South East Asia

A continent of contrasts. Giant modern infrastructure projects and booming populations, yet you can still find the serene view of an untouched river where a fisherman chugs along on his self built boat. Read more

    January 7, 2024

Landed in Bangkok at six in the morning after a very sleepless ten hour flight. The flight itself was smooth & comfortable, but I couldn't get any sleep & the food was inedible. We sleepily made our way through the city in a bit of a daze & left our bags at the hotel. We had five hours until check-in so we went for a walk around the neighbouring park and found an office block with a nice food hall where we had some brunch. Its insanely hot here - I'm not sure I've packed well. After finally being able to check in, we slept the rest of the day.Read more

  • Rooftop pool, Cabbages, & Condoms

    January 10, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 28 °C

We had a lazy day today to recover from the sleep depravation. We sat & read our books & sunbathed by the rooftop pool. We decided to venture into the city for dinner and ended up at a famous restaurant called “Cabbages & Condoms” where we ate some delicious noodles & watched a traditional dance being performed. Having lazed all day we stayed out for a few drinks at the Red Light district and spent a healthy amount of time in various strip clubs playing a games of “ladyboy or lady”.Read more

  • Wat Pho

    January 11, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

We slept in all morning - its going to take some time to adjust. Ventured out in the heat to see a giant, 46m long, laying Buddha at Wat Pho. The complex where it resides was very beautiful but unbearably full of tourists (I can’t help but feel like we were adding to the problem). We met up with Millie and Nicole who have been travelling Asia for the last 3 months & had a lovely Taiwanese meal and some drinks at a rooftop bar. What a lovely couple.Read more

  • Chinatown & Wot Arun

    January 12, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 33 °C

Had to go to the doctors this morning to get antibiotics for a spot that got infected on my shoulder - setting us back £80. Not the end of the world but annoying nonetheless. Went to Bangkoks infamous Chinatown market which was up there with the most disgusting places I've ever been. Took a ferry over to Wot Arun and then slowly made our way back in the direction of our hotel.Read more

  • Boat along the Chao Phraya

    January 13, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 33 °C

Our last day in Bangkok and instead of lugging our bags around we decided to go on a boat tour where we could sit and relax. It turns out that, unlike our British rivers, the Chao Phraya is super choppy, busy & very polluted. Got to see a 64m tall Buddha and fed some fish at the tour guides childhood temple. The river tour took longer than anticipated so we then had to rush to the airport to get our flight to South Thailand.Read more

  • Bus & ferry

    January 14, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 28 °C

Had some light breakfast before getting a bus to the port and a ferry to the island of Koh Samui. It was a very warm day but the sea breeze was cooling enough for us to sit on the top deck of the ferry to take in the views. We arrived at our hotel and immediately got in the sea which was full of jellyfish larvae! Lovely beach and pleasantly warm water but the constant little tiny stings are quite unnerving. Lovely dinner at a local bar and finished the night at a Krishna sing along at a Russian hotel.Read more

  • Lazy beach day

    January 15, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

We decided that we didnt care much for moving today given the flight, bus and ferry the previous day. We spent the day reading and hanging out by the water. It was a good day to try and rest my shoulder whilst the antibiotics kicked in. Lucy wanted to give the hotels kayak a spin, I disagreed.Read more

  • Temples of Koh Samui

    January 16, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

We thought we'd do what we were supposed to in Asia & hired a moped today. We drove the entire perimeter of the island exploring all the view points and temples. Somehow we completely missed the famous mummified monk but looking at pictures online I don think we missed much. The giant statues and temples were very interesting; mopeding was also interesting, but in a very different way.Read more

  • Wat Tham Suea - Krabi

    January 18, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 32 °C

Boarded an early ferry back to the mainland & then rode a bus over to Krabi. After our success on Koh Samui, we decided to rent a moped again to visit the mountain top viewpoint - 1260 steps and 300m of elevation in 30 degree heat, sweaty business. We met some cheeky monkeys which took to me, or at least to my things so kept trying to pickpocket me. whilst sat at dinner the military turned up and hovered over us making for a tense meal.Read more

  • Kohs (Poh Da Nai, Moh, Thap & Da Nok)

    January 19, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

We booked an island hopping tour today. Visited four different islands and got out and swam, snorkelled & walked on all of them. Got fed some good traditional Thai lunch and saw some tropical fish. Great day out - some of the vistas were like looking at a scene in Avatar! Feeling slightly sun stroked now. Went out for dinner and I accidentally ate a Thai Chilli whole. I think I’m still on fire now!Read more

  • Koh Lanta

    January 20, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 29 °C

Ferry from Krabi to Koh Lanta took an hour and a half longer than it was supposed to. The ferry looked like a relic from the 60s and was about as comfortable as you’d imagine. Arrived on Koh Lanta very sweaty and fed up only to be accosted by a hundred tuk-tuk drivers. Watched the sunset and then walked along the beach after dinner. Managed to catch two fire shows followed by some kids learning how to use the fire show equipment which was hilarious.Read more

  • Old town

    January 21, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

Bit bored of going from beach to beach only to find more beach now. Because of this we just sat in a nice spot and swam and read our books until late afternoon. I found and played with a praying mantis for a little too long - he decided I wasn’t food, flew into my face, and disappeared. Got a taxi to our next hotel. Had a wander around Lanta Old Town perusing all the hilarious little shops.Read more

  • Long walks and sea gypsies

    January 22, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 30 °C

This town was founded by sea gypsies and it shows. There is also a large Chinese influence and many, many cats. We went for a long walk which in the heat might as well have been a marathon. Nice squid dinner and some street food pudding; roti is a little too delicious, probably need to avoid it.Read more

  • Chiang Mai and its Wats

    January 24, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 23 °C

Walked 20km around Chiang Mai today. For ease of viewing here is a list of temples we visited: Wat Muen Ngoen Kong, Wat Phra Singh Woramahawihan, Wat Prasat, Wat Lok Moli, Wat Chiang Man, Wat Phantao & Wat Chedi Luang. A whole lot of Buddha! Got to sit and chat to a Buddhist monk for half an hour. Went out for dinner, listened to some live music and ended the day with a Thai Massage which was more fight than massage.Read more

  • Ow, my legs

    January 25, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Walked the Monks Trail today; a 10km hike with a whole bunch of elevation change. It walked us past a beautiful meditation retreat & a large temple. Very hot going and a tough hike. Legs are worse for wear now.Read more

  • Your unemployed friend on a Tuesday

    January 26, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Got in the back of a pickup truck at eight thirty to be driven to an undisclosed location, an hour and a half into the jungle. We appeared in a clearing that looked like elephant heaven. Spent the day feeding, walking with, swimming with and mudding elephants. Another bucket list item ticked off! They were surprisingly sneaky and gentle for such a giant animal; I felt like I was constantly about to be trampled though. Ended the day listening to some live music and eating curry.Read more

  • Chiang Rai

    January 28, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Grotty 4 hour bus ride to China Rai with little to no aircon (or doors). Got rained on a few times exploring the town and had dinner at a night market which is always eventful.

  • Temple trekkers

    January 29, 2024 in Thailand ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Hey, guess what. More temples is what. White blue and black. All the colours of the rainbow (if you have a specific kind of colour blindness thatn only allows you to see blue, white & black). White was impressive but very touristy, blue was a bit tacky & black was a museum dedicated to the macabre. Also saw a 90m lady statue. I think she was the god of peace? Good views from the top but a bit modern to be super interesting. I have to say, I’m a bit bored of temples this week.Read more

  • Goodbye Thailand, hello Laos

    January 31, 2024 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We left Thailand today; early start to pass through a fairly hectic immigration and hopped on the ferry to begin day one of slow boating to Laos. Lovely food and scenery and by far the nicest way to travel. We were taken to a local village which felt a little like a human zoo. The people have no electricity and their farm animals live among them; interesting in a morbid kind of way. Mekong river is beautiful but very turbulent - I wouldn’t want to end up in it!Read more

  • Luang Prabang

    February 1, 2024 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Day two of boat living was a breeze. Cold start to the day but it warmed up nicely. Stopped at a cave temple (yay…) and then stopped at a village that specialised in making rice whiskey - they also specialised at putting creatures in said whiskey which gave it “powers”. Quite sad the boat trip has finished now as it was really rather nice. Ended the day getting dinner at a night market which, as always, was eventful.Read more

  • Ock Pop Tok

    February 2, 2024 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Early start to go and watch the monks get their alms at six in the morning. What a curious endeavour. Walked around the morning wet market where you can purchase Laos finest ox gum, chicken feet, pigs trotters, seaweed & black eggs - we bought nothing. Had a coffee and a pan au chocolate at a French café then wandered around town. Went to a fabric workshop place which was dull as all hell. Watched the sunset over the Mekong and wandered the night market. A fine day.Read more

  • Kuang Si

    February 4, 2024 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

Took a trip to the famous waterfall, Kuang Si. The water must have a lot of calcium in it as it was forming beautiful white stalagmites (or tites?). Had a swim in the frigid waters which lasted all of about ten minutes as it was too cold. The area also had a sloth bear sanctuary - a nice little bonus to the trip.Read more

  • Vang Vieng

    February 5, 2024 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Rode the new high speed train built by China today. Had to do an airport security check before getting on! Very fast and smooth, especially compared to some of the buses we've been on. Arrived in Vang Vieng and it was very hot so we just hung out, doing very little. Watched the hot air balloons and sunset then went for dinner, not a bad day being a travelling man.Read more

  • Da blu lagooon

    February 6, 2024 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

How did they get a motorbike up a 650 meter mountain you ask? I honestly have no idea. Big hike day today starting with a romp up to a viewpoint and then to the 'Blue Lagoon 1'. Sat, read and swam all day and then hiked home. Lovely job.Read more

  • Balloons, blue lagoons & bridges

    February 7, 2024 in Laos ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Hired some exceptionally rubbish bikes to cycle twenty kilometres in the thirty degree heat. Today I had my first feeling of "what the hell am I doing". Went back over the rickety bridges that seem to have about three more crossings in them before they fall into the bubbling waters below. 'Blue Lagoon 2' was a lot like 'Blue Lagoon 1' - clean & refreshing. Cycled back, stopping to watch the hot air balloons and sunset.Read more
