  • Heiligabend

    24. joulukuuta 2022, Indonesia ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

After a stormy night with lots of rain, we were greeted by more rain in the morning and the rest of the day. We made the best of it by hitting the gym and treating ourselves to some good old German Christmas Movies on Netflix. In the evening we had a wonderful 6 course dinner at our hotel. • Nusa Dua (25.-29.12.)

    25. joulukuuta 2022, Indonesia ⋅ 🌧 28 °C

Today we moved on to our next stop: Hotel Conrad. Unfortunately we do not like it at all even though it costs a fortune and apparently has 5 stars. On top of that it’s pouring outside and we’re thinking about leaving this place (and potentially Indonesia altogether) asap. Rainy season surely is getting a bit unnerving.

The good news: We had some amazing Indian food today. 😋

PS: When this chapter is over we’ll post an article on our experiences with different types of accommodation - especially how difficult it can be to assess different places from afar.

  • Australia - Perth here we are! (29.-31.)

    29. joulukuuta 2022, Australia ⋅ ☀️ 30 °C

We decided to escape rainy season and flew in an almost empty airplane from Bali to Perth. Yay!!!

Perth did not disappoint us. ☀️ Within 36 hrs we explored most of the cities‘ highlights. 🙌🏼

We love the city. It’s super neat and tidy and has a great vibe and especially the harbor front with the bridge is beautiful. There were even sand sculptures depicting Christmas scenes. Super cool!

Our hotel is great and centrally located on George Street - perfect for a short stopover. We spend 1,5 warm and sunny days in the city and enjoy food and drinks by the Aperol Bar.

We particularly enjoyed the trip to Fremantle beach where we had the most beautiful sunset at the beach. The Big City Hop on Hop off Bus Tour was also amazing and we had a stunning view over the city from Kings garden. Definitely a recommendable city!

  • New Year’s Eve in Sydney

    31. joulukuuta 2022, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

    *** SYD NYE ***

Semmy and I had always dreamed of spending New Year’s in Sydney and being among the First Nations to celebrate the upcoming year. For both of us this dream came true today! Spending it here together during our big trip makes it even more special. 🙏🏻🤩

Our early morning flight from Perth to Sydney with Virgin was super cool as we were having a lot of fun with the flight attendants who were heavily covered with glitter all over. Even the plane interior had been decorated with lametta. 😂

And we had a free seat in our row for some extra room. 🙌

After a short 4,5h flight to the east coast we headed to our Hotel (Veriu Green Square) to shower and get dressed for the night. At 8pm we arrived at the Royal Botanic Garden where we had booked a Picnic 🧺 for the night. The food was really good and with a few drinks we quickly got into party mode.

From where we sat we had a good view on the famous Harbour Bridge where most of the fireworks were being launched from. At 9pm a pre-new year’s firework show was held so that small children could also enjoy the evening before then going to bed. The grand finale then happened at 00:00 after an exciting count down. It was the best firework ever. 🎆

    Happy New Year! 🍀

  • Bondi Beach Blues, NSW (04.-10.01.)

    5. tammikuuta 2023, Australia ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

We move on from Hotel Life at Green Square to AirBnB Life and are looking forward to having a little bit more space again. While hotels are great, they just have a different vibe. We were quite happy with Veriu as it gave us easy access to public transport (metro/trains/ferrys) being fairly central located. Now that we have seen a lot of Sydney we are ready for life by the sea - enjoying sunbathing and swimming at the beach. Bondi was the perfect location for this next episode. The view from the beach walk over the bay was gorgeous and we really enjoyed the cold(!) waters of the Pacific Ocean (actually it is the Tasman Sea but as that’s obviously connected to the pacific we won’t bother calling it like that).

We were both surprised by the sheer force of the waves crashing onshore - releasing vast amounts of energy. In contrast to Europe’s / Thailand’s or Bali’s beaches here in Eastern Australia there are Lifeguards everywhere. Swimming is mostly only allowed (strongly recommend actually) between red-yellow flags where there are Lifeguards on duty who constantly monitor the people who are swimming. And they are absolutely needed. Not because people are bad swimmers but because the crashing waves and strong rip currents can really get you into life threatening situations.

In the Bondi Beach bay currents are very strong and swimming against them is simply impossible. For example: If you get dragged away from shore by one you need to relax and focus on staying afloat. The rip current will eventually deteriorate giving you a chance to make it back to shore on your own OR some Lifeguard angel will come and get you. We have seen some action on the beaches and without them there would a lot more people drowning than you might think. Thanks to the Lifeguards and their professional gear (Helicopters, boats, Jetskis etc.) this is prevented in most cases. 🙏🏻

Semmy and I are good swimmers and enjoyed the sea a lot. We’re also no big risk takers and do respect mother nature so we didn’t swim out too far. Safety first 👍

Our time at Bondi was really nice even though we had 2-3 rainy/cloudy days. These were actually a blessing in hindsight as it gave us time to look into our route plans and do some necessary research - especially regarding camper van rental options in Australia and New Zealand which turned out to be much harder than expected.

Our initial plan was to rent a motorhome to head from Sydney to Sunshine Coast as part of a one way trip and fly to New Zealand afterwards to rent another one there for at least 4 weeks - ideally even longer.

It didn’t take long for us to get reality checked the hard way. In OZ there were simply no suitable motorhomes available for a one way trip as most private owners (understandably) want their vehicle brought back to the same location. Rental companies with drop off at different locations had all their vehicles rented out which left us with either super shitty OR super fancy (and huge!) ones - all incredibly overpriced. For New Zealand it was practically the same. But as we definitely wanted to go camping there, we decided to save our money for later and rent an SUV for our road trip in Australia and sleep in affordable hotels.

We definitely had some ups and downs during the booking phase but in the end it turned out well. 😌

  • Sunshine Coast - Pelican Waters Resort

    16. tammikuuta 2023, Australia ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Our northernmost stop on our Roadtrip is the Sunshine Coast. Here we spent 3 nights at the Pelican Waters Resort.

We checked out from our hotel in Brisbane and after a free of charge breakfast (thanks to bad wifi connection in our room and generous service staff!) we head on the road for a mere 1,5h drive to Pelican Waters Resort which is part of Sunshine Coast.

As we learned the “Sunshine Coast” isn’t a city but a peri-urban region (aka district) contained in the Shires of Landsborough, Maroochy and Noosa. It is located 100 km north of Brisbane in South East Queensland, on the Coral Sea coastline.

We are with 26° South now closer to the Equator than e.g. Egypt’s capital Cairo (30° North). And after already having felt the suns intensity the hard way we now definitely stick to sunscreen 🧴.

Our resort is absolutely gorgeous with a mixture of tourist and long term residents. We have a massive pool, a gym, a BBQ area, Tennis courts, an Arcade Game Room incl Table Football (Soccer!) and a Sports Bar. It’s a little bit like a cruise ship on land with a golf course next door (currently under maintenance). We love the change of scene, the spacious apartment and the option to cook if we feel like it.

  • Levin-Wellington-Picton-Momorangi Bay

    4. helmikuuta 2023, Uusi Seelanti ⋅ ☀️ 25 °C

Drove the last bit down to Wellington to get on to our pre-booked Interislander ferry down to Picton. We had wonderful sunny weather on the way and spent half of the time outside on deck. The trip through Queen Charlotte Sound was absolutely stunning. We sat on deck for 1,5h with some cold beer waiting for the previous vessel to leave port. It was the nicest wait ever. ☀️

At 18:30 we arrive at Momorangi Campsite after a beautiful ride along Queen Charlotte Coastal Drive.
