  • The Griffith Observatory

    August 8, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

On my way back from Downtown to Hollywood I stopped off at the Griffith Observatory. Once again this place had amazing views over all of LA and once again of the Hollywood sign.

  • Walk of Fame - The Good Pt.2

    August 8, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

I quickly came to realise that you can have more than one star on the walk of fame, if you gave outstanding service to numerous fields of entertainment. I came across one of the stars of Gene Autry which said she is the only person to have a star for all 5 categories!Read more

  • Hollywood Bowl (At Night)

    August 8, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

To end the day I returned to the Hollywood Bowl! Through my earlier visit I'd discovered that tickets for the show tonight were as little as $15! So I thought it would be rude not to go to said show at one of the world's most famous venues. The performance was of 'Symphonic Tango & Flamenco' by the LA Philarmonic Orchestra!

Even if I wasn't overly into the music I could tell that they were very good and it was a superb venue with views of the Hollywood Sign behind the stage. There was a lovely atmosphere as people could bring entire picnics and bottles of wine into the venue to enjoy, I just had a bottle of water.

  • Hollywood Sign

    August 9, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

This mornings trek was up to as close as you can possibly get to the Hollywood Sign. I took the bus a lot of the way up before walking up into Lake Hollywood Park. I then meandered through the winding roads of the surrounding neighbourhoods, they were very nice!Read more

  • Sunset Boulevard - Beverley Hills

    August 9, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

When I passed along Sunset Boulevard on the bus the other day I saw this section going through Beverley Hills and though blimey I'll have to go and have a look around there. Palm trees lined the streets everywhere on the roads where the super rich live, some of the houses were incredible!Read more

  • Fairfax

    August 9, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Next up I headed into the Fairfax area which is home to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, a farmers market and a nice shopping centre. I wandered around each but partook in none, instead opting for lunch from the trusted Trader Joe's supermarket!Read more

  • Dinner with Hollie

    August 9, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

This evening I met up with my former uni coursemate, flat mate and PwC Manchester colleague Hollie who 18 months ago transferred to the LA office! We had so much to catch up on given how long we've both been away for and what our plans might be for the future.

We were sat two tables from Hollywood actor David Spade. I asked Hollie if she's had many other celeb sightings and she said not really other than seeing both J-Lo and Steven Gerrard at the same Beverley Hills hotel bar at the same time a few weeks ago!

  • LA > San Fran

    August 10, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 15 °C

After 3 busy but very enjoyable days in LA it was time to move on, this time heading slightly north to San Fran! It was a very early start for my 8:15am flight and let's just say that the pre-5am subway trip was full of charachters as you can imagine.

When I arrived at the airport I managed to watch all the way up to the 87th minute of the Tranmere game which ended up as a 0-0 draw, start as we mean to go on.

As we landed in San Francisco there was actually another plane flying alongside us which I'm not sure I've ever experienced before, not that I ever really have the window seat anyway.

  • First Steps in San Fran

    August 10, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

After an obligatory mid-morning McDonalds and dropping my bags at my hostel I set off to explore the city!

Now I've heard a lot of terrible things of late about San Fran about how rough it is and how it's becoming a zombieland. But alls I can say is that everywhere I went today was absolutely stunning, and nothing at all like the San Fran I'd imagined.

First up I headed through Union Square and down Market Street to the ferry terminal. This had a great view of a bridge, albeit not the one with the golden gates.

  • Alcatraz on the Horizon

    August 10, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

As I continued around the bay area the infamous Alcatraz Island came into view. Ideally I would've liked to visit the island and facility but it turns out you need to book pretty much 2 weeks in advance to have any chance. But still it was cool to see the former residence of Al Capone sat in it's shark infested waters!Read more

  • San Francisco Prom

    August 10, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

I continued my walk along the promenade, some of which reminded me very much of Blackpool, which I wasn't expecting from this place. I also got my first glimpse of the Golden Gate bridge! They do say that San Fran is covered by an eternal fog and they weren't wrong in this instance.Read more

  • Golden Gate Beach

    August 10, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

As I continued along the prom I stopped for a few moments on this beach. A unique location where you have thr Golden Gate bridge to your left, Alcatraz to your right and views of the city over your right shoulder.Read more

  • Golden Gate Bridge

    August 10, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Please excuse the similarities in many of these photos as I ambled around the various footpaths and viewpoints for the best view of the famous bridge! As ever the eternal mist persisted but that's no surprise. When I went under the bridge the wind from the Pacific was absolutely freezing, it's strange that San Fran seems to have so many different micro climates that it can sway between t-shirt to big coat weather within a few minutes.Read more

  • Presidio and Pacific Heights

    August 10, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

It was time for me to wander back from the bridge to my hostel. I'd licked out some more landmarks and nice neighbourhoods on the way and boy they were lovely! First of all I followed the Presidio pathway which ended next to the Walt Disney Family museum. Then I went through a small park and into the gorgeous (but very hilly) Pacific Heights neighbourhood.Read more

  • Lombard Street, Little Italy and China

    August 10, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

As I continued my route back I passed down Lombard Street, a short Street that sits on a hill so steep that the road meanders back and forth continually. I then passed down through the booming Little Italy area, where every restaurant and bar was packed before finishing through Chinatown. Day 1 in San Fran complete and what a lovely place it appears to be!Read more

  • Civic Center

    August 11, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

This morning I set off for another day of exploring. First of all I did get a glimpse of the rougher side of San Fran as I passed along the main road close to the 'tenderloin' district, where all of the homeless live. But after about 10 minutes the homeless started to fade and I was in the civic center with the city hall and a Sunday market!Read more

  • The Painted Ladies & Alamo Square

    August 11, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

The painted ladies are San Francisco's most famous and possibly prettiest row of houses and for this reason attract a lot of attention. However on the other side of the park I found a very similar row of houses garnering no attention at all. In fact San Francisco is full (literally every suburb neighbourhood) of townhouses like this, part of the reason why I think it is so nice!Read more

  • Exploring San Fran

After a prolonged uphill slog I made it to the top of the Twin Peaks aaaaaand it was super cloudy so you couldn't see anything. It was also very windy and cold as a result. However after a short while the mist began to clear and on my decent I could actually see very clearly!Read more

  • Golden Gate State Park

    August 11, 2024 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

The furthest I got today was to Golden Gate State Park. I wanted to go further but I started to get a bit disoriented in the huge park, particularly as there was a big festival on and much of it was unaccesible. I then needed to head back to collect my bag for my flight. However on the tram back I received a notification from Google to say my flight had been cancelled! Whilst the San Fran airport website and Flight Radar also stated this, it was over an hour before the airline contacted me to say it had been cancelled. Not to worry too much though as I was able to re-book onto a flight 2 hours later and they gave me $100 in credits (no idea how I can these though).Read more

  • A Delayed Flight(s)

    August 11, 2024 in the United States ⋅ 🌙 14 °C

So, bit of a debacle. Frontier Airlines cancelled both the 7:50pm and 10:07pm flights to Vegas, the latter being cancelled 10 minutes before we were due to board, despite the plane we were flying in being at the airport, although it did do some weird loops a while before landing.

I was then rebooked onto the 10:41am flight the next day and told to wait in the airport to hear about accomodaton for the evening. Over 2 hours later at past 1am I was then told that accomodation wouldn't be provided and at this point the last train into San Francisco had long gone. So I was stuck in the airport for almost 10 hours, and not able to sleep anywhere really since all the connected chairs have unmovable armrests.
