  • Day 27 - Whitby Abbey and 199 steps

    Visiting the iconic Whitby landscapes and sights. Whitby Abbey, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The steep stone staircase of 199 steps up to the Abbey. The last of the town’s traditional smokehouses Fortune’s Kippers. Whitby Jet stone made famous by Queen Victoria wearing it as mourning jewellery.Read more

  • Day 26 - Food & Family

    Two of the most important things in life. Started with breakfast at Mr Coopers Coffee house, coffee and bagels. Scones and coffee at Marie Antoinette’s. Rhea then sampled fish, chips and beans at Abbey Wharf. Finally Dinner at Mister Chips, Whitby Thai crab salad, fish pie, fish & chips for the Cap’ns. Great day!Read more

  • Day 25 - Exploring Whitby

    A day of beach walks and exploring Whitby. Lovely place, very busy and some great people watching. The biannual Goth festival in Whitby provided lots of vibrant and elaborate costumes to see. Laura & Rhea staying on the boat, Jill & John and Nel & Greta came to visit for the day.Read more

  • Day 24 - Passage to Whitby

    An early start to catch the tide up to Whitby. A beautiful morning’s motor sail up the beautiful coastline, crossing Robin Hood Bay. Flat seas and sunny, hardly any wind. Got through the bridge at 10am and tied up in the Marina by 10.30am. Here for a few days.Read more

  • Day 23 - Passage to Scarborough

    Left Grimsby at 8.30am as the lock opened. A slow start getting out of Grimsby, swells from the strong Easterly winds of the last few days made for a bit of a bumpy ride. Once we got past Flamborough Head the sailing was great, wind and tide with us made for a fabulous sail into Scarborough Harbour.Read more

  • Day 22 - HCA Grimsby

    According to legend, Grimsby was founded by a Danish fisherman called Grim. In Old Norse, 'by' means village. The largest fishing port in the 1950s, today it still processes 70% of our seafood. The iconic Grimsby Dock Tower has been there since 1852 and is a monument to the town’s fishing history.Read more

  • Day 21 - Weelsby Woods Walk

    Caught the bus to Weelsby Woods, a lovely open space for Basil to run free. Sunny but still with a cold breeze. Had our first Cobb of the season, Halloumi with chilli jam, haddock and sweet potato chips. Yum!!Read more

  • Day 20 - No events today

    A month today since I finished work, I can honestly say I have relaxed into retirement amazingly well. Slow mornings and leisurely coffees have replaced the early morning alarm clock. No events today, how very lovely. I did actually do some stuff, cleaned the fenders, but only because I wanted to! (annoyingly dirty)Read more

  • Day 19 - Docks Beers

    A day of local exploring and buying a few essential supplies. We ended up in a great local Taproom, Docks Beers. Their beer directly from source at, wait for it, £3.50 a pint. We will be back. To top off the day a local fisherman dropped off some haddock and whiting that they had caught today. Brilliant!Read more

  • Day 18 - Cleethorpes with Laura & Rhea

    First day in Grimsby and very happy with our berth and friendly, helpful staff at the Humber Cruising Association. A lovely surprise visit from Laura and Rhea, who drove from Hull. A trip to Cleethorpes for the afternoon, lovely beach walk and ice-cream.Read more

  • Day 17 - Passage to Grimsby

    An early start to leave Wells just before high tide. Left with buddy boat Us Two who continued up to Hull. We had a nice motor sail up the coast. Slight to moderate sea state, wind 10 gusting to 25 knots. Had to wait for free flow into the lock so spent an hour circling round to wait for the lock to open. Here safe and sound on Fish Dock berth 2, another leg done.Read more

  • Day 16 - Farewell wonderful Wells

    Some gusty winds meant we decided to stay another day. Just love this place, a lovely woodland walk and along Holkham beach this morning and a rum and raisin ice-cream cone this afternoon. Really feels like a holiday today.

  • Day 15 - Enjoying Wells

    A day in Wells, enjoying the walks, the beach and stocking up on a few items needed on board.Great access by dinghy at low tide to the sand bars for balling, one happy Basil. Leaving early in the morning to head further up the coast. Next port Grimsby.Read more

  • Day 14 - Wells to Stiffkey

    In the 18th century Wells was a major centre for brewing, supplying 30% of the country’s malt for brewing. In honour of that we walked to Stiffkey and enjoyed a pint in The Red Lion to support this dying industry. Lovely long walk and we are all tired and hungry, chips on the quay before heading back to Wind Dancer.Read more

  • Day 13 - Passage to Wells

    What a difference a day makes!Calm and sunny conditions made for a pleasant days motor-sail along the Suffolk and Norfolk coast. Spotted porpoises and seals and some great views along the way. Wells-Next-the-sea is a picturesque coastal town with lots going on, great eateries and quite a few pubs.Read more

  • Day 12 - No Sunday scaries

    The realisation that we don’t have to go back to work tomorrow. Even setting an alarm at 5.30am to leave the port is not a bad thing to get up the coast. Onwards and upwards!

  • Day 11 - Day after the night before

    Gusting 30 knot winds made for another broken night sleep, all
    of us were grumpy and tired today. How to get through the day after a bad night sleep? A blustery beach walk, coffee and a cheese & ham toastie at ‘Sunrise at Zak’s’, afternoon of movies and chocolate. An early night tonight.Read more

    Met friends for drinks at The Jolly Sailors at Pakefield, great to catch up with Ian & Linda after over a year. A few pints and then fish and chips from The Chippy on the way home. Back to Wind Dancer with a carbohydrate coma, feeling sleepy!Read more

    Always stuff that needs doing, fixing or cleaning on a boat. How is that possible with 11.5 metres of boat? Laundry, mast light fixing and deck scrubbing today.

  • Day 8 - Somerleyton & The Broads

    Took the train to Somerleyton for a long walk along the Norfolk Broads, another glorious sunny day. A well deserved lunch at The Duke’s Head, a great pub.
    Basil found a stagnant foul-smelling ditch, so we had plenty of vacant seats around us on the train back!Read more

  • Day 7 - Royal Norfolk and Suffolk Yacht

    A day of downtime, a couple of great beach walks with Basil. One happy pooch!

  • Day 6 - Passage to Lowestoft

    Took advantage of the weather and made passage to Lowestoft. Fair winds, sunny and against tide for most of the way. Motor sailed all the way, and had some great wildlife spots along the way! Lots of seals and a porpoise just outside Orford. Seal spotting, 8 to Sarah, 7 to Matt, a close call. But a victory for me, I’ll take it!!Read more
