    Almost home!!

    8. april 2018, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 22 °C

Well. Max's mum kept calling yesterday worrying about us going down dorrigo mountain in the dark, she ran a fair bit checking where we were to make sure we were still alive. She's usually like that 😂.
We were about 3 and a half hours from home coming through Uralla when I saw this group of 8 or so standing on a corner jumping up and down and looking like nutters. There was a car in front of us and I thought they were waving etc at it, all of a sudden Juls jumped out onto the road and we realised it was Max's parents and his sisters family waiting to surprise us!
We all stayed at the caravan park in Uralla last night and went to the pub for dinner - what a luxury!! My tummy was off this morning though, not used to fancy pub dinners anymore 😂. The kids were so excited.
We're now heading to Dorrigo and making our way home with Fred and Alby in the back. Can't wait to get home!

  • Homeward bound

    6. april 2018, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 12 °C

Hi everyone! So we've been on the road for 5 days now, heading east ( aka home!!).
Have had pretty much no reception so not sure if this will come through before we get home - it's Friday evening now.
So we crossed the Nullarbor AGAIN, have driven across S.A and are currently situated in outback NSW. There's goats, emu's, roo's, wedge tail eagles and seagulls of the outback ( crows ) everywhere. I've never seen so much roadkill, it just stinks as your driving along of rotting emu and Roos - I had hold of a plastic bag and was dry reaching all day - yuuuuk.
We stopped at Broken Hill today and had good ol Macca's for lunch. The kids deserve it, they are being so good and we've been driving around 700kms a day! We've been sleeping at rest stops and usually there's at least 1 other van there so we've felt ok about stopping there.
It's pretty hot right now and it's almost dark, someone said tomorrow will be 37 somewhere out here - we're hoping to be home either tomorrow night or Sunday.
I picked up a cold from Alby which sucks but everyone else has had it so it was going to happen! First time in 5 months that we've been sick, since starting preschool that's a record!
Can't wait to see everyone and hopefully weasel my way into cuddles from my nieces and nephews!
No photos as I've let the boys take up all the storage taking pics of each other....

  • Margaret River

    1. april 2018, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

    Hello! Happy Easter!
Sorry I haven't put anything on here for so long....we've were camped out in a national park with no reception for 10 days and now we're at a 'working farm' campground and there's no reception here either.
To be honest we haven't really enjoyed Margaret River - the campground was shit and so far from anything - full of mozzies and black sand so the kids were filthy as was the van and we didn't have access to a shower so each night I'd try and give them a birdy bath but everyone was still filthy...Alby got worms for the 6th time since we've been away, I've been doing everything I can and making sure he washed his hands before he eats, wash everything ( which sucks when I've just washed everything amd then have to re-wash at $4 a load - but it's a viscous cycle.

There was beached whales (150) and we saw a few of them, that was so sad. There were shark bike out of some of them too.

So, we managed to beg enough to stay at the 'farm stay' as everything on the south west coast get completely booked out over easter long weekend, I called all over trying to find somewhere to stay and we were panicking as there was literally nothing at all anywhere! Max had a friend who lived here for 10 months so we dropped his name and they relented and gave us a spot. It's completely packed with families, the kids are all in their groups and decide whether they like Mav or not depending on their mood, he's been in tears a few times as they tell him to go away, your not in our gang anymore etc, one kid stood over Alby the other night and made him hand over his glow stick, poor Alby was inconsolable and we tracked down the little shit and made him give it back! So as you can see, I'm hating all the kids now - Max says it's my hormones which I agree with but I can't get our of this grumpy funk 😂
To top it off, they have heaps of guinea pigs here - Max was with Alby yesterday morning cuddling a cute fluffy one when it started to slip off his lap....he gently went to scoop it up and the bugger attacked him, sinking its beaver like teeth into his finger. He bolted back to the van with his hand covered in blood, screaming his head off. We ended having to take him to hospital to get it cleaned and dressed and he's now on antibiotics. Luckily they get a tetanus vaccination with their immunisations. Safe to say we haven't been back to the guinea pigs.
We were asked to donate Easter eggs to their annual egg hunt this morning, all the big kids had massive baskets and their joggers on ready to crush the little kids. I was dreading it thinking our boys would be trampled and find nothing but they separated the big kids from the younger ones and at the end, all the found eggs were put in a massive tub and shared equally between the kids ( max pocketed some just in case they missed out ). The boys loved it!

I've been feeling nauseous and super tired this whole time so I'm not the best company at the moment, hence my quite negative writing 😬, also I'm just really ready to come home. We've been doing huge hours in the car, the kids have peaked and Max admitted he has too. If we go home around the top end, it'll be around 90 hours of driving but if we go home from here it's half that time.
We've decided to start heading home from here. It'll take a few weeks but we're very ready to go. Not looking forward to spending all that time in the car but it's worth it!

  • Esperance W.A

    13. marts 2018, Australien ⋅ 🌙 21 °C

We made it after 2 and a bit days driving! Spent the night in a caravan park in Esperance our first night, we were desperate for hot showers and washing machines to was our sweaty linen and clothes!
Made our way to Cape Le Grande national park ( I think that's what it's called ) and luckily found a spot at Lucky Bay ( pun intended ). It's within the national park and its beautiful, windy as anything but the sand is like cornflour and the water is amazing! Staying a few nights here.

  • On the move

    10. marts 2018, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Max rode his bike to the mechanics yesterday arvo and they finished the car around 7pm. The poor mechanic was stressing to finish it for us and Max helped him and so we are no longer stuck in Streaky Bay! We went for dinner at Max's friend Heath's place last night. He went fishing earlier in the day and caught dinner for us ( Heath not Max ). We met his wife Eliza and 18 month old son Ziggy - the boys were all over him.
We are currently traveling on the Nullarbor, we'll reach the border tonight and camp just before it as we need to eat up some fruit before quarantine.
It's another hot day, the boys have the spray bottles and are keeping themselves cool. We left around 10:30 this morning and it's now 7:30pm! A big day of driving, we got the kids some cheap tablets so they could watch movies in the car, Alby only lasts 5 minutes then he's 'booooorrred'. 2 more days like this before we are In Esperance...

  • Its so so hot

    9. marts 2018, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 27 °C

O.M.G... its SO hot, 36 degrees yesterday, today and tomorrow. We still don't have the car and we can't swim out front of caravan park until late this afternoon ( super low tide ) 😭 I've had the worst headache for the past few days - the flies and mozzies are awful wahhhhh I know I shouldn't be whinging but I aaammmm. Have to ride to the skatepark to give the kids some exercise but I feel like I might vomit now we're here.Læs mere

  • Car issues

    3. marts 2018, Australien ⋅ 🌫 0 °C

We went out to see Australias only mainland sea lion colony which was amazing! On the way back we pulled over and I walked out to the middle of a salt late and found this memorial for a farmer that was killed by natives in 1850, quite eerie but cool!
It looks like we are stuck in Streaky Bay until at least Wednesday now as Max's car is leaking diesel and it's gotta go to the mechanics on Tuesday. We couldn't stay on our caravan spot as someone has booked our particular site 😳 so we've moved 2 spots over, had to take down annex, hook car up etc and move this morning but we think this is a better spot anyway!

  • Ellistan and Streaky Bay

    1. marts 2018, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

We did a massive day in the car (11 hours!!!) and went through the 'halfway across Australia' point and then spent 2 nights at a $10 ( honestly box) a night camp on the beach. A farmer came down with his horses in the mornings and we watched them galloping up the beach, he obviously saw Mav desperate to pat them and came down one afternoon and let the boys have a ride on the beach!
We've now been in streaky bay for a few nights, leaving Saturday for Ceduna. It was 38 degrees the other day...we found a secret beach and went skinny dipping in the middle of the day!
Currently at the skate park with the boys as max has gone surfing all day. Mav's schoolwork has gone missing again 🤦🏼‍♀️

  • Adelaide

    24. februar 2018, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We just spent 2 nights at a caravan park in Adelaide, right on the beach - the forecast was for 38 degrees yesterday so we thought it best to be close to water! It was 31 degrees at 8am yesterday and we had our hottest night in the van the night before, we think it was around 30 degrees all night... we have no fans 😬.
Before that we spent 3 nights in Robe, and a friend from Coffs called me and said they are traveling Aust too - they were in Robe too!! We never see each other or follow each other on social media, she just remembered me saying we were going in November. We spent the afternoon at their caravan park, drinking beer ( I AM on a beer budget 😭) and her husband cooked fresh caught whiting and cray fish for dinner ( he caught it that day and they told him he'd get $200 at the fish market for the cray- I didn't eat the cray, whiting was enough!)
Heading to Port Augusta and hopefully get past it today, the bloody school work was meant to be there but it's not so I'll have to ring around trying to find it again- the schoolwork is hard, there's a lot to get through and Mav mostly whinges the whole time 😬
Picture is from yesterday, we had to have a cold shower a few times yesterday as we were melting and the sand was scorching hot!

  • Great Ocean Road

    17. februar 2018, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Have spent the last 2 nights in caravan parks along the great ocean road as the surf along it was very good. Last night we had a koala in the tree above our caravan (this caravan park had a lot of koalas around - it was amazing) and the kids had birds all over them-they loved it.
Went to the 12 Apostles today, there were about 1000 people there, it was hectic... Chinese new year and its mostly Chinese people everywhere 😬
We've made it to Warrnambool ( where Oddball was filmed- the penguins on middle island that have the dogs protecting them from the foxes). We walked along the jetty this afternoon and there was a resident seal just hanging around'. Have stopped at the showground for the night.

  • Queenscliffe

    14. februar 2018, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

We now know the reason why Max's mum booked us into this caravan park- they showed up early the first morning here and surprised us! We've spent the last 4 days with them ( the kids sleeping in their caravan so we've been having a mini break!) and we'll go our seperate ways tomorrow...
Max has had a few surfs at Bell's beach and we went into Torquay and collected Mav's schoolwork so we've been doing that too.
We're not 100% sure where we'll go tomorrow.

  • Back on the mainland!

    10. februar 2018, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We were on our way to Devonport yesterday and saw there was space on the ferry last night so we ended up coming back over to the mainland and arrived in Melbourne this morning.
Juls called and said she'd surprise booked us into a caravan park (which she had to change as she didn't know we were coming over earlier) and we've just arrived in Queenscliffe and set up the van for 2 nights. ( a bit out of the way from where we wanted to get to but it was a lovely gesture so here we are). We're past Geelong and in the harbour so we can see boats coming and going. It's raining right now so we've put a movie on for the kids and are enjoying so peaceful instagram scrolling whilst we can.Læs mere

  • Bay of Fires

    6. februar 2018, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 20 °C

It's really beautiful here - but Max and I both agree that Wilsons Promontory in VIC and Adventure Bay on Bruny Island is much nicer! I guess it's a tourist thing... free camping so it's absolutely packed at the campgrounds and the main beach is pretty dangerous ( full of rips ) but there's a little nook that is lovely, we'll probably spend 2 nights here and it's meant to be raining Thursday and Friday so we'll go before then.Læs mere

    30. januar 2018, Australien ⋅ 🌙 10 °C

Beautiful evening, much cooler today and rainy. Saturday was 38 degrees! It was a stinker, I guess it was a little taste of what you guys have been getting. Staying until Saturday so Max can work a few extra days and hopefully Mav's missing school work shows up somewhere 👍🏽Læs mere

  • Still here!

    27. januar 2018, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Still in Bruny, it's so beautiful BUT we are ready to leave Tassie...we've still got to see the bay of fires first and then we'll hop on the ferry back to the mainland - depending on when Max finishes up work, we'll probably bring our ferry trip forward a week. We are hoping he'll be able to finish up Thursday so we can get to Hobart Friday morning, get Mav's schoolwork and head up the coast to Bicheno for a night before heading to the Bay of Fires.
Yesterday we saw an Echidna waddling past our caravan, a big tiger snake in a log near the water, and Mav and Alby both caught flathead out the front of where we're staying!
Apparently the tiger snakes here don't get the poison in straight away, they've got to make a wound first then wait for the poison to drip into the wound from the back of their throat! (normally poison drips off their fangs) 😵.
We also had a scorpion on our mat in front of the caravan which was scary - also the jack jumper ants, they are in the top 5 deadliest ants list or something, they can kill! There are a lot around 😩.
Anywho, looking forward to getting on the ferry again. We are thinking we will head to Torquay or around there where there will hopefully be surf ( poor Max hasn't had good surf since we left home), then Max's parents are going to a vintage caravan show in Vic and we will catch up with them before heading along the great ocean road towards streaky bay. We haven't decided if we'll go to the bottom of W.A or head up the guts and go to Uluru...
    Missing you all!
Happy birthday for tomorrow Sarah! Xxxx

  • Port Arthur and the Coal Mines

    19. januar 2018, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

The last week we've few nights we've been staying at white beach caravan park, a great little spot with a lovely white sand beach and only 10kms out of Port Arthur.
We went to Port Arthur yesterday and it was pretty amazing ( really sad too) we went to the ruins of the broad arrow cafe, which is within the grounds, where the massacre took place and there is a memorial there which was really sad. Included in the entry fee is a boat ride out to see the 'Isle of the Dead' island which is a tiny island that around 1000 convicts were buried on ( also priests and high class people who worked within the jail and their families ) they we buried up on a hill whilst the convicts were buried below them. Also takes you out to another island nearby which was the boys jail. Pretty heavy stuff! We were there for 5 hours and didn't get to everything.
Today we went to the historic coal mines - in a different place but convicts were jailed there too, not touristy like post Arthur, but so interesting, the cells under ground looked awful - it was a bit creepy - we were the only ones there!
Went to the remarkable cave too, beautiful spot, the pics don't do it justice at all. It's a huge cave but looks small in the pictures!
Max has work on Bruny Island that he picked up from one of the national parks fellas out there that he befriended so tomorrow we are going back for a few weeks. Miss you all! Xxx

    14. januar 2018, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Went into Hobart to the Museum, it was free and so good!! There was so much for the kids to look at and Max and I loved it too.
Afterwards we drove up Mount Wellington, it was soooo cold up there but obviously the view is amazing! We had a look around then had a beer/cider up there. Back at our camp spot for the night - the Lea scout campgrounds, up in the mountains. Max left the weetbix out last night and there were 2 possums having a massive fight over it under the annex.Læs mere

This afternoon, we organised the rescue of a King Penguin that had washed up on the beach and looked to be injured. It's raining and cold at the moment but we've had mostly beautiful weather. • Bruny Island

    1. januar 2018, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

We caught the ferry over yesterday and spent the day at Bruny. It's only a 30 min ferry ride.
We had a great day, it wasn't too cold!
We spotted an albino Echidna on the side of the road - amazing!!!
Max got a surf finally ( Tracey and the Ingram kids were with us at that stage and we hung at the creek whilst the boys took 45 each way to get to the surf 😅🤦🏼‍♀️) and then we headed to adventure bay, white sand beach and turquoise water with the bush reaching right to the water. I had a swim and it was very fresh 😬 but refreshing 😜.
Wanted to spend New Year's Day over there today but it's rainy and cold so hopefully we'll go again soon when the weather is clear.
