  • BVI sit

    August 2, 2024 in British Virgin Islands ⋅ 🌬 86 °F

After arriving by ferry to Tortola west end, we were picked up by Sarah. We got to the house, which sits up on the hill with a great view of the ocean and a few islands off in the distance. Looking forward to exploring more of the island.
We have a friend waiting for us outside.

  • Smugglers Cove

    August 6, 2024 in British Virgin Islands ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

Just a short 30-minute walk from where we are staying is one of the more famous beaches on Tortola. Smugglers Cove Beach. Today, we walked over to it to take a dip in the beautiful waters.

  • Josiah's Bay Beach

    August 18, 2024 in British Virgin Islands ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

A hidden gem on Tortola. It's not easy to get to, but well worth the effort. There is a surf school that rents boards and kayaks but wasn't open. Maybe for the season. There was a volleyball net set up, but we only briefly saw four other visitors at the beach. There is also a nice little cafe/bar for refreshments.
We played in the surf 🏄‍♂️ for an hour, doing a little body surfing and just enjoying the sea. Then we finished off with an ice-cold bubbly water at Serves Up.

  • Walk up the hill

    August 19, 2024 in British Virgin Islands ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

While taking Moe on his walk up the hill, we pass an obviously abandoned driveway. Satellite images show two houses up there, so we decided to explore. We didn't see how to get to one of the homes, but the other, which was quite in disrepair, got explored. Simple floor plan, small pool, and a million dollar view.Read more

  • Brewers Bay

    August 20, 2024 in British Virgin Islands ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

We heard there was some good snorkeling at Brewers Bay, so we decided to check it out. Unfortunately, it was too soon after the tropical storm, Ernesto, passed (1 week), and the water was still murky from runoff in the mountains. Still, we enjoyed a long walk on the beach and a short swim in one of the cleaner-looking spots.
We did a little exploring afterward and came across an old sugar mill ruin. Unfortunately, it was too overgrown to explore.

  • Sage Mountain National Park

    August 22, 2024 in British Virgin Islands ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

We attempted to take Moe on a new hike, but discovered animals are not allowed in the park. He got a short walk in, and we will return without him to do some more hiking. Next time we will bring some bug spray. 🦟Read more

  • Calwood Rum Distillery

    August 23, 2024 in British Virgin Islands ⋅ ☀️ 88 °F

So, I heard there was this rum distillery on the island, and I was like, "I want to go!" And then we found out it's the only one that's been in operation since it opened over 400 years ago, and we were like, "we have to go. "
This place has been around since the 1600s, and they still make rum the traditional way. They even have the original boiler.
It used to be a plantation and distillery, but now they buy sugarcane from local farmers. The rum is only available on Tortola because they can not produce enough to export elsewhere.
We got a tour of the facility, which looks as old as it is. But it was quite interesting seeing the old crusher and the diesel engine (added in the 60s) that runs it. We were also shown something large covered by a tarp and told it was the steam engine that powered the crusher for a while. Before that, it was donkeys.

  • BVI dive trip

    September 4, 2024 in British Virgin Islands ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

It was imperative that we partake in at least one scuba diving excursion during our stay in the Virgin Islands. Given that we missed the opportunity to do so during our three-month stay on St. John, it was essential that we rectify this situation.

We embarked on two dives at the HMS Roane, a renowned vessel that, despite its unsinkable reputation, met its fate in the depths of the ocean in 1867. During our dives, we were captivated by the breathtaking coral formations, the vibrant array of marine life, and even had the privilege of encountering an octopus.

  • Virgin Gorda

    September 5, 2024 in British Virgin Islands ⋅ ⛅ 86 °F

We took a ferry to Virgen Gorda to see the famously beautiful Baths. They did not disappoint. There is a one-way path around the two adjacent National Parks, so if you don't stop and see all the sights on your way to the last beach, you have to make the entire loop again.
The rock formations here are much different then we've seen anywhere else in the Virgin Islands. Incredible the way these huge boulders lay beside and on top of each other. It creates mystical pathways for you and for the ocean waters to meet. We had to only do the loop twice, and actually, we snuck back out the entrance. It was fortunately not a busy day.
