    Cunnamulla to Goondiwindi

    28. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 19 °C

Around 7 degrees when we left Cunnamulla but it felt warmer. We couldn't find a rest area within 100km so we just pulled off the road for breakfast. Of course there was a truck pullover spot 13km later! We had lunch at St George at a pub with a fireplace in the beer garden - seemed to be a very popular spot just across from the river. Although this was the Adventure Way, the road was not in good condition. Saw a few dead feral pigs on the side of the road and lots of live emus.Læs mere

  • Port Lincoln to Clare

    21. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 11 °C

Lots of cereal crops and sheep on the Eyre Peninsula then the contrast of Whyalla, which was very industrial. We went up Hummock Hill lookout for a great view of the city and the Spencer Gulf. We had lunch at Port Augusta and our walk along the jetty. We took the Horrocks Pass road through the Flinders Ranges, stopping at a monument to the Goyder Line, then on to Clare for the night.Læs mere

  • Ceduna to Port Lincoln

    20. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 17 °C

A bit windy when we left Ceduna, but quite nice at Streaky Bay where we stopped for morning tea. There were the most aggressive seagulls we've ever encountered and staff said a few things had been snatched the day before. We walked along the jetty then did a side trip to Murphy's Haystacks at Mortana. Another jetty walk at Elliston then stopped for the night at Port Lincoln.Læs mere

  • Esperance to Fraser Range Station

    17. juli 2019, Australien

A little while after starting off this morning we decided the car sounded a little 'whiney'. After investigating under the bonnet at a service station we phoned the RAC. The mechanic who came suggested we were burning oil so go to see another mechanic, who put oil in, suggested a sevice when we get across the Nullarbor and that we get more oil. That meant going down the road to Repco, after which we stopped at Bunnings for coffee as it was close. No more noise from the car but we took it slowly to Norseman. Lovely salmon gums along the way (and a place called Salmon Gums). Norseman was named after an early goldminer's horse - the street signs have a horse and a gold nugget on them.Læs mere

  • Walpole to Esperance

    16. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

This morning we did the Valley of the Giants treetop walk through red and yellow tingle trees as well as lots of other native plants. It is also quokka habitat but it was morning so we didn't see any. We went on to Albany for a quick look at the silo art, more at Ravensthorpe, then drove to Esperance. It's the first time we have arrived in the dark but our accommodation gave us a free night as some of the showers weren't working.Læs mere

  • Walpole via Bridgetown

    15. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 11 °C

We ran out of south- west today, visiting Cape Leeuwin where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. Thete were whales swimming past but a long way out. We had lunch at Bridgetown then stopped in Shannon National Park to look at some Karri trees about 85 metres high and thought to be over 300 years old. Staying the night at Walpole YHA.Læs mere

  • Margaret River area

    14. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

Today started at 4 degrees but the wind chill made it about 2. We went to MadFish winery, the Cowaramup Brewing Company, Margaret River Dairy Company and the Margaret River Chocolate Company. After all that food, we needed a walk on the beach at Surfer's Point and the Margaret River mouth.Læs mere

  • Coogee to Bunbury

    12. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

A chilly morning and it didn't really warm up all day. We went south through Kwinana and Mandurah then inland to the Harvey Dam where we had morning tea. There were lots of parrots and butterflies. We walked up to and along the dam wall. The area had lots of livestock - sheep, beef and dairy cattle, pigs and alpacas. We didn't see much of Bunbury except the waterfront so we'll go for a walk tomorrow.Læs mere

  • Coogee Beach

    11. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We were offered our accommodation at a greatly reduced rate for an extra night so we took advantage and had a relaxed day. We walked from Woodman Point to Coogee Beach, then back, and drove the car back to Coogee! Morning tea at the beach, then back to the unit where we sorted out all our maps and planned the next week or two.Læs mere

  • Rottnest Island

    10. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

We went to Fremantle and caught the ferry to Rottnest Island. The hop-on hop-off bus was very crowded at first but quite a lot of people got off at the early stops. We saw quokkas, ospreys, seals, peacocks, seagulls, and crows. On the way back the boat had to slow as apparently there were whales, but we didn't see them. Rottnest has solar and wind power and tank water, only the vehicles use diesel.Læs mere

  • Perth

    9. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Not much driving this morning - just to Cockburn station to catch the train into the city. We had a coffee at the London cafe then got the hop-on hop-off bus to see the sights. After the Mint, the WACA, Optus stadium and Crown Casino, we got off at King's Gardens and enjoyed a few hours. Great views of Perth and so many beautiful plants. Back on the bus, back to the train and back to 'home', which is a cabin at a caravan park for a couple of nights.Læs mere

  • Geraldton to Coogee

    8. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 13 °C

We have to adjust to cold starts every morning now - about 10 degrees when we got on the road to continue south. Lots of flowering plants along the roadside so a slow journey so we could admire them. More sheep and cattle properties evident. We had lunch at a beautiful park in Gingin. Petrol in Perth was the cheapest for the whole trip so far but lots of starting and stopping so we'll use more. A quick stop at Cottesloe to stretch our legs then the final leg to Coogee.Læs mere

  • Geraldton

    7. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ 14 °C

A catch-up day with groceries and gas to buy. We also decided to try to buy another swag but nothing suited so we bought a cheap doona to augment the sleeping mats which have proven to be a bit cold.

  • Denham

    5. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Clear skies this morning so we went for a walk along the heritage trail and bought our National Parks pass. The visitor centre has a lot of information about wrecks off the coast and a memorial to the HMAS Sydney. We drove to Francois Peron National Park and looked at the buildings that remain from a former sheep station. It didn't look like good sheep country! On the way back we stopped at Little Lagoon and David walked around it.Læs mere

  • Carnarvon to Denham

    4. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

A lovely drive here with views of the seagrass beds and coast. We could see the rain clouds gathering so thought we might get a cabin for 2 nights but it would have been expensive so we pitched the tent. Rain and wind came so we sat in the car downtown, drinking coffee and reading. The tent stayed up though and the inside was dry so we had a cosy night.Læs mere

  • De Grey River to Dampier

    2. juli 2019, Australien ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Much greener today and some flowers along the roadside. Also ant hills with hard hats! It became an undustrial landscape through Port Hedland with salt mines and iron ore ships. We drove through Roebourne then had lunch at Wickham - both small towns. Through Karratha to camp at Dampier near the sea. It was named after the British explorer. The memorial to Red Dog of book, song and movie fame is at the entrance to town and there ia a Roaming with Red Dog Trail around town. The Burrup Peninsula, or Murujuga, which means "Hip Bone Sticking Out" in the Yaburrara language, is home to what is believed to be the largest collection of ancient rock art in the world.Læs mere
