  • River of Life, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

    12 februari 2024, Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

The river of life was a beautiful section of the river to visit either day or night. There was a large mosque at the area the two rivers met, and opposite another stunning building which backed onto Merdeka Square.

The area had walkways, seating and street art to enjoy, but the real show came in the evening when mist was dispersed to give the whole area an ethereal feel, especially coupled with the blue lighting and prayers that could be heard emanating from the mosque. There was a light show with the water feature after 9pm too, which was fun to watch.

As this area was close to our hotel we ended up wandering by most nights to soak up the atmosphere.

  • Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

    12–17 feb. 2024, Malaysia ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

We really enjoyed staying in a different area of the city than the previous time, it allowed us to explore more of this area on foot and we thoroughly enjoyed it!

Close to some of the big attractions with KL but still not over run with tourists, we were able to walk along the river, go to the central market, eat and shop in Chinatown, and still be really close to the LRT for travel further afield.Läs mer

  • Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

    13 februari 2024, Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Although we spotted the two towers from all across the city we still weren't prepared for seeing them up close - they were huge!

Lit up in the evening they looked almost CGI against the skyline. There was a shopping centre behind that we wandered through to get to the park and lake so we could watch the light show.

We visited during the day on our final day in KL and it was much more peaceful, so we enjoyed a break sat outside the towers, and then in front of the lake.

  • Perdana Botanical Garden, Kuala Lumpur

    14 februari 2024, Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

A lovely Botanical garden to wander around, we enjoyed a couple of breakfasts sat watching the wildlife here.

The first time we visited we believe we saw a pet cat that the owner was searching the park for, it was busy trying to hunt squirrels that were jumping around the trees above.

The second time we briefly caught view of a kingfisher with its bright blue feathers around the wetlands.

There was a couple of play areas for children as well, including a Dinosaur park!

  • Butterfly park, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

    14 februari 2024, Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

Absolutely loved seeing all of the butterflies, we wandered around the enclosure for about an hour spotting the different types. Weirdly, there were also tortoises and chickens to see.

In the educational rooms as we left there was other things to view, like frogs, toads, praying mantis, beetles, millipedes so we enjoyed trying to find the camouflaged creatures.

Along the walls were more insects, displayed to show the variety of insects from all around the world. Plenty that I wouldn't want to meet alive and in the wild!

  • Dharma Realm Buddhist Temple,KualaLumpur

    16 februari 2024, Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 31 °C

Lovely monastery we visited, mostly due to the fact there was a restaurant attached, but the actual temple was impressive to see as well.

Almost all locals visiting for prayers, and the restaurant got very busy. Some lovely locals helped us to find the restaurant and get the food! Buffet style with all vegetarian dishes we enjoyed potatoes glazed with soy sauce and sesame seeds, spring rolls, tofu in tomato sauce, fried rice, chai sui "pork", fried "chicken" wing and nutmeg tea. Delicious feast, costing around £6 total.

There was free food as well, which looked just as delicious, but we were happy to see this being given to homeless.

  • Sandakan, Borneo Malaysia

    17–19 feb. 2024, Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Quick stop by Sandakan as a pick up point for our kinabatangan river tour. We took the opportunity to go to an orangutan rehabilitation centre too, and then enjoyed the town.

Lovely night market, which was mostly frequented by locals, and view across the sea too. We got quite a few odd looks around the town, although we didn't spot many westerners ourselves!Läs mer

  • Orangutan Rehabilitation, Sepilok,Borneo

    18 februari 2024, Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 29 °C

A fantastic trip to see orangutans being rehabilitated, we were able to see them at the feeding area and open area nursery but not while wandering around. Hopefully we will have more luck while on the river cruise and walks which we will be doing tomorrow!

We took a bus to get to the sanctuary, the driver was so happy for us to be on there that he took a selfie with us! We got some double takes from locals too. Unfortunately it dropped us off half an hours walk away so we only just made feeding time though.

We stayed until almost closing time at lunch, and got to watch the orangutans as the park quietened as they played and snacked together.

It was also a struggle to get back to town afterwards, as we thought there was a bus which didn't turn up - thankfully we met another couple and shared a grab back.

  • Kinabatangan River,Sakau,Borneo,Malaysia

    19–21 feb. 2024, Malaysia ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

A absolutely fantastic couple of days spent doing river cruises up and down Kinabatangan River spotting as much wildlife as possible.

We were so lucky to be able to see all the Big Borneo 5; orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, crocodiles, and rhinoceros hornbills.

No photos of the pygmy elephants unfortunately as it was a misty morning and I was too concerned with actually seeing them!

We were also surprised by the amount of kingfishers in the area, as well as an array of other birds I've never even heard of.

We got to do sunrise, sunset, and evening cruises to see as much as possible, and it was amazing to see the river at the different times.

  • Kota Kinabalu, Borneo, Malaysia

    21–25 feb. 2024, Malaysia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

We took a few days to relax and enjoy a quieter city after a couple of full on days in the jungle. There was some fantastic sunsets along the waterfront to enjoy!

We got to witness a couple more surprise (to us) dragon dances, and mostly ate at a vegetarian restaurant that served delicious laksa and char sui fried rice- yummy!Läs mer

  • Floating Mosque, Kota Kinabalu, Borneo

    24 februari 2024, Malaysia ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

A large mosque which is meant to be 'floating' - unfortunately you can only get a real sense of this by paying to get through the outer barrier - which we weren't prepared to do! It was also a further cost to get inside as well, when we hadn't found any other mosques that you had to pay for entrance.

It was still impressive though, and prayers were just started as we walked away towards the sunset.
