  • Dublin Custom House

    15. Januar 2023 in Irland ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Custom House Quay was built between 1781 – 1791 and is regarded as a masterpiece of European neoclassicism. It was designed by James Gandon (1743 – 1823) who today, is recognized as the leading architect to have worked in Ireland during the 18th century. During the planning stage, Custom House was unpopular with the Dublin merchants who complained that it would move the axis of the city, would leave little room for shipping, and would be built on what was at the time, a swamp. It is said that the Irish people were so opposed to the Custom House and its associated taxes that Gandon was smuggled into the country and had to hide in his own home for the 3 months. The project was eventually completed at a cost of £200,000, an enormous sum at the time. In 1921, during the Irish war of independence, the IRA set it on fire to destroy to disrupt British rule in Ireland. The original interior was completely destroyed in the fire and the dome collapsed. A large quantity of irreplaceable historical records was also destroyed.

  • Dublin Central Bus Station

    15. Januar 2023 in Irland ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

Also visited the bus station in Dublin and then the battery of my handy was empty. In a shop near the bus station I bought 2 day tickets (2x10€), the so-called Leap card, for unlimited travel on public transport in Dublin. The card is valid for 1 day, but can then be topped up again with cash credit.

Busáras from bus + áras "building") is the central bus station in Dublin, Ireland for Intercity and regional bus services operated by Bus Éireann. Designed in the International Modern style, Busáras is also a stop on the Red Line of the Luas system, in Store Street just before the terminus at Dublin Connolly railway station. Áras Mhic Dhiarmada ("Mac Diarmada House") is the official name of the building, which also includes the headquarters of the Department of Social Protection. CIÉ, parent of Bus Éireann, leases the lower floors from the department. Áras Mhic Dhiarmada is named after Seán Mac Diarmada, a leader of the Easter Rising in 1916.

  • Dublin Outskirts

    15. Januar 2023 in Irland ⋅ ☁️ 5 °C

We didn't know where the bus was going, but at a certain point it left the city. After a while we stepped out of the bus and walked a little to see where we were. There was a big park nearby and we asked some people how to get back to the city. We waited a long time for a bus to come at bus stop 'Tolka Valley Park'.Weiterlesen

  • From Dublin to Eindhoven

    15. Januar 2023 in Irland ⋅ ☁️ 4 °C

We had bought tickets in advance (2x 8 €) at the tourist office in Dublin for the Dublin Express to the airport. When we arrived at the departure point (Eden Quay) there were already many people waiting. A bus came by, but it was full and passed us alone. Then another bus appeared, which could still accommodate people, but the organization was very chaotic. There were still people left behind who couldn't come along. We also. People were given a telephone number by an employee where they could submit a complaint, but that did not help us. The employee also could not guarantee whether the next bus would not also be full. Anneke and I had had enough and left for a competitor's bus stop a little further away (Aircoach). Here too, access was anything but smooth. First people who had booked online, then people with a ticket and then the others. We were determined not to wait any longer and luckily were able to come along. The fare was also exactly the same. At the airport we had to walk quite a distance to gate 102.

    Finally back to the Netherlands.

Flight FR3102, two persons (incl. hand luggage) € 59.98 with Ryanair.
