  • Downhill

    October 25, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 10 °C

So....it was all going so well....I had found the Miño....or at least its beginnings.....and had plans to visit Mandy in Galicia but then it rained.....not just a bit a LOT of RAIN so I diverted to O Cebreiro which we had walked through on the Camino...this time I could see absolutely nothing because of the fog....so I booked a hotel and told Google to take me to it . MISTAKE. There was a notification about a road closure following which Google took me down the track from hell. Well I didn't drop her bike but that is only by good fortune.....Chestnuts are very slippery! I finally arrived at my hotel which is right next to a main road....GOD I HATE GLOBAL CONGLOMERATESRead more

  • Grey Lunch

    October 26, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

So the rain has set in proper like. This grey place is A Gudiña which is on the Camino so hoards of plastic swaddled peregrinos passing whilst I have a disappointing grey lunch and don my own plastic

  • N2

    October 26, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 12 °C

So I am in Chaves.....finally Portugal proper having crossed from Spain then back again and then back to Portugal to bypass the dreaded electronic toll. This is where Portugal's Route 66 the N2 starts which I will follow ( unless I get lost) all the way to Faro. Meanwhile I visit the Castle whilst looking for where the road actually starts.

So I found it! It is 738 km long apparently.....off I go!

  • Viseu

    October 27, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

This city is rarely visited even though it was once briefly the capital of Galicia and then taken by the Goths. Wiki said the Goths contributed very little to the culture....I wonder what Iron Maiden would have to say. The statue is Viriatus who in 130 BC united the Celts in rebellion against Rome and won 8 stunning victories before being murdered by the Senate's paid assassinsRead more

  • Lost!

    October 28, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

This was a big day of getting lost. Riding the N2 is a big thing here.....so they have huge yellow 75 anniversary milestones and brown N2 Rota signs.....all when somebody has found some money to spend the rest of the route there is, well, nothing. Often the road signs do not have road numbers and sometimes the N2 becomes something else and once it was on both sides of a valley at the same time! Now add to that Google Maps wanting to re-route every two minutes and the results is LOST! The trouble started at the top of this dam and then just persisted all day. Still a fun drive but only part of it on the N2Read more

  • Green

    October 28, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

So I have mentioned all the burnt bits before but there are less of them next to the road here.....even though I am close to Castelo Branco which had a huge fire a few years back......and where it's not burnt it is really, really greenRead more

  • Trapped!

    October 28, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

I slipped and bumped and slid down to the praia fluvial because it boasted an open restaurant....what I didn't know when I took these pictures is that the handle on the inside of the gents toilets is broken off. So I yelled, thumped the door and finally in desperation kicked it open and broke the jam.....I didn't stop for lunch.Read more

  • Miradouro do Penedo Furado

    October 28, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

A prime example of 'lost' I had turned when Google said 'Turn' and had spent the last 15 km convinced I was not on the N2 because Google now showed it on the other side of this spectacular valley.....I stopped and took these stops then immediately passed a milestone marked 360 km N2...Read more

  • Accident

    October 29, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

So back on the N2 I come round a corner and find a small car wrapped round a tree.......with a lady inside.....she was conscious, trapped and probably had both legs broken. I checked the car was diesel, gave her some water and then started to slow down the traffic whilst another guy phoned the emergency services....they arrived in about 15 minutes....remembered yellow vest so that was good but completely forgot and lost emergency flashing light thing which was not so good.....Lunch at this place to recoverRead more
