On 8 April 2024 we set off for a two week trip to Kangaroo Island while the weather forecast was looking favourable.

Kangaroo Island sits off the coast of South Australia and is Australia's third-largest Island. At 155 kilometres long and up to 55 kilometres wide, it covers an area of 4,416 square kilometres. The population is approximately 4,500.

In December 2019 through to February 2020 bushfires ripped through almost half of the island, decimating infrastructure, wildlife and terrain.

We will be interested to see how the island has recovered from these fires.

Kangaroo Island has 1,600kms of roads, the majority of the main roads are sealed, principally those linking Penneshaw, American River, Kingscote, Parndana and Flinders Chase National Park. However, most of the island’s roads are not sealed, and many are very corrugated.Baca lagi

After buying the important breakfast ingredient that I’d forgotten to pack (peanut butter!) we found a cafe for lunch. A lot of empty shops along the main street but the one cafe we found was quite busy.Baca lagi

Willows camping site is our home for tonight, a couple of kms off the main highway just east of Balranald. Had the place to ourselves - very peaceful and we were able to have a fire.

After a quick visit to Deep Creek Retreat with Ian and Sandra who were getting the house ready for incoming guests we drove down to Cape Jervis. We stayed at the only campground there so as to be ready to catch the 9am ferry to KI.Baca lagi

Sealink Ferry

Up early to get ready for the ferry to KI, drove down to the port to line up to board the Sealion 2000 for the 45 minute trip.

Spent most of the trip on deck staring at the horizon to avoid getting seasick - relatively calm seas but cold and windy.Baca lagi

PengembaraYeah, glad it wasn’t me! Only the large vehicles had to reverse on - didn’t get it. Then of course they pushed a car into ours, minor scratches, which of course Charlie wasn’t happy about!

Arrived on KI - first stop the Fat Beagle for breakfast!

From here we set off to explore the eastern section of the island before heading off to Kingscote where we have 2 nights booked at the caravan park.Baca lagi

This looks like a great place to camp - when the weather is nice. We may come back here at the end of our trip, weather permitting.

Located on the north coast of Dudley Peninsula and overlooking Backstairs Passage. Antechamber Bay beach is a 4.2 km long, northeast facing beach. It is around 30 minutes on a sealed and unsealed road, and into Lashmar Conservation Park.Baca lagi

Lashmar Conservation Park

Apparently a favourite for beach lovers, Lashmar Conservation Park adjoins the long sandy beach at Antechamber Bay. The park is an ideal location for swimming, fishing and bird watching and is just a short drive from Cape Willoughby lightstation.Baca lagi

Cape Willoughby Lighthouse

Situated in the easternmost point of Kangaroo Island, Cape Willoughby Lighthouse was the first lighthouse to be built in South Australia in 1852. It stands 27 metres high with 102 steps to the lookout tower, which was included in a guided tour, (no tour available when we visited. We did the self guided tour ($5.80 pp) which included the fascinating museum that detailed the 50+ shipwrecks on the island’s coastline.Baca lagi

The largest town on Kangaroo Island, Kingscote sits on Nepean Bay and is home to the island’s airport, making it a popular base for tourists.

We have 2 nights booked at Kingscote Tourist Park which is a small but well equipped park. After an early dinner of chicken casserole and rice, we walked down to the beach and along the town walkway for a couple of kilometres.Baca lagi

Seal Bay

We did the self-guided tour of the Seal Bay Conservation Park - this was along a zig zagging raised boardwalk above the seals’ breeding ground and overlooking the beach. Great views of the seals in their natural habitat.

The Australian Sea-lion is one of the rarest seals in the world, decimated by hunting in the 19th century as part of the thriving fur trade. Seal Bay Conservation Park is home to the third largest breeding colony of this species in the world, accounting for around five percent of the world’s total.

The sun poked its head out for a short time - yay!

Its long, sandy beach is popular for sunbathing, fishing and surfing. This beach is also famed for its cray fishing and numerous boats leave and arrive at the town’s jetty with a fresh catch.Baca lagi
