    Tokyo

    May 15, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 63 °F

After getting our bording passes, we wandered through th SIN airport so we could see this giant indoor waterfall. Then we caught our red-eye flight out of Singapore that got us into Tokyo at 0600. Tired and cranky, we were very excited to start a new adventure. After five weeks in Singapore, I forgot about the challenges of visiting foreign speaking countries.
First challenge, getting from the airport to the hotel. ✔️ Next vegan food ✔️
We worked so hard at trying to cut our luggage weight down that we threw away much of our warm clothes. Oops! It's cold and rainy here 😨 We checked out this shopping street, had some good food, and finished the day at a traditional bath house.

  • Shibuya scramble

    May 16, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

Since we were unable to score tickets to the Sumo tournament, we strolled through a traditional Japanese garden before continuing to one of the busiest intersections in the world. It's not just the intersection that's busy. The whole area is. We found the largest anime store, got lost in a home improvement store, toured the Tower Records tower, and hung around till it dark. There are some fancy public toilets here.Read more

  • Shibuya at night

    May 16, 2023 in Japan ⋅ 🌙 68 °F

Stuck around so long it got dark. We went to an observation point high above the busy intersection and took a few more photos.

  • Asakusa shrine

    May 17, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 86 °F

On the way to the Asakusa shrine, we walked down a covered walking street lined with vendors and restaurants. We stopped at a semi traditional restaurant where they cook your food in front of you, at the table.
At the shrine, we paid for a fortune, which turned out to be bad, so we tied the fortune to the bad fortune rack and left it there.

  • Sky Tree

    May 17, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 82 °F

From asakusa shrine, we walked to the Tokyo Sky Tree. On the way, we found a small mochi shop and picked up some delicious sweets. Then we elevated 450 meters above the rest of Tokyo. Unfortunately, it was hazy, so we couldn't see Fuji ama, but otherwise an ok view of Tokyo.
Afterward, we went back and forth on the train to find a vegan sushi place before walking back to the hotel.

  • Imperial Palace

    May 18, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 90 °F

We arrived at the Imperial Palace, literally just in time to sign up for a tour. We had no idea of the limited tour opportunities, so in that sense, we totally lucked out. They only allow 140 people in twice a day. Many people reserve a spot months in advance. We had no idea that was an option. So, like I said, we totally lucked out. However, once in, they divide the 140 up by language. There were close to 100 English speakers, but only one guide. You don't go inside at all, so it's only a brief walk around the grounds, and you can't hear the guide. The tour itself was not that great, so I don't know how lucky we really were. However, the self guided east gardens tour was much nicer. Unfortunately, we were slightly worn out, so it didn't get all the attention it deserved.Read more

  • Akihabara

    May 18, 2023 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

After the Imperial Palace, we caught the train at Tokyo station to the Akiba neighborhood. The land of cosplay restaurants and anime and video game geeks. Plenty of girls dressed up in maid outfits lined the streets, trying for customers to their restaurant or bar. Unfortunately, it's a large cover charge to go in and be teased and talked to by these girls. We passed on the cosplay and found a vegan Ramen shop for some delicious noodles and after found a Japanese dessert house. The desserts were ok, but probably won't go back.Read more
