  • Bye bye Athens

    8 lutego 2022, Grecja ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Winter break is over and we can finally start cycling again!! Just when we left Crete, a huge snow storm hit Athens. Seems like winter didn’t want to leave so quickly 😅
With a little help of the Greek railways we arrived In Thessaloniki and will now start cycling in the direction of Istanbul! Czytaj więcej

  • Last days in Greece

    10 lutego 2022, Grecja ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

How good it feels to be in the saddle again… or how painful it feels. 😅 We can’t believe that we will soon depart from the Mediterranean ocean. It has never been very far from our sides throughout our journey since Delta del Po. As currently all ferries between Turkey and Greece are cancelled, all cyclists are forced to cross over to Turkey on this narrow strip of land towards Istanbul. We’ve met so many cyclists! Most notably, Jean-Claude who is a 66 year old cyclist, and has been cycling for 30 years for 9 months per year!! Czytaj więcej

  • On the way to Ankara

    25 lutego 2022, Turcja ⋅ 🌧 3 °C

After a rainy cycling day we were rewarded with a natural hot spring. They are abundant here. Then we headed for the mountains with lovely old Ottoman cities. And we were definitely glad that we added some winter boots to our equipment. But luckily we found an old container which gave us some shelter. Czytaj więcej

  • Encounter with the shepherd

    1 marca 2022, Turcja ⋅ ☁️ 7 °C

While looking for a sleeping place we accidentally ran into a herd of sheep with their shepherd. Without any common language he immediately invited us to set up our tent in his shelter and to have dinner with his family. What kindness! Thank you so much! Czytaj więcej

  • Chasing the sun!

    4 marca 2022, Turcja ⋅ ⛅ -2 °C

In Ankara we finally got our Iranian Visas! Though we enjoyed our ride through central Anatolia we were longing for some warmer days. Therefore we listened to some good advice and we hopped on a bus taking us to the southeastern coast of Turkey, Adana! What a difference it is to cycle with 12 degrees Celsius compared to 0 degrees. Eastern Anatolia awaits! Czytaj więcej

  • We cant escape the snow

    11 marca 2022, Turcja ⋅ ⛅ 1 °C

Somehow we cannot fully escape the snow. In the Mountains we were hit again with snowstorms. Luckily, Mehmet and his family found us outside of their village and invited us to a lovely dinner, a typical Turkish breakfast and a warm bed!! We are grateful for all the hospitality we encountered in Turkey ♥️ the next night an abandoned house gave us shelter during minus degrees. Hallelujah! Czytaj więcej

  • Salinurfa

    16 marca 2022, Turcja ⋅ ☀️ 9 °C

On our way to Salinurfa we got invited for a chai from Ibrahim. Even though we could just communicate with our ✋ and 🦶 and a little help from google translate… we were able to laugh so much together. When arriving in Salinurfa, we visited a beautiful mosque and Abrahams cave, the place in which apparently Abraham was born. Czytaj więcej

  • Mardin

    22 marca 2022, Turcja ⋅ ⛅ 9 °C

We once again encountered snow… But unlike most of the 🚗 with summer tires, we were able to pedal our way through the snow up to Mardin, a picturesque old city with narrow alleys and many stairs…definitely not bike friendly.
As the weather got better, we cycled to a beautiful monastery, where we bought a nice bottle of red wine and waited in the sun with a glas in the hand for the monastery to open.

  • Cycling into Iran

    25 marca 2022, Turcja ⋅ ☁️ 0 °C

Quite some eventful last days in Turkey. First we discovered that due to Iranian New Year the border city of Van was quite busy. Then we forgot our passports at the hotel in Van 😅 only 20 km later we discovered our loss, luckily the next police checkpoint was not far away. The police called the hotel and 20 minutes and two chais later our passports were delivered by taxi for free 🥰 later on we met a lovely french couple also biking to Iran. It was great to spend the next couple of days camping and cycling with them, even under some very harsh conditions 🥶…minus 10 degrees…. Czytaj więcej

  • Thank you Farah!

    5 kwietnia 2022, Iran ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

We again were welcomed with open arms by our warmshowers host Farah in Zanjan! We had the pleasure to sleep beside her canary birds in her lovely apartment. Farah used to be a professional tour guide and took us on a tour through the historical bazaar of Zanjan. So much history lies in the bazaars of Iran. We were also lucky to be there for „Tuesday without Cars“. It’s a nationwide movement to promote cycling in Iran. Farah has been participating in it regularly since it’s start. And on our last evening we saw wonderful Zanjan from the top of the mountains… (though we were lucky enough to be driven up there) 😉 Czytaj więcej

  • Tehran!

    7 kwietnia 2022, Iran ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

We made it to Tehran!! Wohoo!! Though we did have the help of a train from Zanjan to the Capital seeing how we did not want to relive the same experience as in Istanbul of driving into a mega city. Luckily Farah put all her negation skills to use so that we could take our bicycles into the train. Thank you Farah! Czytaj więcej

  • The holy city of Ghom

    11 kwietnia 2022, Iran ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Ghom is one of the holiest city of Iran. Here the Supreme Leader lives here and a shrine of Imam Reza‘s sister Fatemeh was built here. As a foreigner you are accompanied by an English speaking guide and women have to wear a full body chodar. Later on in the evening, on not to holy grounds we camped close to the rails… not recommended if you have a light sleep. 😅 Czytaj więcej

  • Desert city Kashan

    13 kwietnia 2022, Iran ⋅ ⛅ 32 °C

In the desert city of Kashan we discovered the beautiful and intelligent ancient architecture of the desert. Centuries before the air condition they built wind catchers that would catch the air, cool it and distribute into the homes. Underground cities were built to protect against enemies and cisterns were kept underground as well to keep water cold… and again we were invited for tea and sweets. 🥰 Czytaj więcej

  • No (wo)man’s land

    18 kwietnia 2022, Iran ⋅ ☀️ 16 °C

We realized in Isfahan that we only had 3 days to cross the desert in order to prolong our visa on time in Yazd due to public holidays unknown to us 😅 Thus, we set out to pedal hard through the desert. However, we were stopped by the police already on our way out of Isfahan because passing by a “sensitive” factory. The police station turned out to be super comfortable though, we were given sweets and drinks. On our second day, while looking for a camping spot, Mohammed found us and immediately invited us to his house where we met his lovely family. Thank you Mohammed! Czytaj więcej
