  • Oh, No...

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 55 °F

I knew that something I ate wasn't agreeing with me. I barely made it into the room before I had to make a dash into the bathroom. I told Kathy and Bryan to go and have lunch without me. I'm not feeling well enough to wander the streets of Rome right now. I see that our bathroom has a bidet. This is something that we've never used before. I have a feeling that I'll be learning how to use it today.Read more

  • A Tasty Lunch

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 55 °F

Kathy and Bryan ended up eating at a restaurant called Piccolo Arancio. I'm guessing that Bryan was the one who picked it. Kathy was sending me pictures of the food that they ordered. It looks very tasty! I wish that I could have been there.Read more

  • Cooks in Action

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 55 °F

It must have been so interesting to watch the cooks making all the food. I would have really enjoyed this. Too bad I'm suck at the hotel trying to figure out how to work the bidet.

  • Pasta

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

Kathy loves Italian food and has been wanting to try real Italian pasta for a long time. Once she finally had it, she said that it wasn't quite what she thought it would be. The pasta was a bit hard, as if it wasn't cooked all the way. We'll have to try some more restaurants to see if her meal was undercooked or if this is just the way pasta is eaten here.Read more

  • Free Walking Tours

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

After Kathy and Bryan returned from having lunch, we rested up for a bit before going back out to go on our free walking tour of Rome. We usually schedule at least one of these tours whenever we go on vacation.
We were disappointed with this tour and dropped out of it fairly quickly. This is the first time that we've just walked off of a tour but there was so many people on the tour that we could barely get close enough to the tour guide to hear what she said. We enjoy the smaller groups much more. The main reason that we left the tour was after hearing the itinerary. It was all of the same places that we walked around seeing this afternoon. There's too much to see in Rome without seeing everything twice on the same day. We have another free walking tour scheduled in a couple of days. I hope our next tour will be better.

  • The Kiosk

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

We saw so many of these kiosks on the streets of Paris and they seemingly sell almost anything you might need. I guess that these kiosks are a European thing because we're seeing a lot of them around Rome also. We haven't bought anything from them yet but if I need something, I know where to go!Read more

  • Let's Walk

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

It's starting to rain again, and get dark, but we wanted to go and see something rather than just go back to the hotel. I think that we were all looking forward to that tour, which is why we wanted to go exploring now. Since it wasn't very far away, we decided to go and see the Pantheon.Read more

  • 150 Flavors

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

On our way to the Pantheon we passed Gelateria Della Palma, a grand ice cream parlor with a sweeping counter and a sidewalk terrace, offering 150 gelato flavors. This place definitely warrants a closer look.Read more

  • Gelateria Della Palma

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

They didn't exaggerate at all. I've never seen so many different flavors of gelato in one place. I'm not sure how good the gelato actually is though because we're seeing mostly tourists in the shop and many of the gelatos have bright vivid colors. I'm remembering that old saying, if the colors too bright, the gelato ain't right.Read more

  • Chocolate Overload

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

There were so many variations of chocolate gelato, each looking better than the last. If I was going to get gelato here, I'd be hard pressed to pick a flavor. They all look so good!

  • The Pantheon

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

It was a bit longer of a walk than I had expected but we finally made it to the Pantheon. The Pantheon is the best-preserved ancient Roman building in Rome. Because the Pantheon was turned into a church, it was kept remarkably well-preserved. In fact, you can still experience the building much as the ancient Romans would have. Sure, some things have changed (there’s a Christian altar here now, for example, and frescoes of saints), but the dimensions of the building, along with much of its decoration, has remained the same.Read more

  • No Entry

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

We quickly discovered that nobody was being allowed inside the Pantheon right now because of a church service that was taking place inside. We could either line up and wait for a chance to get in or we could leave and start heading back to the hotel.Read more

  • Waiting in the Rain

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

It's no surprise that we decided to wait for a chance to go inside the Pantheon and take a look around. The Pantheon is a bucket list sort of place and all of us were very eager to see it.

  • Fountain Details

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

The Fontana del Pantheon was commissioned by Pope Gregory XIII and is located in the Piazza della Rotonda, Rome, in front of the Roman Pantheon. It was designed by Giacomo Della Porta in 1575 and sculpted out of marble by Leonardo Sormani.Read more

  • Out and About

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

Despite the weather, there were lots of people out and about. I wondered if they were here to see the Pantheon or were just out for a night on the town. This area seems to have lots to bars and restaurants so it could be either choice. At least we're not too far back on the line to get inside the Pantheon.Read more

  • Faces in the Fountain

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

I'm glad that we're getting to see this fountain at night, in the rain. The dark wetness give it a very different sort of a look than what I would expect to see during the day. These faces have a very macabre and creepy look to them right now.Read more

  • A Long Wait

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 50 °F

This is how far back on the line we were. It doesn't look too bad from here because the line extended very far behind us. I'm not sure how much longer the wait is going to be, but I hope that it won't be too much longer. Standing in the rain isn't all that fun.Read more

  • Listening to Services

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

While we were waiting, we could hear a mass being broadcast out into the courtyard. We couldn't figure out where it was coming from but we assumed it was coming from inside the Pantheon.

  • Still Listening

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

This mass seems to keep going on and on. It's all in Italian, or possibly Latin, so we can't even really listen to it or have any idea how much longer it has to go. I just hope it ends soon. This fountain out front is keeping me interested in the meantime.Read more

  • A Little History

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

The Pantheon is the best preserved Ancient Roman monument. It's a bit of a mystery how the Pantheon managed to survive barbarian raids when all the rest of Roman monuments had been shattered. Its turning into a church in 609 AD has a lot to do with it in later time, but also the structure itself is way ahead of its time. In fact, the exact composition of the material is still unknown and appears to be structurally similar to modern day concrete! Whatever the reasons are, the Pantheon is the only structure of its age and size that has successfully survived the damage of time and gravity, still intact with all its splendor and beauty.Read more

  • Ready to Enter

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

The church service has finally ended and we're ready to go inside the Pantheon. We're so excited to see what's inside this amazing building. The Pantheon is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and was very high on our "must see" list of attractions in Rome.Read more

  • We're In!

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

We finally made it inside the Pantheon! This is my first look at it and, I must say, I'm very impressed! I feel like I'm stepping back in history!

  • The Oculus

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

When the Pantheon was built the only source of light was the oculus in the centre of the dome. Obviously being open to the elements means it also rains inside the Pantheon but a gently sloping floor and 22 well-hidden holes help the water to drain away.Read more

  • Looking Around

    November 9, 2019 in Italy ⋅ 🌧 54 °F

Here’s a look around the Pantheon. Kathy shot this video and while I’m glad to get a look all around the inside, I’m surprised that she didn’t look up at the ceiling. It’s okay though. I got plenty of shots of that!Read more
