Wild Atlantic Way

Our version of the Wild Atlantic Way in our beloved camper with the dog! Baca selengkapnya
  • Blasket centre viewing platform

    7 Agustus 2024, Irlandia ⋅ 🌬 15 °C

In Dunquin, the most westerly parish on the Dingle Peninsula, is a unique heritage centre and museum. The Blasket Centre tells the story of the Blasket Islands and the tiny Irish speaking community who lived there until the mid-20th century. The Centre is also a stunning piece of architecture in itself.

The Centre is a Wild Atlantic Way Signature Discovery Point and incorporates a fully accessible clifftop viewing platform that offers dramatic views of the Blasket archipelago and the Atlantic coastline. What is really cool is that the platform is the shape of the WAW sign!

Life on the Blaskets was difficult. People survived by fishing and farming and every day involved a struggle against the elements. Emigration and decline led to the final evacuation of the Great Blasket in 1953.

The Great Blasket population left a massive cultural footprint. The island authors documented the life of their community in a series of books that are invaluable social records and classics of Irish literature. They are both a window into the past and a fascinating resource for today.

  • GAA

    7 Agustus 2024, Irlandia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

As we headed back to our campsite, Dingle was alive with green and yellow!

We're not sure what was going on, but it appeared to be related to the GAA, so could have been football or hurling 🤷🏻‍♀️

It was just nice to see whole families out celebrating.

  • Tonight's campsite

    7 Agustus 2024, Irlandia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

We decided to book Inch Beach campsite based on a recommendation.

It's a funny little campsite. Very little here and looks a bit more like a car park than a campsite. It has amenities though and a food truck which is open early til late.

The owner greeted us happily and was as chilled and friendly as we've come across so far! He couldn't have been more laid back, which was nice because we were shattered when we arrived.

  • Morning view... Changeable weather!

    8 Agustus 2024, Irlandia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

This is the view this morning from the camper window. They were taken an hour apart and with the first one being me attempting to get a sunrise picture! In reality the fog came in in the space of ten minutes!

This has been the theme of the last few days, and looks to continue. It's not even that it always rains here, that's not true. It's that you never know what it is going to do, and when it does, it's extreme! 🤣

The views have again, been spectacular! People raved about Inch strand being the best beach in Ireland, and it is really nice, but we have definitely been on some nicer ones here. Maybe they're just less known?

  • Planning...

    8 Agustus 2024, Irlandia ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Yesterday our aim was to drive from Glenbeigh where we camped last night and follow the WAW route to cover the Dingle peninsula.

The trouble is that apparently I am a collector! 🤣 I see collecting the WAW waypoints as a bit of a challenge and suffer with quite severe FOMO!! 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

They found it funny to begin with, but I think it's wearing thin and Andy had the "we need to be more ruthless with where we stop, otherwise we're not going to make it round" chat with me 😳

So, we decided that as we'd spent longer in Dingle Yesterday than we thought, and stopped MANY more times than we planned we wouldn't have time to do Connor Pass yesterday as originally planned. Especially as I'd discovered there is a waterfall along the way (which I OBVIOUSLY want to stop for!).

So we'll be doing that this morning and following the WAW route from there and continuing on. I'm very excited about the pass... I hope the weather clears a bit there. It'll be reminiscent of Applecross pass in Scotland when we did the NC500... basically driving in the clouds the whole way and seeing nothing! 🤣

The plan from here today is to end up in Kilrush... What we do on the way and what we see, well who knows! 🤷🏻‍♀️😍

  • AN CHONAIR discovery point

    8 Agustus 2024, Irlandia ⋅ 🌫 17 °C

Probably the worst weather so far! 🌧️🌫️

The Conor Pass or Connor Pass (Irish: An Chonair, 'the way or path') is one of the highest mountain passes in Ireland served by an asphalted road. It is on the R560 road on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry.

The 456-metre (1,496 ft)-high pass on the Dingle Peninsula links Dingle, in the southwest, with Brandon Bay and Castlegregory in the northeast. The scenic road leading to the pass weaves its way around the sharp cliff faces and past high corrie lakes. At its highest point, it passes between the mountain peaks of Binn Dubh ('Beenduff') and Sliabh Mhacha Ré ('Slievanea').

Apparently, the views from the road are breathtaking, with a glaciated landscape of mountains, corrie lakes and a broad sweeping valley spread out below. Not that we saw any of this... the cloud or fog and biblical rain saw to that!

  • The selected night spot!

    8 Agustus 2024, Irlandia ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

...and what a spot it is!! It's a little car park down a long track which is looking out at the Atlantic and has rocks for Oscar to climb on and a beach which looks to go about half a mile with lovely sand.

There were a few cars parked up when we arrived so after a coffee and cake, we got the kite out and headed down to the beach for a play 😊

    Perfect.

  • Lets go fly a kite!! 🪁

    8 Agustus 2024, Irlandia ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

...up to the highest heights... 🌬️🪁

Omgosh, we had the best time. The beach is lovely, the sun settled and looked beautiful over the rocks and Oscar flew a kite for the first time (and was awarded pilot of the night too! 🤣) and was delighted with how well he flew it.

We played with the kite and wandered around taking pictures for just over an hour as it got dark and when we got back to the van, the car park was empty!

Our favourite stopover so far, by a million miles! ❤️
