Visiting the black townships

Under apartheid, townships were set up where blacks had to live. Those townships still exist. The pics are of a street scene, inside one of the hostels where people live, especially rural folks moving to the city. Then a room where 10 people live in the hostel as they wait to be given better housing, which is being built, albeit slowly. Then, pictures of a school, outside and in. Finally, people who grew up in the township but who have "made it" often prefer to remain in the township. This is a bar and cafe on a secondary road in the middle of nowhere. The name has nothing to do with the business except to draw people in. (Obviously, it worked.) The closest anything comes to the name are all the bras that have been left (and signed) hanging over the bar. And, yes, that is the name of the cafe.Read more

One of the largest screen aviaries anywhere. We saw so much, I couldn't remember all the names. There is a pheasant, scarlet ibis, a tree of spoonbills and more. They say there are over 500 species of bids there, including Canada geese, but I didn't think a photo was needed.Read more

A beautiful little town in a valley that is reachable only by very bad roads--one hour to go 6 kilometers. The road goes up through a pass and then down into the valley. There is a road sign that says it all. And the views are beautifulRead more

We stayed here. One of the highlights is that local choirs sing and local bands play each night at the lodge. We were there 2 nights. 2 different choirs sang and 2 bands played. I do enjoy African vocal harmonies. Note that the band played all home made instruments. I tried to figure out how to record them all, but I wasn't successful.Read more

Another example of educators making do. First i the school yard, followed by the school garden. The kids work the garden as a science project, and they eat what they grow. Then you see the school kitchen. A picture of the view from the school and a couple classrooms. I was especially taken by the poster in the beginners' class (grade 1) showing their work at understanding the many religions around them. It is good to start early teaching kids to respect various belief systems.Read more

Art of the San people, well over 1,000 years old.. The second picture, antelope, is actually engraved. Engraving are very rare, only a handful are known. The others are paintings. One is of an eland. The 4th, if you look closely, is two shamans laying hands on a sick person. Amazing to see. The last is a nearby waterfall.
BTW, that isn't a typo with a capital as the second letter. In Zulu, that often occurs. Haven't found out why.Read more
