The Night Bus

Piccadilly Circus was a really great spot to explore! There always seems to be something going on and there's so much here to see and do. Our guide, Sinead, could have turned this area itself into the whole tour and I still don't think we would have seen all of it! She had so many interesting stories about the history of Piccadilly Circus, too. So far, I'm really enjoying this tour!En savoir plus

Bus Stop

I still haven't had a ride on one of the these classic red double-decker buses. I've really got to take a ride on one before we go home. I hope that we get to ride on the top deck when we have our bus ride. It just wouldn't be a trip to London without a ride one one iconic buses!En savoir plus

Splendid Sweets

One of the first stops on the tour was Fortnum and Mason, a very upscale store that sells primarily tea as well as many types of cookies, candies, and biscuits. All of it is beautifully packaged and looks like the sort of thing you would give as a gift. Workers were going around the room giving out samples and everything was delicious, with the exception of a special holiday blend tea. Kathy and I both thought that it tasted like medicine! We wanted to pick up some things here to give people back home but we didn't want to be carrying everything around on the tour with us. We decided to come back later, since it's so easy to get to from Piccadilly Circus.En savoir plus

Jam Session

Jams, jellies and marmalades seem to be very popular treats in England. Fortnum and Mason had a entire section of their store devoted to them. I enjoy jam and jelly but I'm not really sure what a marmalade is. I know it's something like a jelly but not quite. What's the difference between jams, jellies and marmalades? I just remembered about preserves. Where do preserves fit in?En savoir plus

Cookies or Biscuits?

The packaging of everything at Fortnum and Mason is fantastic! Everything just screams luxury and special tastes. I like the monkey package for these cookies but I'm not sure about the flavor. Pistachio and clotted cream doesn't sound very appealing. What is clotted cream anyway? I think it's a British thing, because I've never seen it in America. These are cookies but the British call them biscuits. Although we speak the same language, a lot of our words have very different meanings. I wonder what they would call the food we know as biscuits here. I'm not sure, but I think they call that a scone, unless that's another variation on the traditional biscuit.En savoir plus

Carousel Biscuits

This biscuit tin shaped like a carousel was so beautiful! It's a music box too, because it's able to play carousel music. We were thinking of getting this for Janet but, I must admit, I wouldn't mind having one of these for myself, too! I've always been a fan of carousels and this is something so unique to have! I'm really looking forward to coming back to this great store!En savoir plus

Holiday Windows

The windows of Fortnum and Mason were all decorated for Christmas, reminding me of what we do here in New York for the holiday season. I really wanted to stay here for a bit and see all of the windows and try getting some good shots. Holiday windows can be very tricky to shoot because of the difficult lighting and, even worse, the reflections on the glass. Of course, Sinead had us rushing down the street so I had to snap this on the run. I'll be back!En savoir plus

The Glockenspiel

High above the entrance to Fortnum and Mason was a very fancy glockenspiel. Sinead, our tour guide, pointed it out to us as we exited Fortnum and Mason and walked across the street. This was a very difficult shot to get because, since darkness had fallen, it was nearly impossible to even see this fancy clock, let alone photograph it. I was the only person in our tour group who even attempted to get a shot of this.En savoir plus

A Closer Look

Here's a closer look at the Glockenspiel on top of Fortnum and Mason. My original shot was an almost completely black image and it took a lot of processing to end up with this. I remember people in our tour group were looking at me like I was crazy to take this shot while it was so dark. While it took some doing, I now have the image, and they have nothing. Always at least TRY for the shot. Even if it doesn't work out you can just erase it and nothing was lost except a few seconds. If the shot does work out, you'll come away with an image you can keep forever. Always try!En savoir plus

The next place Sinead took us to was a very fancy and upscale chocolate store with a very catchy name, Choccywoccydoodah. It's a mouthful, but it sounds almost like something out of a song. I think the name sounds better sung then just said normally.En savoir plus
