Signal Island Snorkeling
8. oktober, Ny Kaledonien ⋅ ☁️ 73 °F
We got on our cute little boat to take us to Signal Island. Erik and I sat on these seats that reminded me of riding a bull. The waves were big enough to get us wet on the way out. Not too wet but wet enough.
The island itself was quite pretty. White sand beach with so much coral and seashell everywhere. White white white coral and seashell. A lot of bleaching for sure. Zero zooxanthellaes on those dead coral.
We went snorkeling and of course those photos and videos are on my underwater camera. The water was a bit chillier than we expected. I got used to it pretty quickly. Erik did not. He was so cold that after an hour in the water he had to get out.
For that first hour though, we swan with turtles, and saw so many fish and the most beautiful coral I've ever seen. Erik said he saw some purple starfish. I didn't see any of those. He did find this really cool seashell.
Once we got out after that first hour, we walked around the island a bit so that Erik could warm up a little. He's been sick so that's why I think he was being such a bum about being in the water. Once we walked around and checked out some signage, I got back in the water by myself.
I swam to where Erik and I were before we headed back to the shore the first hour. I saw this magical school of fish. So many fish. So many. I thought I was taking video and photo but then I noticed that it said my SD card was full. Urgh! I really wanted a photo of the school of fish AND THEN I saw a black tip reef shark. Whyyyy is my SD card full?? 😭 I figured I'll just live in the moment and take it all in. I didn't want to hold my camera anymore and it was kind of freaky being out there in the water with no one else around me. If my camera wasn't going to work I was going to give it to Erik. I headed back to shore and on the way I saw this really pink sea slug. I also had a turtle almost run right into me. Epic.
After I handed my camera off, Erik wanted to come back in. We decided to go back to the same spot since it was a little further out than the other snorkelers were. We saw the school of fish again, but no shark this time. We only had 10 minutes to be out there before we needed to head back in and head back to the port. We saw some fun anemone that looked like spaghetti. Oh and the coral heads out there were huge. Not huge like a bowling ball but huge like a gigantic boulder. I have photos and maybe videos of them on the other camera.
We forgot to bring snacks and water so that was shameful on our part.
The ride on the boat on the way back was quite an experience. The waves were very high and choppy and water was spraying everywhere as we slammed down from the waves. It was fun though.Læs mere
