    Day 10

    Another rainy day, but luckily we were again on a private tour and got to choose where to go. We were picked up by our tour guide, Kevin, and driven to Osaka to explore the city. We began at Osaka Castle, which was already crowded despite the rain, and was absolutely beautiful. To follow that, we decided to spend some time indoors at the Osaka Municipal Housing Museum, which went through the history of housing in the area and included miniature AND a lifesize recreation of a neighborhood from the Edo Period. Finally, we stopped at a beautiful shrine on the south side of the city before heading back to our hotel to get out of the rain.Meer informatie

    Day 11

    Got up bright and early to visit Hiroshima and Miyajima Island. We arrived at our meeting point at 7:15 or so, and then were taken to another Shikansen - it’s honestly amazing that we can travel so far in only an hour and a half! At around 9 we arrived in Hiroshima and made our way to Miyajima Island.

    The island was tiny and had almost as many deer as people! We got very lucky with the weather and were able to explore the town a bit and see the floating Torii Gates and even pet a deer!

    After a couple hours we drove back into town to visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and Museum. It was an incredibly sobering experience to walk through the area where the bomb had detonated, and it was amazing to see the beautiful park that had been built on those ashes. It was an emotionally exhausting experience, but it’s something I think everyone should see - especially during our current political situation.    Meer informatie

    Day 12

    We took advantage of the excellent weather on our last day in Kyoto to do a bus tour around the city. Ever time we go somewhere here I am reminded of how many temples and shrines have been built here. And not just small ones - huge temples shrines can be found on nearly every city block! A tour guide told us that there are over 2,000 shrines and temples throughout the city!

    Once the tour was completed, we headed to Kyoto Station to visit Don Quixote and do some souvenir shopping. I had nearly forgotten what an experience this store is, with literally an aisle for anything you can think of - merch, clothes, food, more. And, of course, plenty of sections specifically aimed at tourists, which we definitely took advantage of. I’m still surprised we managed to fit everything in our suitcases!    Meer informatie

    Day 13

    We woke up bright and early today so we could visit Nijo Castle across from our hotel before checking out, only to discover that it was SNOWING! And with a cold and 20 hours in airports ahead of us, no one was up for that. So, we slept in a bit, checked out at noon, and then Mom and Richard went to explore the castle for about an hour since the weather had cleared up.

    Heyo! Richard’s back at the digital typewriter bbyyy! The castle had a moat within a moat (yo dawg) and some beautiful gardens with yellow grass and ponds and well bonsaied trees. That dude knew how to build a sweet crib. We just never found out: who is that dude?    Meer informatie
