    This afternoon we took a short bus ride to Benedictine Abbey/Monastery/Church. It is over 900 years old. Some interesting facts about the Abby which is huge:
    Only 24 monks in residence now
    200 staff needed to keep it clean (1,365 windows)
    Eleven libraries holding over 100,000 books in 15 languages on all subjects
    The most magnificent Baroque church in the world (pictures not allowed inside)
    900 students attend high school there

  • Our Riverboat

    Our riverboat is the Adgio - we have two groups on board - we are the red group & the other one is the blue group about 40 in each group with a Program Director for each. After dinner they each gave a slide presentation of their lives. The max guests the boat holds is 160 so we are less but it’s still a big group for us.     After a delicious dinner of salmon, vegetables & potatoes the crew paraded around the dining hall with sparklers, we all sang the Star Spangled Banner & then had a yummy dessert

    We went up to the upper deck to watch the sunset. Every night they turn down the bed & put a chocolate on the pillow along with a map of the city we will be visiting the next day. Chris & I talked to some people on the tour from Minnesota & Wisconsin tonight

    This morning we went on a walking tour with a local guide. We walked across the stone bridge which took 12 years to build—town was not bombed during WWII so buildings are over 900 years old. This afternoon a professor from the university spoke about the differences between the German & US public school systems—too many to elaborate
    After dinner a dance group in traditional costumes performed in our lounge area.

    Late afternoon out tour leader lectured above the Rhine-Main-Danube canal & discussed the history of building the locks. Tonight we went to the upper deck & viewed the sunset & we reached the highest lock around 9:15pm

  • Nuremberg

    Today we went on a tour of Nuremberg with a local guide. We went by the ruins of a stadium where Hitler held his rallies. We went to the building where the Nuremberg trials were held but only saw a model of the courtroom since the actual courtroom is still in use. This afternoon a local historian spoke to us about the relationship between Russia & Germany throughout history.Read more

    This morning a walking tour of Bamburg which was not bombed during WWII. It is a World Heritage City which means they cannot change or add any structures. They can repair them though. Every church we have seen has a scaffolding around it.Read more

    This afternoon the pastry chefs demonstrated how to make apple strudel
    We were invited to the Inner Circle reception-to be in the inner circle you have to have taken 3 trips. We had champagne & the Captain & hospitality supervisor thanked us. And another artistic dessert!Read more

    One hour bus ride to Rothsburg - ancient city surrounded by a wall The town is famous for having lots of stores that sell Christmas ornaments & decorations. Also for St Jacobs church that has the blood of Christ according to the Catholic Church. The last picture is a barred window where cloistered nuns gave food to the poor. Germans are very proud of their beer & sausages & weinerschnitzel

    This morning we had an expert on board that demonstrated his craft of glass blowing I bought a beautiful bud vase for only $18. We have lost a few hours on our schedule because one propeller broke but we will soon be in Werthem & the Captain has arranged for repair or replacement when we go on our city tour
    Also yesterday a sweet German lady stopped me as we were walking & wanted so much to talk to me but only spoke German so I asked her if Chris could take her picture with me

    Another walking tour today this is a very small city- our tour leader pointed out a memorial to the towns Jewish ancestors who died during WWII- then another delicious dessert at lunch - but I am walking 10,000 steps a day
    In the afternoon we went to a home hosted coffee/dessert. Our host, Doris, is in the back row behind me. She was extremely friendly & easy to talk to — she has hosted these get togethers for Grand Circle cruise lines for 18 years. Pictured is Jorge coy pond in her backyard. Tonight the crew will speak to our group about their native countries. They are all young & very polite & competent

    Heidelberg University was founded in 1196–the oldest in Europe - we went to a castle that is named one of the 10 best places to see in Europe & a walking tour of the city. A picture of some others on the tour at lunch. The man at the far right & woman at the far left are from Santa Clarita. Roger works at Holy Cross Hospital & Theresa teaches for the Castaic school district (small world).Read more

  • Castles on the Reine

    So far we have sailed on the Danube & Main Rivers & we are now on the Reine headed for Koblenz, Germany. All along the rivers are white swans & their babies. Soon we will be passing an area where there are many castles along the river. It is a World Heritage Site.

    Tour of the city. The main attraction is the Catholic Church which is third tallest in the world called Dom. We even had a special visit from the Pope! In front of the church a young artist painting flags of the world & promoting peace (love it)
