    Faro

    April 24, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

A historic city on the Algarve, Faro was the last Moorish stronghold in Portugal. Walking the sun bleached cobbled streets you see the hustle and bustle of a thousand tourists, with locals tending to their every need. The architecture is reminiscent of a lot of Spanish cities that had once been occupied by the Moors. A mix of Moorish, Spanish and Roman features; the statues of local saints hidden in high places to bless the area. The key standout for me is the hundreds of stork nests precariously perched on pretty much every gable end, tower or post. A vibrant town with very little to actually do other than sit, drink coffee, and observe.Read more

    April 26, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Portugals capital sits at the mouth of the longest river on the Iberian peninsula. It’s a very colourful and vibrant place with lovely coffee booths dotted around. A nice place to explore on foot, although it’s quite hilly. It feels very safe and it has some incredible architecture. It’s quite sprawling so I probably didn’t do it justice today, but I think I saw everything I needed to see.Read more

  • Porto

    April 29, 2024 in Portugal ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

MY GOD DOES THE RAIN STOP. A very rainy, very historic city. A labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets that all seem to loop you back to the same place. I think it would be worth visiting in the summer and when all the metro works have been completed!Read more

  • Salamanca

    May 1, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 8 °C

Absolutely the most magnificent city I have ever visited. Beautiful ancient corridors between colossal pink sandstone edifices. A collision of baroque, Romanesque, gothic & renaissance architecture that all merges together triumphantly. I can see why it’s called the cultural capital of Europe as it is truly the most European city I have visited. Shame about the weather!Read more

  • Segovia

    May 3, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☁️ 14 °C

The aqueduct cutting through the town was built by either the Romans or Satan, depending on who you believe, 2000 years ago. The remainder of the town was built around it and basically housed many of the dukes and royals of Spain from the 14th century until the 1800s. The cathedral was built in the 1600s but wasn’t furnished until hundreds of years later!Read more

  • Madrid

    May 4, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

A history of conquest, inquisition and war. Madrid is a maze of historic buildings, shopping centres and cafes. I can’t say it’s been my favourite city but it’s definitely interesting! Arguably too busy and rainy but, we move.Read more

  • Zaragoza

    May 7, 2024 in Spain ⋅ 🌬 16 °C

Two thousand years of history rolled up into a somewhat lacklustre city. The Basilica and Cathedral were very nice, as was the giant park. Good food and nice walks but definitely not as pretty or nice as some of the other cities!Read more

    May 9, 2024 in Spain ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

Boy do they love Gaudi here. The gridded city is full of hidden secrets, most of which I didn’t uncover. In fact, they are so well hidden I don’t really even know they exist. A nice night of flamenco followed by a paella cooking course and lots of sangria, not a bad way to spend a birthday!Read more

  • Figueres

    May 10, 2024 in Spain ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

The birthplace of Salvatore Dali, it’s a bit of an un noteworthy place. Sleepy squares around every bend, good coffee, fuet as far as the eye can see. A lovely place to relax for a day or two. The Dali museum was interesting as I only knew him as “melty clock man” but he was a completely insane and very prolific artist!Read more

  • Corfu old town

    May 13, 2024 in Greece ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

First greek town I’ve visited and it turns out it was basically completely owned by Italy for hundreds of years! Very Venetian architecture mixed with some French from Napoleonic times. Completely flattened by Germany in WW2 left it quite un-historic but a lovely place to meander and eat tzatziki and drink beer!Read more

    May 17, 2024 in Albania ⋅ ☁️ 25 °C

First time in Albania and I feel immediately transported back to Laos. It’s the poor man’s Greece on the coast. Not much to see in this town but nice view and an old abandoned monastery. Excited to move inland.Read more

  • Gjirokaster

    May 18, 2024 in Albania ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

“The stone city”; a town with stone roofs, an epic mountaintop fort, charming little streets and a hell of a lot of hills. We have been well and truly charmed by Albania now although their food leaves a lot to be desired! This town also has a Cold War era bunker under the castle that was built by the dictator in the 80s and is now collapsing (not ideal considering what a bunker is used to defend against…).Read more

  • Tirana

    May 20, 2024 in Albania ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Albanias capital city really puts the developing in developing nation. Completely under construction and very rough around the edges. There is some hidden gems and very beautiful parts to the city if you start to dig! People as a rule of thumb are very friendly and hospitable, food is very much ok but nothing to write home about, their Greek dishes are probably your best bet! Maybe one to visit in 5-10 years.Read more

    May 22, 2024 in North Macedonia ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

    May 25, 2024 in Albania ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Well the Montenegrins are not the most polite of people! Lovely little seaside town with good Venetian history, most of which was uncovered after a huge earthquake in the 70s. Good food and nice sights - people leave a lot to be desired.Read more

  • Dubrovnik

    May 31, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Dubrovnik is a stunningly beautiful city located on the Adriatic coast of Croatia. It's often referred to as the "Pearl of the Adriatic" due to its rich history, unique architecture, and breathtaking location. The city is surrounded by ancient walls and red-tiled roofs, which give it a distinctive, vibrant appearance. It was also very busy and quite expensive and rained most of the time we were there!Read more

  • Zagreb

    June 7, 2024 in Croatia ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Zagreb has a distinctively edgy, almost dystopian feel. Graffiti is everywhere, and you might find yourself exploring old WW2 bunkers. We visited the Nikola Tesla Museum and got immersed in the genius's life and inventions. Wandering through some lovely parks, we noticed they were surrounded by buildings that seemed either dilapidated or under repair, adding to the city's gritty, wartime atmosphere. Very hot but a nice place to end another stint of travel!Read more
