    Rome Day 1

    September 21, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

So, this is my 5th time in Rome and it never disappoints. I always see and learn something new. Susan and I were here 14 years ago, but the Forum. The Pantheon, Colosseum and The Trevi Fountain were closed due to major renovations. So, we are doing it all again with newbies Taylor Kate Clark and Onna Yates , although she has been to Rome before too! Lovely day!
Today was a great day to walk around the city, with some purpose but a good amount of wanderlust. Here are a few pictures of our day. The highlight of the day is Tim answered his phone on the second ring!

    Pompeii and Sorrento

    September 23, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 66 °F

A another EPIC day in Pompei and Sorrento. Our guide this morning was Antonio, from Napoli. He is an archeologist and has spent most of his adult life excavating Pompei. I can retell the whole story here, it is just too big. The main take - aways for me was a reminder Southern Europe did not know about Christ until a century after his death. I forget this often, mostly because Peter and Paul had not made it to Rome yet. Once they were here. They were imprisoned and of course you remember Peter is crucified upside down on a hill side overlooking St Peter's Basilica. In Pompei, the frescos, mosaiacs and beautiful sediments and brick work are tell the story of life in Pompei. One of the most interesting points to discover is the archeologist Perilli, in 1864ish. Pompei was not discovered for many centuries after Vesusvius. In fact, many fled the city after the earthquakes, the 25 or so year long precursor to Vesuvius, lead pipes that brought water to the city were all destroyed, so many moved on. Now we know many stayed. Now, back to Perilli, he had tons of plaster pumped into the voids of compacted ash. So, if there was an apple on the table, the ash would incase the object void or body of the person. You have to imagine after several centuries. The apple is gone, the void relief of the object was style there. For human remains, All that would be left are bones. You will see the body of a woman in a case, and a dog. She was a wealthy woman, she lives on as a plaster representation of who she was. More stories later, then on to Sorrento. I hope you enjoy our day. Susan Frcka, Taylor Kate Clark and Onna Yates!Read more

    Florence and Montopoli

    September 25, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

Today we left the craziness of Roma and enjoyed the craziness of Florence at a little slower pace. Our driver dropped us off at an area of the Termini I had no idea existed, once we walked and walked and lugged and tugged all our luggage and bags of shopping up and down the the #$%^&*g stairs. We finally made to the correct binario for Florence. Once in Florence, we stowed our luggage and, well you know, shopping again and noshing on incredible pasta, we headed back to Santa Novella to grab our car. I've always wanred to drive an Alfa Romeo! So, here we are in paradise in Montopoli, the perfect hilltop Tuscan town. We are pooped and excited about thermal spa tomorrow. Massage and all manner of treatments! Goodnight!Read more

    Spa day!

    September 26, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 75 °F

So, the Italian spa! What vision do you have? No. I promise you, it is not that, trust me!
We first walked in and I thought we were in a 3rd world hospital! People were sitting in booths with disposable plastic tube's up their noses, and I really didn't want to go further!
The sauna was amazing, so now we are sitting in a sweet little spot waiting for the rest of our treatments. The thermal spring spa was so relaxing.

    Salt!

    September 28, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 68 °F

Today was a reflection day. Today represents why I love Italy so much. My morning started with a prayer while at the bedroom window, with the sunrise and renewed faith that family and friends are safe, dry and out of harms way. Susan decided to go to Chianti with me. Driving in Italy is easy, but you really need a co-pilot. There is a lot going on at the 150 million roundabouts in this country!
Reflection. So, I discovered Panzano through Alessandro Cammilli Wine Tours. I have missed him on this trip, but I am grateful he has taught me so much. Not to worry my friend, I appreciate you and I would prefer you drive me around! Reflection: salt. So, the girls ( Taylor Kate Clark and Onna Yates ) don't get salt. That's okay. They haven't lived enough. This journey to Panzano in Chianti, the beautiful layers of the town, the artists, the wine, Nonna's lasagna, and the sweetness in the air IS the flavor of salt. We stopped in a small town, almost a splat in the road, Talente, on the Chianti Classico Road. We were looking out at the views of Chianti and a little man, Marcello, peeked around the corner of his garden gate, his wife, was upstairs, motioned for us to come over. Marcelo has a twinkle in his eye and a very firm handshake, Franca, his wife, is someone I would want to know. She has secrets...you can just tell! They are very proud of their home, the lemon trees, the cistern for rain water and most of all, the olive trees! They wanted us to stay and have lunch, pasta with tomatoes and wine. They couldn't speak a word of English and our Italian is limited, but we were able to communicate beautifully. We met Sabine, a wonderful artist from Findland, but has lived most her life in Italy. She is starting to branch out to abstract watercolor. She is authentic, soulful and talented. Next we want to Savingola Paolina, a winery about 4 miles from Panzano. Alice, who I've met previously, represents Paolina, the woman who created the Ora Chianti Classico back in the 40s. She never married and she was the first woman to manage the agricultural and vinoculture process in this region. She set the standard for Chianti Classico. In fact, Ora was the first Chianti wine to receive the DOCG, the highest level of quality and has continued to have one of the earliest designations in Chianti. With shipping, the average price per bottle of Ora is around $18.00.
So today was about salt. I hope when you go wherevever you go, You find a memory like salt. I use it everyday at home. I do have to say this particular salt is like no other. It is a special recipe and is not found anywhere in the world, except Panzano. It has made lifelong friendships, such as Kristy Hannahs Feil (we actually met thru Alessandro, and finally met after about 4 years in April! All because of salt!
