (or rather drink) the actual soup. And when there were only little pieces left, I thought it very frustrating to not being able to see the leftovers because there was so much leftover brown soup. I guess I just don't like throwing food away, but the Japanese don't usually drink it, as they say it would be unhealthy to do so. Completely stuffed, we got on the next tube and said goodbye to each other. It was really a pleasure meeting Gülshan after such a long time. She always makes me feel totally fine with myself and light-hearted. She is just a cool character, full-stop.Okumaya devam et

  • Busy ITB

    7 Mart 2023, Almanya ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

There I was, spending 3 days in Berlin, as I had decided to visit the biggest Tourism event of the world. It was actual holidays for me, as STA Travel wouldn't grant me these days as business travel. Anyway, I had booked my 3-day-ticket, train and Airbnb accommodation. I was ready.
I couldn't sleep at all that night and lay awake thinking about Aluna and why she wouldn't eat properly. Then I thought, I could use that time, I just googled the shit out of the topic and finally fell asleep. At 6am, my alarm clock went off, and I told Seb everything, he could possibly use regarding Alunas food for the next three days. As usual, I made myself a coffee to start the day and immediately soaked everything in coffee, as I pushed over my mug. Luckily, I still had my pyjamas on. After cleaning the mess, I made myself and my little luggage ready. Seb brought me to the train station and my stomach was churning again. I could never get used to the awful feeling, leaving my beloved hometown for travelling. As much as I love to travel, I really hate leaving, as short a time it might be for. Getting on the train, I felt way more comfortable and quite enjoyed the ride, doing some laptop work and listening to my favourite songs. At half past 10, I arrived and made my way to the ITB halls. I left my luggage at the wardrobe and started my first ever visit. Immediately, I went into the wrong direction and had to ask for the right ones. But then, I was on my way. And, oh boy, it is really huge. So many stands and people. Thousands in a blink of an eye. My inner introvert was screaming. But I had a mission - to get home with as much information and goodies as possible. So I started strolling around and after around 3 halls and 2 hours I was starving to death. Luckily, I had brought my own sandwich, so that I wouldn't have to spend a fortune on bad food. Although, I have to admit, the food that I saw looked incredibly delicious. I talked to quite a few people, mostly just because I wanted something from their stands (e.g. sweets, postcards or just a tourist map). I couldn't get as many goodies as at the TravelConneXtion in 2018, but still quite some cool ones. In the end, I got a bamboo cutlery set, a beautiful mousepad with lots of animals from Singapore's zoo, a tiny pet giraffe, some very nice jute bags and postcards, and the best thing - for me - was rather unexpected. I walked along the Maldives stands and wasn't paying too much attention, but a lovely, artsy postcard caught my eye, so I stopped for a second. This hesitation was directly used from the man behind the stand, who started talking to me about an honestly amazing new resort in the Maldives. Everything included, from all-day-long food, 20 min water sports, and art classes, to three excursions during your stay. And when he then gave me the most beautiful scarf with one of the post card motifs that I actually wanted to get, I decided that I would sell each and every customer wanting to travel to the Maldives, that hotel (Oaga Resort, if anybody is interested). I was quite happy with my goodies, but I picked up a lot of information material for the travel agency on the way, so my back and feet were killing me. They don't have lots of seating areas, other than where you can get food or talk real business with the stand-people. My way led me to the toilet, where I "chilled out" for quite some time, until the constant flushing was getting on my nerves, and I threw myself back into the masses. When I was feeling already sore to the bones, I finally decided, to cut the day short and find my way back. That was way easier said than done, and I needed at least another 30 mins to find the wardrobe where I stored my luggage. - at the other end of the fair. On my way there, I stumbled upon what looked a bit like a dream to me: A Formula 1 car. In Qatar Airways style. With the Pirelli tires and everything. As a huge F1 fan (currently fangirling on Charles Leclerc), my pain was forgotten, and I dived into the awe. For about three seconds, though, as suddenly a huge mass of people closed in on me and (MY) car, just because they wanted to photograph some stupid footballer (didn't even know his face), in front of the F1 car. That's not his place to be photographed in, anyway! So, I decided to fucking leave this shit, and got my luggage. When I managed the three trams, I had to find my flat. After asking a nice, helpful woman on the street, I saw the mistake. The ad on Airbnb said 228, but it actually was 218. Getting the key and me up the two staircases, I finally arrived in my little accommodation. It looked rather old, but charming and the bathroom was surprisingly modern, so I could settle down easily. Throwing away my bags, shoes and pants, I could finally breathe again. I was so tired. But I had to get myself some dinner, as everything would be closed tomorrow - Women's day is a holiday in Berlin. So, I gathered my last bits of energy to get to the nearby Aldi and find - to my delight - Tiramisu. That alone didn't make dinner, so I got myself some pretzels and Aioli as well. After eating myself even more tired, I wanted to get myself ready for bed. Shit, I forgot my toothpaste. How late was it? Quarter to 9. Alright, leaving my pyjamas on - I already put them on - I walked straight to Aldi again. I was going to meet a dear friend of mine tomorrow, I couldn't do that with breath of Aioli and stress from travelling. Luckily, they had my favourite toothpaste (in the big bottle), so my night was safe.

  • Last day of horror

    17 Şubat 2023, Almanya ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

The last day started just right: "Well, Matty has left because he's got Covid." Amazing news. When I told Seb, he said "Well it least you could take one thing from the training"...
The next news came immediately: "Last night, a man was killed in our office's street." Yet another awesome thing to know. Where was this stupid film crew that shot the new season of CSI:Miami? And could they please change the settings location now?
Honestly, I really couldn't wait to get rid of this awful city.
Thankfully, my wish came true after another couple of hours in which we met the CEOs of our tour operator and finalised the training.
I actually quite enjoyed being in this team of New Hires although we were all so different. But somehow we worked very well as a team and got on nicely. It was sad to say Goodbye to them (just for a couple of days, as we'd meet each other online the next week) but also relieving to finally leave this city. But as we don't have Dunkin Donuts in Göttingen, I first had to get myself (and Seb) some donuts. Tbh I don't really like donuts that much but somehow I really craved these. So I got myself a six-pack of them and got on a completely packed train. Today, above all, Ver.di had to perform a strike so that half of the trains wouldn't work. Therefore, the still driving trains were crammed. Luckily, a colleague of mine had a reserved seat and because of Aluna I could sit next to her. The reason for that was, because actually the seat beside her was taken. But the family with the sweetest boy I've recently met said, they were happy with their two others seats when James, the lil boy, were only allowed to pet Aluna. As she was over her short frightened shaking at the train tracks, I just smiled and allowed it. As much as James squeaked in joy about the dog, he didn't touch her at all. So that was a win-win.
Exchanging lots of information during our pleasant chat, my colleague and I were quite befuddled when the train driver announced Göttingen to be the next stop. I hastily packed all my things and Aluna together, took her on my arm and left the train. I was shocked by the cleanliness of the streets and people all around me. Finally, I was home.
Seb picked me up at the taxi stop and the happiness of Aluna could be measured by the whirling of her tail. It's always so cute when she greets you after some time. It's a delicious sense of unconditional love you get from her. I thought I'd be the one surprising Seb with the donuts, but he surprised me with a kebab as well. We both agreed, that we loved each other on the spot.

  • Winning dessert

    16 Şubat 2023, Almanya

Today the training for me consisted in working on my own customer requests as my colleagues learned the systems. I also wrote down a step-by-step list for using Amadeus from scratch that I showed my boss. He asked me whether I used the system or if I did it just using my memory. Obviously, I just recalled it. He stated that my brain was a fascinating thing and how cool it was that I know so much after only one month. I agreed modestly.
In the meantime, Aluna re-decorated the office and played garbage woman, pulling out all the different bakery bags and trying to eat the leftovers. Of course, I had to clean after her when her game was over and nothing left to eat.
In the evening we played a Kahoot quiz about Midoco (our mid/back office system). Although I only listened with half an ear, I won the quiz and therefore a dessert at the Italian place we would go to after work. I was very pleased with myself.
Entering the restaurant, two of my colleagues told some interesting stories: "When walking down the street to the hotel, I was followed by a man with open trousers shouting names after me." She was wearing a long bright coat, makeup and a high ponytail. Thabk goodness she arrived at the hotel lobby safely. If she wouldn't have been so tough, she might have got a trauma from this already. What the f... The other blonde stated "Well, I've just seen two drug deals happening infront of me. The third one came and offered me some pills at broad daylight." The answer to this, for me, inexplicable behaviour, is that everyone knows they're drug dealers, so why hide? Also, the best hiding places are usually just in plain sight.
Nevertheless, we had a very lovely time, eating Pizza and Pasta, sharing a bunch of stories about people from work, our likings and what we've experienced so far in the Tourism industry. It's a funny place to work in, definitely. I'm glad I found it for myself. After my Margarita, I ordered a Tartufo. The waiter asked whether I'd need a candle for it, as he heard us talking about me being the "special guest" today. I didn't need one, but Annika then asked for him to sing a song. He kindly refused and we had a good laugh about it.
After quite a few drinks we finally payed and walked over the street back into our hotel.

  • Foggy Truth

    15 Şubat 2023, Almanya ⋅ ⛅ 6 °C

Today we learned the reason why there was this Armageddon state yesterday.
In short: There first was a fire in the mainstation. Therefore a tube got stuck in a tunnel. After they got the tube out of there, they had everything clear. Half an hour later they found a dead body on the tracks. It was an homeless man who could have been killed, suicidal or in an accident. No one knows. But it wasn't because of the fire.
So next time a customer says they think a destination is too dangerous to go to, I'll just tell them this story and conclude "If you want danger, you can take the next train to Frankfurt. Everywhere else, you'll be safer."
We had an early finish today, so I decided to go and find a bit of grass for Aluna again. I was lucky. In 10min walking distance was a small little bit of no-asphalt, so we made our way there. I took some photos of Aluna on the way, so it took us about 20min to get there. Arriving, she immediately ate something from the grass and I nearly panicked. Who am I to know whether this shitty city has poison laying around in the park. But when I saw a little bunny hopping through the grass, I was 100% safe - it was just the bunny poo she'd eaten. Anyhow, she did smell and tasted the rabbit (poo) but did not see it literally being 5m away from her. Aluna wouldn't become a hunter this lifetime anymore.
My training group had suggested to meet each other at 7.30pm at the hotels' lobby to get something to eat and so I went back to the hotel. One of my colleagues, Janin, has already gotten herself some pizza and offered to look after Aluna so that I could go eat in piece. I thought it would be a good idea. Once for me, to finally not having to think about someone kicking my dog in the full (and drunken) streets of Frankfurt. And second for Aluna to not be stressed by this environment. So I brought Aluna to Janins room and left her there. I instantly felt this hollow freedom. As if a mother would give her newborn child away for the first time. It's always the same feeling for me. I really don't like being separated from her tbh... But I knew that I could trust Janin and she could care for Aluna and that it would be good. So I decided to enjoy my time with my colleagues and dinner. After about 1,5hrs we were back and I picked up Aluna. As I've actually thought it would be, Aluna was not satisfied with the situation and didn't like me being gone. So her happiness about me coming back was heartwarming as ever. Just because of these little moments of unconditional love that are literally thrown at me, I have to leave her once in a while and come back to find myself embraced with love.

  • Armageddon

    14 Şubat 2023, Almanya ⋅ 🌙 5 °C

The night was as calm as in a big city could be. Aluna finally gave me some space in the bed, too, so I woke up feeling pretty well rested.
I ate my orange and kiwi that I brought with me, fed Aluna and started to watch "Stutz", a pretty good movie on Netflix so far.
The day consisted of training, training, training.
At lunch time we were visited by the
Founder of AER and Cockpit. Honestly, I've never felt more uncomfortable with a person being in a room. The atmosphere changed completely during the time he was in the room. When he spoke, he stared at the floor the whole time and still had the aura of a dictator. And when he said "The system is so easy, my cleaner could use it", I knew I wouldn't get to like him anymore. Just because someone is a cleaner doesn't mean that they aren't smart. Remember this, shitty rich people!
In the afternoon, something stopped us from continuing. A huge amount of police and firefighter cars were howling and screeching infront of our office balcony. Everyone raced to see what was happening. We couldn't really make out what actually was the matter with this drama. So we returned to our seats to let our brains be fried even more.
When the training day was finally over, we were going to an Indian restaurant. The second I got into it, my head exploded with pain. The music that was played inside plus the voices of the people were so loud and making me really feel uncomfortable. The monotonous rhythm of the beat makes some people forget or overhear it after a while. I'm not one of them. For me, 2hours of the same music was torture. So when I was asked whether I'd like to go with the others to the bar, I declined. I felt so sick, my head feeling light whenever I looked down. When having a small dog that you have to look after, that is a big No-no to have. So I excused myself and just fell to bed instead. After a short call with Seb, I immediately fell asleep.

  • Nervous af

    13 Şubat 2023, Almanya ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

As a new member of STA Travel, I have to join the New Hire training in Frankfurt for a week. I don't really think that much time is necessary, however, I don't have a choice. Therefore, I had to go. First, I wanted my dog Aluna, who can't stay alone, to be looked after either my best friend Sina or my Mum. But when my Mum stated she would be working and Sina told me about her cruise that would take place exactly that week, I had to think again. As Seb can't take her with him to work and he can't do Homeoffice either, the only option was to take her with me. So I asked Annika, my colleague who is responsible for the whole training, and she reluctantly said Yes. I called the Hotel I'd be staying in, asking if Aluna was good to stay. Sure, for 15€ per night. Awesome... So I had to pay 75€ to be stressed even more from this training. But, I could take her with me.
Packing my luggage for the week, I figured that Aluna would need not only her food but also some place to rest. So I took apart her Tipi and put it into my luggage. That took up about 50% of the space. Then I also packed a towel, her food, her hair brush, her snacks and her backpack. All in all she took 85% of my luggage. I figured that the only things I would actually need for myself, were some PJs, underwear, another sweater to change, and my bathroom items. Everything else, I'd have on my body travelling or put in my own backpack (e.g. laptop, charger, book to read, my own food). Everything packed, I was ready to go.
The next morning I woke up completely destroyed. I was worrying the whole night, nervous as shit, if everything would be going to be alright. Aluna was afraid of trains since she kinda "lost" me when I took off to Frankfurt to fly to England in November. Ever since, she was shivering whenever she heard a train. Today however, she would have to go through the fear with me. I was still nervous and she senses that kinda stuff pretty easy, so of course she was quite excited as well. Seb dropped me off at the train station and it was, figuring that we would just be gone for a week... In Germany, 2hr drive away from home, pretty tearful.
We were early and so we stood at the track, watching ICEs come and go. Aluna shivered from time to time but I guess she was relieved whenever I was still with her after yet another train. When our train finally arrived, I entered the waggon, Aluna in her backpack on my front, my backpack on my back, my luggage in my right hand side, and luckily caught a seat right next to the luggage station, where I could leave my luggage and still have it in sight. The first few minutes were pretty interesting, as Aluna was very excited and jumped from her seat, to my lap, to her seat again. She wanted to get to the floor and explore the waggon, but I couldn't let her do this. In the end, she accepted my No and lay down on my jacket on her seat.
For the tube, I sat her in her backpack again, and I actually think, that was more stressful than the train, as the constant opening and closing of the doors was quite loud and freaked her out.
Finally, we arrived at the main station and were greeted by drunks, drug addicts and homeless people. Honestly, our office is directly opposite the main station and like 6 feet to the left, there were about 10–15 men, sitting in broad daylight, giving themselves shots of Cocaine. Around them, hundreds of broken beer bottles. And I had to let Aluna walk in this shit. It was disgusting.
Inside the building, the interior immediately spoke Money and Safety Cameras, so that was a real culture clash right there and then.
My colleagues were all very friendly and nice, and we had quite a good day together. Everyone was so amazed by Aluna and how she is just so quiet and cute and frugal and just wholesome in general. It must have been the millionth of times - I really adored this dog for her awesome behaviour. Not that I thought she'd behave any different. But anyway. After a long 7 hours, we were done for the day, and so we could finally check in to the hotel. This time, Christian told me, that booked the Bristol Hotel, a much nicer hotel than last time. However, I think I am just used to better standards. My room is tiny, honestly. It can't be more than 2 metres in width. I don't know where to put my luggage without falling over it... But I finally found a use for it - being Alunas basket.
I didn't give myself a lot of time to calm down, as I wanted to go to the Main river with Aluna for her first real walk today. The river was 15 min away from the hotel, and I had to go through the main station again. I am not a fan of the traffic in Frankfurt. It's so chaotic and confusing at times, you just don't know where to go to. Or at least I don't. When I arrived at the river, I thought to myself for a split-second, that Frankfurt wasn't all that bad. Then a guy greeted me from the dark shadows of the park, looking as if he'd be ready to kill me on the spot, and I decided to leave the "Bad" stamp on Frankfurt.
This, plus that I nearly stumbled walking on the bridge as I have eaten so little during the day, I decided to cut the walk short and get back to my tiny hotel room. After arriving there, I showered Alunas feet - I didn't want her to go on my bed with this city yuck on her feet - and put her on my bed. Now she sleeps in it and I don't know where I would be able to sleep...
