🌜Stealth Camping on Trail

Today started uniquely with a boat ride! The bridge in Erwin was washed out by floods during Hurricane Helene but thankfully a local rafting service is running a ferry service across the river for hikers.

I spent the day again hiking with Trickshot and Little Foot and we covered a lot of ground… approximately 21 miles. There were ambitious plans to make it to the next camping area but we ran out of daylight and decided to pitch tents in an area that is heavily hurricane damaged with down trees. We are on an old logging road that used to be part of the trail (there is currently a detour set up for 2025 hikers). Tomorrow we should be able to pop back into the main route early-no harm no foul.

We saw many different types of environments today- riverbank, dry/scrub, grassy patches, dense pine forests, blow-down forests, rocky areas,… probably more I’m forgetting. I spotted a bright orange salamander and identified an odd bird call as maybe a grouse (you should pull that one up-it’s a deep, low frequency knocking sound that even causes the ground to shake a little bit).
