Simpson Desert

We were rewarded for getting up on a bitterly cold and windy morning with a stunning sunrise over Lake Eyre, a treasured moment in this remote idyllic setting. Before heading to our destination of the day, William Creek, we took a diversion to some must see nearby large ruins. Strangeways was first a pastoral settlement due to the many mound springs and later became a repeater telegraph station (on the telegraph line between Adelaide and Darwin and was the first means of communication to the rest of the world). We also visited the Beresford siding ruins where we had a picnic lunch on the side of the dam. We returned to our “hotel” in William Creek. Anthony was chuffed to stay in an Ausco donga. It was good to have a hot shower and catch up on our washing. It was our final night together and we celebrated in style at the pub and ate a delicious local favourite, a goat curry, washed down with some good red wine.
