  • Abel Tasman 1 - entering paradise

    June 7, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

Finally, it’s time to out a recommendation everybody gave me for the south island of New Zealand: Abel Tasman National park.
And it was a truly amazing day: it goes with the water taxi from Marahau to Berk Bay and the skipper took the time to show us some of the most beautiful spots visible from the water - and, as he had little to do, he took us all the way up the 60km track and then back to our destinations. A Seal nursery, wonderful river, arms coming from inland…Read more

A short stop at Cape Farewell, the northern most point of the South Island. And a stroll at amazing Wharariki beach, watching the pups play in a little pool by the sea. 🤩
And Mussel chowder for dinner at cosy Mussel Inn with life music for dinner before I head to the hot pools and sauna at the B‘n‘B.
    What a day ♥️

  • 🚁 off the the Glaciers

    June 11, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 4 °C

One thing Iceland and New Zealand have in common (apart from an amazing amount of nearly untouched nature) are glaciers. And how could one best gaze at them in wonder if not from the air… or even standing right hab too of one.
Hence I take the opportunity and hop into a helicopter to cruise over Fox Glacier - even landing on it - Franz Josef Glacier and all the other ones visible. At best weather I even had a wonderful view of Mount Tasman (3500m) and Mount Cook (3700m) two of the highest mountains in NZ.

  • 🛥️ Cruising Milford Sound

    June 15, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

Another little adventure… as it is not the season for the great hikes… too cold and dangerous … I take a bus tour to Milford Sound Fjords and hop into a cruise ship.
Wonderful views despite the little rain we experience.
That’s as far as I am going to go south I assume.

And even though, it is freezing cold outside, I layer up warmly and head out for a beautiful loop trick with a wonderful view of Lake Tekapo, other lakes, and the mountains around. • Wonderful Christchurch

    June 22, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

As my stay in New Zealand is coming to an end soon, I get to discover the beautiful city of Christchurch. In the aftermath of the massive earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, a lot of buildings in the city are new, and Christchurch still bears signs of the earthquake: buildings, that are destroyed, too dangerous for people to set foot in. But the city itself is vibrant and beautiful. In population, Christchurch has barely 400,000 inhabitants, even smaller than Bonn.Read more

  • My last days in NZ - Auckland

    June 24, 2024 in New Zealand ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

So, this is it! My last day in New Zealand has started and I spend it in Auckland. And Auckland welcome to me with sunshine and near to 20°. That means stripping off some of the layers I really needed in the south. As I arrive on a Sunday afternoon , the city is relatively quiet. I spent Sunday afternoon and Monday, strolling through the city, resting at the port, enjoying café and restaurants, checking out the cities parks and squares, and preparing for my next adventure … .Read more

  • Finally Canada

    June 24, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Time is running and I’m finally at my last country for this trip: Canada. After a 13 hour flight (+1hour on the plane until delayed take off) I arrive in Vancouver - summer, finally!
Thanks to Chris who picked me up, I don’t have to figure out how to get to the hostel - luxury for this trip!
And he even gives me a nice guided tour for my first day: after a Yummi early breakfast, we start at Capilano suspension bridge and tree top walk, strolling through Granville island market lunch at Top&Barrel and off to Jericho Beach.
And I spot sun halos while chilling and planning further trip details at English Bay Beach. What a day - and jet lag kicks in :)

Thanks to Chris, one of my cousins, best friends who lives in Vancouver, I got to stay a few days in a cottage on Galliano Island. And it’s a great time, not only do I have a room for myself for a few consecutive nights - don’t get me wrong I really like staying in hostels, but still having a room to myself and company by people you know, is amazing - I get to enjoy the island, the Bay, some water sports and actually just chill out. And apparently we’re watching the one or the other soccer game of the European championship.Read more

  • The Calgary Stampede 🐎

    July 12, 2024 in Canada ⋅ ☀️ 23 °C

So what to do when you are in Calgary in July? Yes: go to the stampede: a huge Volksfest with rodeos and shows and 1000s of cowboys. What an experience! I was so shocked about the bull wrestling, that I didn’t take pictures of it (it’s like an accident, you cannot keep your eyes off it)

    Wiki:

The Calgary Stampede is an annual rodeo, exhibition, and festival held every July in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The ten-day event, which bills itself as "The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth", attracts over one million visitors per year and features one of the world's largest rodeos, a parade, midway, stage shows, concerts, agricultural competitions, chuckwagon racing, and First Nations exhibitions. In 2008, the Calgary Stampede was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame
