    Just in Belgium

    June 4, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

Having delayed departure Switzerland seemed a step too far for this trip. Also Swiss weather not the best at the moment. So got to Calais and turned left stopping just over the Belgian border with sun and wind just like home. No plans other than to go where its sunny.Read more

  • Veurne

    June 5, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ 🌬 14 °C

The main news here we can't take a photo of.......the wind...... Anyway we did manage 25 miles on the bike, David is shattered ; he forgot to charge his battery properly. He also had a problem with his tyre ( see photo). I had a fab day 😀Read more

  • Ghent (or Gent as they write it)

    June 6, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

Spent the day exploring this picturesque city on foot and on canal boat. Many old buildings dating back to 11th century. No evidence of a memorial to the "Young man from Ghent" immortalised in the limerick but suspect a statue depicting his anatomy would have been taken down by the LTBG&T lobby by now.Read more

  • Dinant

    June 8, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Settled for a few days in this riverside town in southern Belgium, which seems to be renowned for jaz and saxophone in particular..

Quiet woodland site beside the river a 5 miles bike ride to the town, which we explored today visiting the citadel via cable car. Enjoying the warm weather which seems to be bathing most of Europe at the moment.Read more

  • Kayak down the Lesse

    June 9, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

Went for a quiet canoe trip down the river next to the camp site. Train trip 12k up river then paddled back. Found that lots of others had the same idea so it was a bit crowded. More like dodgem cars than canoes but great fun with some dramatic rapids. No sign of Health and Safety here!Read more

  • Cycling down the Leffe Valley

    June 10, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Just over 20 miles circular route today, taking in chateau and "Beaux Villages" . Pleased to have electric for the first half as Belgium certainly has some hills. Cruised down through the Leffe valley and celebrated with lunch and a beer on the Meuse. The Leffe brewery has moved out of town now but its origins were at the monastery in Dinant back in the 12 th century.
Moving onwards tomorrow but probably not through the rocks!

  • Luxembourg

    June 11, 2023 in Luxembourg ⋅ 🌙 22 °C

Moved on to the Grand Duchy and immediately impressed by the cleanliness and order. Found a riverside campsite and although almost full were offered a double pitch partly in the shade. To hot to do anything much but walked into the nearby town in early evening. Hoping for a cycle ride down the river tomorrow.Read more

  • Vianden

    June 12, 2023 in Luxembourg ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Took the cycle paths along the Saur and Our rivers to Vianden. Climbed the hill in the chair lift to look over town and castle as too hot to walk. Apparently the castle is in top 21 most beautiful castles in the world......wasn't that impressed.
However Luxembourg is impressive. -Public transport free....all subsidised and diesel €1.40.
    -Cycle paths everywhere
    -No noise and no litter
    -Wonderful food in supermarkets
Apparently 50% of residents are foreign, can see why.

  • In Germany (just)

    June 14, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

When en route to a new venue went walking in the area known as Little Switzerland, although the highest point is only 400m! Had booked into a campsite in the area for 5 nights but arrived to find it was rubbish. Fortunately a better one was just across the river which is the border with Germany. Lovely spot.Read more

  • Luxembourg by bike

    June 16, 2023 in Luxembourg ⋅ 🌙 18 °C

Cycled from our site on the German border to Luxembourg city, 30 miles, which not far off the length of the country. The first 5 miles were uphill but the cycle path mostly followed an old railway line so beautiful scenery and no traffic. Impressive city built on high ravines, clean and with a vibrant atmosphere. The return journey was by bus and all public transport is free, no tickets, just jump on with your bike.Read more

  • Hiking the gorges

    June 18, 2023 in Luxembourg ⋅ ☁️ 26 °C

Set off early ish for 10k hike up through impressive gorges and woodland, up being the operative word! Amazing rock formations but all very dry, nothing in the stream beds. Hot muggy day so inactive afternoon. As I write, our first drops of rain this trip are falling but hopefully not enough to prevent our first evening meal out of the trip.Read more

  • Saarburg

    June 19, 2023 ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

Moved to Saarburg which is on the Saar River before it joins the Mosel. First German supermarket of this trip and a reminder of how bad they are! On quite a big site specifically for motorhomes which is good value at 36 Euro for 3 nights but you have to pay for water and waste water discharge, and buy electricity at 0.7 Euro per kWh. The shape of things to come.
Walked along the river into town which has a waterfall and a "Little Venice"

  • A Trip to the Cloud (Cloeuf)

    June 20, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

We had some heavy rain overnight, which in turn has increased the humidity.
Looking for relief we cycled 15 mls up the Saar to an Oxbow in the river at Mettlach. We then ditched the bikes and climbed 250 m to the view point, a round trip of about 6 miles through the forest alongside trickling streams so cooler than most other places.
Of course we had to cycle back so earnt an early evening drink in the picturesque town before back to shower off the graveyard of insects we appeared to accumulate on our bodies en route.

  • Still Saar

    June 21, 2023 in Germany ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Quite day today and not on bikes till after 4pm. Short ride to the confluence of Saar and Mosel. Ride back passed a very noisy lake hidden behind trees, the noise coming from hundreds of cormorants and herons on and around their nests. All the trees below have turned white from the "deposits". Ended with an exotic ice cream.Read more

  • Mooching on the Moselle

    June 23, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

We moved here yesterday. Staying on a site which is practically empty but does have a washing machine which was handy.
The weather remains hot and mainly sunny , though less humid after lots of storms in the area yesterday.
Today we cycled upstream from France, through a German village and then into Schengen, which sits in Luxembourg but from where you could throw a stone into both France and Germany.
This morning we shared the cycle path that runs the length of the river, with what seemed like all the junior school age children from the local area out on a supervised ride and by the time we were making away back the Mamil's were coming out in force.........."middle aged men in lycra".

We did top up our picnic with 2 amazing apple turnovers, so good that we could be tempted to cycle back tomorrow! 😀

  • Montherme

    June 24, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Decided to head west to the Ardenne where we may well spend most of our remaining days of the trip. In avoiding a route through Luxembourg city David's navigation took us where motorhomes rarely, if ever, tread. At least it was scenic! Now on a riverside pitch in a quiet campsite, at least it would normally be quiet but this weekend is a holiday weekend of St John the Baptist with a rock festival in the town. Perhaps St John will be the main act and dunk some revellers in the river!Read more

  • Cycling the Meuse

    June 25, 2023 in France ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

Cycled downstream along the river today past numerous identical picture postcard villages on the banks. Convoys of Canada geese everywhere. Reached Revin, a town on yet another ox bow on the river, famed for its old Spanish House and, by the looks of it, paragliding. Generally very quiet, the revellers must have been having a lie in, which we emulated in the afternoon as it is still warm here.Read more

  • Back in Belgium

    June 29, 2023 in Belgium ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Took advantage of the less good weather to travel a couple of hours westwards. Initially planned for somewhere in France but put off by the news of riots. Now near Tournai which we plan to explore tomorrow. Pitched at a near perfect Aire, La Ferme du Vert Marais, unusual for an aire as it has large pitches with hardstanding and grass.Read more

  • Last day

    July 1, 2023 in France ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Made the best of a rainy day to do a last shop and travel onwards towards Calais. Found a good hypermarket but peace disturbed by an explosion - not outside but within. The toilet cassette distributed its contents throughout the washroom area due to a fault in the pressure relieving valve. After extensive cleaning up including bucket knockovers drenching the carpets and such we eventually dried out and made it to a quiet, riot free stopover for the night.Read more
