This was painted by a female prisoner, Grace Plunkett nee Gifford. She was married to Joseph Plunkett who was a signatory to the Declaration of Independence. They got married in the prison chapel where he was executed 7hrs later by firing squad. She ended up inprisoned for continuing his work.

The cross shows where 6 of the 7 men stood to face the firing squad. Another was tied to a chair as he was incapable of standing after being mortally wounded. They wanted to ensure he died by their hand, not on his own.
