    Fly Drive to Hervey Bay

    Met Faye and Barbara for flight out of Melbourne to Maroochydore. Found lovely spot just outside airport to have lunch. Picked up rental car. Guy at counter called us sisters. Two and a half hour drive got us into Hervey Bay just after 5pm. Ten of us in total in a lovely rambling and spacious house.Leia mais

    Day 1 Whales

    Up early for 7am departure. 20 people aboard our boat. Well feed and heaps of whales coming up close. At one stage has 8 circling the boat. When they were close by it was either too choppy or they were flapping around too much. Pretty amazing antics and we had a whale behaviour specialist in board so very informative. Headed into shore 4pm. Was good to warm up and have a leisurely night.Leia mais

    Day 2 Whales

    Much calmer and warmer today but not as many whales. Did see lots of breaching and tail slapping and dolphins. Just before we were about to head back in had amazing close encounters including a couple of our group getting in with 2 whales just happy to lie there belly up and reach out for a touch. Water so clear could really feel like they were looking at us.Leia mais

    Early morning walk on beach before finishing our retreat, packing up and saying good byes to 6 of the group. Four of us headed off for the 30 minute trip to our Air BnB at Toogoom. Getting our luggage in hire car took a bit of sorting. Right on beachfront in a lovely setting. Both restaurants In Toogoom closed at 3pm and no supermarket so headed back into Hervey Bay for food shopping and the marina for Sunset dinner.Leia mais

    Whale story hits news

    After early morning walk got message to go back into Hervey Bay for channel 7 news interview. Our story got on the 6pm news and footage on the channel 7 Facebook site. Found a lovely tea house on way back. Got some chill out time along beach in afternoon.Leia mais

    Full day on the Island. Bus was over booked so 4 of us in our own vehicle with driver. So much variety.
    K’gari local indigenous word for paradise. Just in process of officially change the name.

    Last full day in paradise

    Up for another early morning walk on the beach. Off to a place that makes Celtic harps with light weight material. Glenda has a wooden one but heard about these. Got a lovely demo then lunch at Arkarra lagoon and leisurely afternoon stroll and sit on the beach. Lovely pink sunset.Leia mais

    Back in Melbourne

    Delayed flight got us in about 35 minutes late. Thanks Andrew and Linda for pick up. Battling peak hour traffic and a shop for some basic groceries meant dark by the time I got home.
    Very thankful for efficient central heating. Still processing what an awesome trip it was, felt like we were in a time bubble and were away for ever.
    Overnight temperature was Melbourne’s coldest.    Leia mais
