    Kolobrzeg Arrival

    July 31 in Poland ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Today we headed back to to the Polish coast for another long weekend, this time in Kolobrzeg. This is the first town we visited in Poland a few years ago, but we haven’t been back as it is hard to find nice places to stay for some reason. Most are studios which I don’t love (I like having a bedroom and a living space separate so when Raymond gets up earlier than me he doesn’t wake me up. He tries to be quiet, but just him moving around will wake me up after a certain point). When looking for places for this weekend I found a place that fit our wishes, though it is not right in the water. It is right across from downtown on an island in the river inlet which is fun. Small bits of water on both sides that is really nice to walk along (though the views from our place are just okay it is still nice sitting out on the balcony and spying on the birds). In the picture after the fish we are staying in the building on the right side (not the bright Orange one - we can see that spot where I took the photo from the balcony).

It was a bit of a mess trying to get out of Berlin today and there were many times I was like maybe we should just cancel and stay home. First the car rental place didn’t think they would have a car for us so that was stressful trying to find something else last minute (thankfully they found one at another location a bit farther away, but not too far so I went and picked that up). Then the traffic was horrible and I forgot some things so we had to loop around through it a few times which put us behind scheduled (we had to try and get here to pick up the keys before the front desk closed) and I was like we are never going to make it! Luckily we got here with 4 minutes to spare…I feel like there was more as it was thing after thing today going wrong, but once we got here it was so nice and I’m glad we made it! Normally I bring dinner so we don’t have to worry about it (or eat it on the way if we leave later), but there are so many places I wanted to try here and not enough time for them all so we had to eat dinner out. We tried this Thai place that a short walk and was so good!! Panang Curry, pad Thai, and these sticky rice balls with sweet potato for dessert. The dessert was light and delicious and not something we have had before! Everything was so good!

After dinner we took a short walk around town - really only like 1 block farther than we were and then looped around on another street and there were so many fun things we found! Lots of statues and on the side of the military museum there were all these murals depicting the history which was fun. Then a walk along the water back to our place. It had said it was supposed to rain all day, but it was gorgeous here! Perfect weather for sitting outside and enjoying! Tomorrow we will explore town more and see what we find!

  • Kolobrzeg Exploring

    August 1 in Poland ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Today we had a relaxing morning then headed out to explore the town some more. It was pretty wandering around and seeing all the things. Before lunch we found an antique market in the one park and it reminded me of Tuscany as they were everywhere there!

For lunch we went to a pierogi place we went to last time and it was so good! They changed the location slightly and it was much nicer and you could order the pierogis in sets of 4 so we both got our own plates of whichever ones were wanted (some had mushrooms and if they are big pieces I can’t eat that, but Raymond loves mushrooms so it was nice we could pick and choose what we wanted). I got the spinach and potato, lentil, and smoked tofu - they were all very tasty! I also got a cup of the borscht as I wanted to try it…and Polish borscht is not like what I was expecting! You cook it and then strain it so it is basically just broth in a cup. I expected beet pieces and stuff. It was tasty, but kind of odd (though I think it would normally get it with dumplings - they offered it with mushroom dumplings as well).

After lunch we walked along the waterfront and found a rock and mineral market which was fun! Lots of beads too and if my mom and aunt were here I think they would have enjoyed that! Then we went down to the beach and had a nice relaxing afternoon by the water. It was perfect weather most of the day (we did get a few minutes of rain in the morning), but it kept getting cloudy and chilly so we kept pulled out hoodies, then sunny and warm so took them off again and repeat all day. It wasn’t that warm (high was 20C today), but on the beach in the sun I would have jumped in had we brought our swim stuff! We left it at our place since it was pretty chilly when we left this morning and wasn’t supposed to get warmer so we figured it would be too cold!

The waterfront promenade was super busy, but the beach wasn’t too bad! Lots of people walk along the beach so a steady stream of people walking by, but not as many sitting and relaxing. Finally we headed back towards our place to eat dinner and relax on the balcony and as soon as we got up to our place it started pouring! We were just in time!

  • Kolobrzeg Exoloring part 2

    August 1 in Poland ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

I thought I was going to get away with just one post today, but then after dinner I thought let’s walk down along the water to the northern most part of the island we are on and see if we can see the sunset. Well we followed the water and went by the marina and found some live music in an old fort! It was really small, but a really nice layout and the band was really good! It was Havana night so they had a Cuban band and I really enjoyed that! They were probably the best band we have just happened upon! We sat and listened and danced a little bit and it was so much fun! I love happening upon things like this! I even forgot to watch for the sunset as it was behind us!

Such a nice day! Tomorrow is supposed to be similar weather so the plan is to wander the rest of town that we didn’t see today, eat lunch, then relax on the beach in the afternoon and swim if it is warm enough!

  • Kolobrzeg Day 2

    August 2 in Poland ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Today we got up and headed of to find all the sculptures! There were a few cute, fun seagull statues yesterday, and we have seen some a few other places up here so Raymond was wondering how many there were. So I of course looked it up and they are a symbol of this town and made by a local artist! There are 12 here in town (2 we already saw and one we will see again tomorrow - I remember him from the last time) so we set off to find the other ones! Such fun! I put the photos all together at the end of the post and one we almost missed as it was in a cafe seating area, but we found them all!

We also just wandered the rest of town we hadn’t yesterday and it was so nice! Lots of nice parks to wander or hang out in and it was great. We did bring our swimsuits today so we could swim after lunch…and then by 11:30 it was just super rainy. We headed towards lunch and when we got there (the outside seating was covered but open) it really started to pour and was raining all through lunch. We stopped at this Asian Polish place which sounded strange so we wanted to try it. It was kind of a fancy place and all the food was amazing. We got an Japanese tomato soup (there was rice with dehydrated tomato on top on the soup), baked cabbage with polish grey sauce (sauce made from bread), spicy potato noodles, very savory gnocchi with vegan cheese, and a basque cheesecake which we wanted to try, but I didn’t really think I would like it…but it was amazing! If we hadn’t ordered so much I could have eaten it all myself! So good!! All the flavors were very different and not something we have had before. Plus the waitress was super fun and friendly. And not very expensive! I even got fancy homemade lemonade (rhubarb and rose, and a strawberry mint - both delicious!) and Raymond got a beer and it was still not much! I kinda wish I had another slice of that cheesecake now…

After lunch since it was still rainy we decided to wander towards home and then relax on the balcony, though it took us a while to get back here! I think we actual got back later than yesterday! And by the time we got home it was sunny and warm and I was like man! We could be swimming! But the beach is a 30min walk and we were too tired by then. Oh well…maybe next summer we will get to swim!

We did order pizza for dinner, but I forgot to take a photo before we started eating but it was also super delicious! And different flavors than what we normally see. One was tomato, vegan cheese, pumpkin seeds, arugula and balsamic (with mushrooms and olives for Raymond), and the other was cheese, truffle paste, dried tomatoes, balsamic onions and basil and that one was amazing! They were both good, but that one was so so good! All the food has been so good here and not very expensive! We will definitely have to come back just to try more!

Tomorrow we will wander along the beach across the river inlet from town (the side we are staying on) before heading home. This was such a fun day!

  • Last day in Kolobrzeg

    August 3 in Poland ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Today we got up and packed up and headed down to the beach on the side where we were staying…and it was the busiest beach we have seen! So many people, but only right around where you can access the beach. I was surprised as last time it was much emptier, but then again it was winter. We got a perfect parking spot and wandered down to the pier along the beach (there is a military area there so you can only access it from the beach), though they have since blocked it off so we couldn’t walk out on it. Then we headed back and farther down the beach along a forested path which was pretty nice. We had lunch on the beach and relaxed for a bit before heading back towards the car.

The walk back was full of all the animals friends! First were some butterflies that actually let me take their photo! Then we spied some things under the trees on the side of the trail and thought they might be those tiny deer they have here, but they were wild boar! Just munching all the things. Then Raymond almost stepped on a tiny frog that almost hopped right under his foot! And lastly a snake!! My identifying thing said it is an Adder and I don’t think I have ever seen them before! All the animal fun!

When we were eating lunch we had talked about staying a bit later (like another hour) and getting home just in time for dinner as we both had about an hour left in our books, but I like to be home and have the car returned and unpacked before having dinner so we headed out when we normally do and boy was I glad we did! We actually got home an hour later than we should have as there was an accident along the way that added an hour in traffic! And it was still there when we drove by it so leaving later would have probably been even more traffic! As we were driving it kept pushing the arrival time back and back and back so we ended up getting home just in time to heat up dinner (leftover pizza from yesterday) and then returned the car after we ate.

This was a really great weekend. I really loved Kolobrzeg and all the delicious food! We will definitely have to go back again!
