    10 februari 2024, Bass Strait ⋅ 🌬 63 °F

We took a tour of the Bridge. Stacy is not only the Director, she is the Captain! She was surprised to learn there is no longer a ‘wheel’ of which to steer. Turns out, now-a-days, the wheel is strictly backup and much smaller (It is in the wooden box of the center console). It brought back memories of Stacy’s Navy days and having to take turns ‘at the wheel’.Meer informatie

Horn Island and the key role it played in World War II.

Twenty plus years ago, a young woman, Venessa Seekee, began to gather artifacts found on the island. She pieced together information about the war effort and collected individual veteran’s accounts over the years. The result is a small but mighty, emotional and inspiring museum which tells the remarkable story of Horn Island during WWII. It is still run by her and her husband, Liberty. Additionally, Vanessa fought for these Veterans to receive pensions and has organized several reunions over the years. Sadly, all have passed away now.

A little of the story here:
    The Forgotten Isle… Till Now

Horn Island, March 1942, the Japanese begin their first aerial onslaught upon the tiny island, located to the north west of the tip of Cape York. It had not taken the Japanese very long to discover the enormous strategic importance that this island held. If they could control this launching base for their own aircraft, then they could attack locations as far down as Melbourne. However, if the allies retain the base, they could launch attack against Japanese held targets in Papua New Guinea.

Not many remember, or even know about, the tiny island until now… The men who served here were known as the “forgotten army“, which is true even today. Men who served here after June 1943 have never received a service pension, and, although Vanessa worked hard to ensure that this was rectified through providing research materials, as evidence, they have never received any service pension. What is more important to the veterans now is that people come to see what they did, and where, and at the sites that were once home to them are conserved.

  • Bali, Indonesia

    2 maart 2024, Indonesië ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

Monuments, Temples, friends, mopeds, and monkeys! We visited Taman Ayun and Tanah Lot Temples. We stopped by artists carving wood and making jewelry. We toured an orchid farm and spent an afternoon with an old friend who now lives in Bali. During our visit, David and Adi took us around on scooters and served a delicious local lunch. It was definitely a highlight of our trip. Finally, I went to a 12 step meeting which was truly wonderful.

Taman Ayun Temple - Pura Taman Ayun is a compound of Balinese temple and garden with water features located in Mengwi subdistrict in Badung Regency, Bali, Indonesia. The temple garden was featured on the television program Around the World in 80 Gardens. In 2012, the Subak cultural landscape of Bali including Pura Taman Ayun was inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Tanah Lot Temple - Tanah Lot means "Land [in the] Sea" in the Balinese language. The temple sits on a large offshore rock which has been shaped continuously over the years by the ocean tide. The main deity of the temple is Dewa Baruna or Bhatara Segara, who is the sea god or sea power. The temple is one of seven sea temples around the Balinese coast. Each of the sea temples was established within eyesight of the next to form a chain along the south-western coast. In addition to Balinese mythology, the temple was significantly influenced by Hinduism.

UBud Monkey Forest - Home to almost 1,000 monkeys! This is a 12 hectare (30 acre) jungle area surrounding an old 14th century Hindu temple, located in the heart of Ubud. The local monkey species is called the Balinese long-tailed macaque, or crab-eating macaque. The scientific name is Macaca fascicularis.

  • Java, Indonesia

    5 maart 2024, Indonesië ⋅ ☁️ 82 °F

What an experience this was! We had a three hour bus ride escorted by local police which made the long drive as smooth as one could hope. Stacy bought a hat from a local who couldn’t contain her delight.

Borobudur is the largest Buddhist temple in the world, and ranks with Bagan in Myanmar and Angkor Wat in Cambodia as one of the great archeological sites of Southeast Asia. Borobudur remains popular for pilgrimage, with Buddhists in Indonesia celebrating Vesak Day at the monument. Among Indonesia's tourist attractions, Borobudur is the most-visited monument.

Borobudur Temple - Constructed of gray andesite-like stone, the temple consists of nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, topped by a central dome. It is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and originally 504 Buddha statues. The central dome is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues, each seated inside a perforated stupa. The monument guides pilgrims through an extensive system of stairways and corridors with 1,460 narrative relief panels on the walls and the balustrades. Borobudur has one of the world's most extensive collections of Buddhist reliefs.

Built during the reign of the Sailendra Dynasty, the temple design follows Javanese Buddhist architecture, which blends the Indonesian indigenous tradition of ancestor worship and the Buddhist concept of attaining nirvāṇa. The monument is a shrine to the Buddha and a place for Buddhist pilgrimage. Evidence suggests that Borobudur was constructed in the 8th century and subsequently abandoned following the 14th-century decline of Hindu kingdoms in Java and the Javanese conversion to Islam. Worldwide knowledge of its existence was sparked in 1814 by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, then the British ruler of Java, who was advised of its location by native Indonesians. Borobudur has since been preserved through several restorations. The largest restoration project was completed at 1983 by the Indonesian government and UNESCO, followed by the monument's listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

  • Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam

    8 maart 2024, Vietnam ⋅ ☀️ 93 °F

We went on a night tour of Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) city and took in a water puppet show before experiencing excellent, local food for dinner. Afterward, while walking downtown, we stumbled across a festival and various individuals getting ready to go on stage for a fashion show. We were behind the scenes as several models walked by. So cool!

Note: Water puppetry arose in the Red River delta and other rice-growing regions of northern Việt Nam a thousand years ago, during the Lý dynasty. Villagers staged water puppet performances to celebrate the end of the rice harvest, at religious festivals, and simply for entertainment.
