  • 1. Day Osaka -> Hyogo 72km

    October 30, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

    I set off on my bike for the third time. First, I left Osaka and went to Kobe to eat at Jesus Pizza. The owner learned to make Pizza in NewYork and fulfilled is dream in opening this pizza place. Very authentic American. Big recommendation!
    Nearby, I found an old, European-looking house with a café inside. It was perfect. While drinking coffee, I read Murakami's 1Q84. On the way to Fukusaki, I enjoyed Lake Tsukuhara. After going a bit further, I set up my tent by the river.

  • 2. Day Fukusaki, the Yōkai town 78km

    October 31, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

    At the Tourist Information I discovered a yōkai stamp rally. Went around whole fukusaki. After I took my time to repair my bike. Got furious because it was tedious... With the power of anger I flew to Himeji Castle. Afterward got a coffee at the sea and chilled with cats. Made it to Akashi ferry and took the last one over to Awaji Island. At the next park right at the ocean I found a nice place to sleep.Read more

  • 3. Day Awaji Island West 55km

    November 1, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

    I slept till 9. Wow! The sun isn't waking me in the morning. I decided to take the northbound route around Awaji. Right when I started I started to rain. I didn't know but it shouldn't stop for two days. I took breaks at a burger place with fried onions. Awaji is famous for their onions. Burger was Oishiii af! After I found cute speciality coffee place with one of the best light roasts I had for some time! Due to the rain and the night I struggled to find a place to sleep. I was really close to giving up. But it wasn't a option to give up. Halfway around Awaji, I found a nice park with a view of the Onaruto Bridge, where I could put my tent up. I even took a shower in a disabled toilet. A Really windy and rainy night.Read more

  • 4. Day Awaji Rain 34km

    November 2, 2024 in Japan ⋅ 🌬 24 °C

    One of the toughest 24 hours. The rain wasn't stopping. I went to a cute nearby Café with great Toast Monsieur and a nice chat wie the owner. In the nearby city of Minamiawaji I had the best Tonkatsu! I reminded me of the one I had in Singapore. Very crunchy and small pieces! I headed to a nearby Super Sento nearby which wasn't accepting tattoos but I thought, I just try out the stickers I bought from the last journey. I went inside and tried to put on the stickers, which first where too small for Misa and the rings and they weren't properly sticking on my skin... I tried it even tough to enter. The two I had fell off and I just tried to spend as much time possible inside. In the end nobody said anything and I rested in the chill area and read. In the morning I needed to call the bus company to reserve a space fory bike for the ride between Awaji and Tokushima. No other possibilities to cross over. I am not allowed to enter the bridge, nor is there a ferry. Just highway. Haijaaaa. After the Sento I just went back to park from the day before cause I knew I could camp there in unbothered.Read more

  • 5. Day Awaji -> Tokushima 40km

    November 3, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

    I thought that I was clever sleeping next to small building which should fend off the wind but it didn't help at all. Either my tent is really bad or the winds were too strong. Waking up at 5:30 am. Packed my stuff and went to the Onaruto Interchange Bus Stop. I got nervous but I worked out just fine in the end. Just needed to take off the front wheel, some bags and put down the seat.
    After arriving in my newest prefecture Tokushima, I went on a small route around the islands of Naruto with the view of the Whirlpools under Naruto Bridge. At 2 I went to a football match of Tokushima against Kagoshima, which Tsukushima Won 1:0. After I headed straight to my hotel to charge, rest, dry etc.

  • 6. Day Tokushima -> Kaiyō 78km

    November 4, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

    Checked out of the Hotel and wanted to buy rain pants and a stronger light for my bike but unfortunately, it was a holiday and everything was closed. The only thing I could do was going to a cafe before leaving off to the coast. Actually went first to my first Udon place and had for just 490¥ a big bowl of damn tasty Udon! On the way I found another speciality coffee place, which suited just my taste. Viby, rocky with guitars, projector which showed a movie called coffee and cigarettes by Jim Jarmusch. After, all went as planned and I arrived in Kaiyou around 7 pm. Before I took a beautiful scenic route called Minamiawa Sanrainu. Close the the sea in a park I could put up my tent. While listening to the waves, I ate sushi and listened to Dearly Beloved from Kingdom Hearts and watched the stars.Read more

  • 7. Day Kaiyō -> Mt. Tsurugi 80km

    November 5, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

    I'm starting to sleep really well in my tent. First I went to a Cafe called Ru Beruru, which offered breakfast. Then I started my ascend through the mountains. I made it through two mountain passes. Around 2000 m up and down. After 80km and the incoming night I decided to just go to sleep and start early the next morning.Read more

  • 8. Day Mt. Tsurugi 27km 1200m uphill

    November 6, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

    My plan was to make it to Mt. Tsurrugi before 10 and climb it. But the weather wasn't good and it were still 24 km through the mountains at 8-9 am. I called a hotel at Tsurugi and booked one night. So I can take my time there, rest well and climb tsurugi in the morning. Tomorrow I'll be on my way down to civilization and my short stay of two nights in a hostel in Zentsuji, Kagawa. I found a resting lodge with vending machines and heaters, were I just rested for a couple of hours. The last 24 km to tsurugi were just uphill, around 900m. I booked the room for myself with dinner and breakfast. I could even take a hot bath. Just while taking the bath I realized how much I needed that.Read more

  • 9. Day Mt. Tsurugi -> Miyoshi 68km

    November 7, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 11 °C

    Woke up early for the breakfast and start the hike to the top of Mt.Tsurugi. The breakfast was great! I was surprised by the raw egg, haha. The atmosphere while climbing up the mountain was special, it was mysterious cause it stayed foggy. On the top it got really windy and icy. Everything started to freeze because of the cold wind. The hut on the top was already open and I got myself a hot chocolate and a few stamps. The had many stamps! I also chatted with the cute Waitress and she wanted to see my collection of stamps. She was amazed that it was alsoy diary I was writing in Japanese with kanji. The climb should be around 2 hours, I made it in 1:20 h. The descent was just an half hour in the end. I was full of energy. At the Ryokan I changed and went on to the proper descent by bike. On the way I visited the vine bridges of Iya. I was also able to eat lunch at a very special place: Reiko Tsuzukis Soba shop. She prepared one meal with soba, rice and even fried deer. Super oishi! After the meal she made coffee and brought Lindt chocolate plus she sad down with me to chat. It was a special experience! We talked a lot about the foliage, Alex Ks Chiiori and the upcoming tv show were her shop was shown. On my further way I stopped at cafe with a strange owner. There I run into a couple from Turkey and Switzerland who did bikepacking in Japan 30 years ago! They were so kind and exchanged some cash. Euro to Yen. For the evening I saw my first Konbini after 2 days in the mountains. I had a way to huge dinner with Tonkatsu Ramen and Karaage.Read more

  • 10. Day Miyoshi -> Zentsuji 38km

    November 8, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

    Even tough I was prepared, it was one of the coldest nights till now. I need to prepare for colder nights. Maybe I just book hostels in front from now on. First I needed to get warmed up in a Konbini. Then I startedy my way from Miyoshi to Zentsuji. On the way I stopped at a cafe for coffee and breakfast and a Udon shop for the famous Kagawa Udon. Oishiiiii! Around 2 pm I arrived at my hostel but the check in was just from 4 pm, therefore I went to cafe with nice vibe and a chill view on rice fields. I spent the evening with a few people from the hostel. Also one guy from Taiwan who was doing the Shikoku 88 temples pilgrimage.
    3 very chill days are in front of me. Looking forward to them.
