    Moving On Day

    I går, Australia ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

    We spent 3 nights by the Don River but moved on this morning. All plans out the window for travelling inland up to Mackay. We are in Rockhampton now. Three nights at Gracemere Caravan Park. We have booked the ute in for a quick check up after 2000ks of its new suspension.

    We are staying until Friday morning so Jade and Lisa can visit us from Blackwater on Thursday.

    We stopped at Mount Morgan for a picnic brunch. Boiled eggs on crusty bread rolls at the lookout which over looks the old gold mine. Met a few men up there who are old enough to remember so much about the place when they worked there probably 40 years ago. We visited the information centre and read up on more history. And we got a sticker for Mount Morgan for the car. Rules are that we can purchase a sticker if we stay in the town or if we visit and look around.

    We arrived with a lot of washing. But they had 4 machines here for only $3 a load. So its all hanging on the line now. Sheets washed and dried. Fresh towels. Long long hot showers. Its a lovely independent park. I'll pop some photos on tomorrow. Quirky vibe. Very clean and tidy. Very well cared for park.

    We will go for walk around town centre tomorrow after car service. Wash the car. Get some groceries. Visit the Botanical Gardens.

    I'm finding out how much we WASTED on food expenditure. It costs so little to keep us fed. We are not eating out. We buy a few crusty bread rolls from a bakery to eat with soup... we buy small amounts of meat as needed...and we use up what we have before we get more food...

    FIRST RIVER CAMP

    Travelled on from Wandoan yesterday and landed here at Don River Free Camp. We absolutely lucked out and got one of the very few riverside camp sites and have decided to stay here for three nights. Our first one of the trip.

    We purchased fuel in Wandoan but the grocery store didn't have what we wanted so we moved on to Taroom where we picked up a few extra supplies with the plan to be staying next for a few days at the Apex Park on the Dawson River outside of Moura.

    We drove there - and it was very busy - really nowhere to set up - and we both decided we would find some place else.

    Drove to Banana - got some fuel and I looked at the camps app - saw Don River Free Camp - followed another caravan all the way here - we thought "I bet it's full up by now" being 2pm in the afternoon. Only one other person here on another part of the river - the van in front hesitated at the dirt turn in and kept going - and we scored - we checked there was no rain expected because it is black soil and the warning is not to stay in the rain. No rain warnings. so we will stay the three nights now.

    I popped a little video on here of the Leichardt Highway - QLD roads are an absolute joke - but hey - what are we complaining about - we have the Olypic Games to think about. Bumped into a man from NSW heading into Chinchilla and he was astounded at the roads - we said "Welcome To QLD Mate"    Les mer

    Wandoan Overnight

    We pulled up for the night at Waterloo Plains in Wandoan. Such and interesting and well maintained park that was imagined by the locals and is a credit to the town.

    "Waterloo Plains Environmental Park is a popular, free-to-use campground and recreational area located on Lane Street in Wandoan, Queensland. It features an 11-hectare parkland, a man-made lake for native birdlife, and facilities including hot showers, toilets, and picnic tables."

    There is a 5k track around this place - we went for a bit of a walk - and we saw baby swans for the first time. So cute. There is a video and some photos of them.

    We thought we were going to get hammered by a storm but we just got some wind and a bit of rain during the night. But we packed up the awning and finished making our soup and went in the van for dinner and few games of Yatzee.

    RESTART. Leaving AGAIN. Take Two.

    After nearly a three week stay at Lowood Mick finally completed his caravan towing and reversing course - we weighed in correctly - and we set of back to Broadwater Lake for a few nights where we spent a night prior to arriving in Lowood. It was origin night and we watched it in the caravan because it was quite cold. Bugger Mick won - NSW won and he was very happy. He talked about it and was on FB for the next few days lapping up the winners giving the losers crap.

    $31 bucks for the 2 nights - peaceful and calm - had a very slow full day there on the Thursday. Feet up and puzzle book out. No thinking. No planning. No fixing.

    We didn't see possums the first time we were here but they were here the first night and wandered through the camp like they owned it - walking between our legs - big and small - pooing all over the mat - and it looks like Mick is feeding it but he is not - he put his hand down and was nipped at - LOL - we finished our dinner and they moved to another camp. It even drank our dirty water and balanced on the bucket edge.

    The smell then came in extremely strong - at first we thought the smell was the lake - but it wasn't - as soon as I realised that it reminded me of living in Holmview for years with the smell of the meat works wafting through our home regularly - I realised we were lucky last time here and we didn;t smell it.

    It seeped in the caravan and smell was horrendous - the caretaker explained the next day that it is a feedlot with 70,000 head of cattle - mind boggling - and they continuosuly make fertilizer. When the wind comes that way and air is cold the smell is worse.

    Luckily the night was warmer the next day and the smell went away - we even considered in the moring packing up and moving on but we both really didn't want to travel and we needed a day of rest.

    I did a quick watercolour and pen sketch of the coolest tree. It really looked like a snake was etched into the bark. I absolutely loved it so did a sketch to remember meeting this tree.    Les mer

    NOT WHAT WE EXPECTED

    So this post will fill you in on why we will be here at Lowood until next Tuesday the 8th. State of origin final day.

    The day after Micks birthday (23rd June) we were booked in for a one on one caravan towing and weight course. This was originally meant to be done in May before we left our home but they postponed. A little miracle this ended up (even though as per usual I was upset about the change at the time) because having to deal with what came next was not something I would have been able to handle while packing and leaving our home.

    As you are aware we already had the van back for warranty on roof solar, window install and then window leak.

    But as we arrived in Lowood we realised that the solar was not charging from the panels on the roof again.

    So we knew we had to take it back to Caboolture again.

    Then the caravan expert arrived. He weighed us first before the driving part. Van was under weight but needed to have more weight in back and less at towball end but it was legal. Thats been adjusted now.

    But the brand new 4wd hi lux that is a one ton ute with new springs put in by Mick was way way over. 600kg over. Even if packed differently there was no way we could make this legal. The GVM on a new vehicle doesn't even take into account a full fuel tank and some don't even account for a passenger in the vehicle. Ours had a Towbar, Bullbar, canopy all put on by Toyota. Nothing said by them even though they knew why we purchased it. We then put a roof tent, awning AND all these metal drawers in the back for funky storage system.

    Our heart sank. Apparently the springs Mick put in are not taken into account when weighed because they are not certified and named on a compliance plate.

    So after some research and deep discussion we went with a full GVM upgrade at Pedders. Extremely expensive and has eaten a good chunk of our budget for this year but the peace of mind and knowledge that we are towing safe as well as a much smoother drive is so worth it. It was hard to swallow but I'm really glad it happened.

    When this was done a lot changes on a vehicle including lights and brakes. So new ceremic brakes, foam struts (not gas) are also done. And a lovely blue compliance plate under the bonnet.

    What blows my mind is the amount of people out there like us that purchase a new car and load up but are not legal. Our car seemed to tow fine. But it wasn't. Not really.

    I really believe everyone who wants to tow a caravan needs to do this day course and with that they can register it and tow it. I think that this is a high chance of coming in soon. The police are weighing out west. We had heard 65 of 90 vans pulled over are overweight in van, towball or vehicle. We have been warned of fines being issued of $5000 in NT. We are aware that different rules apply in different states.

    And now our vehicle and van are legal and we dont have to worry about not being covered in our insurance cover if something bad happened.

    Now Pedders on the car and the caravan. We did not put the heavy metal drawers back in. They weighed a stupid 300kg. They are going into Micks tool shed at home. We are legal. Underweight. Have capacity to put some wood in every so often.

    We actually really like the new set up. Good old plastic crates. Nothing stacked. Can see everything at a glance and generally do not have to move something to get to something else.

    And while here we hit 20000 k service so had this done as well.

    The caravan course and reweigh will happen on Tuesday 7th next week and away we go on 8th.

    As much as all of this has not been easy to accept it is all a blessing. I cannot see it any other way. Better now than later.    Les mer

    Mick said he wanted to learn how to make pasta on his travels. He had purchased a second hand brand new pasta maker at a second hand shop years ago. These photos are of his second effort and he made a fettuccine and a bolonaise sauce. I think this is an incredible effort. No more packet pasta for us.     THE BEST LAID PLANS...

    The famous quote is, "The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry." (Robert Burns) It means that no matter how carefully you prepare for something, unexpected events can still cause your plans to fail.

    We had made minimal plans but had booked Proserpine to land first after we left Micks Mum's place after his birthday.

    First plan out the window was the caravan not drawing power through the solar panels on the roof. Draws power through the solar panel blanket. Not the roof. Same thing as at the beginning and same thing that had already been fixed. It was working fine. Then not. So calls to Arctic. Van had to be taken AGAIN back to Caboolture and it is now ready with a promise that this should not happen again. We collect her again on Monday. Another trip to Caboolture. Can't escape the place.

    We had booked in a caravan training course that was cancelled once but rescheduled to the 23rd June which was the day after DeMicks birthday.

    All this would have allowed for an easy 4 weeks to travel the coast up to Port Douglas where we have accommodation booked at a caravan park for 8 nights from 31st July. Do some serious sightseeing and catch up with a friend.

    Then the above quote came into play again. We will not be leaving Lowood until the 8th July. In time to watch the origin game in a camp somewhere. And then we have until 31st July to land in Port Douglas.

    We have needed a few days to regroup. Think. Gather our bearings.

    When the caravan and towing course trainer started the course the first thing was a weigh in before the remainder of the towing and reversing part of the course.

    But the car was massively overweight. Not the van.
    Even with the new springs Mick did on the car. They are not counted in giving us more capacity of weight to carry due to our laws.

    So all the tool boxes we purchased have come out. They weighed so much. They will now become shed storage at home for DeMick. The towbar, bull bar, even the lightweight roof top tent and awning, all the additions add up. So storage boxes are gone.

    We have booked the car in for a full upgraded suspension at Pedders for next Wednesday. This will give us the maximum upgrade we can have and allow for us to be under weight even. Which is my aim.

    We have repacked in plastic crates and now have learnt how to pack car and van. We have sorted out everything we have. It was messy but now neater and tidier and every item is weighed. Recorded in my little travel book.

    We will be reweighed and complete the caravan course on the 7th July. We will pass with flying colours.

    Interesting info... apparently police pulled over about 90 caravans in Emerald the other day. As an exercise in gaining info about weights. 65 vans and cars come in overweight. Crazy. I read that on a caravan site. But I can honestly see how it happens and now look at every car and van differently.

    DeMick has to take all this stuff back to Bauple on the 3rd... which happens to be a Friday... so he gets to catch up with his friends. So bonus for some play time.

    So we did.

    DeMick made pasta for the FIRST time and nailed it within his $3 pasta maker from Vinnies that he has had in the kitchen cupboard for years.

    Sunrises

    Broadwater Lake. Sunrise.
    I woke up and it was light and the sky a pale pink. I thought I had missed the sunrise. I went to the loo. Then I looked out over the lake. The sun was now rising.

    The birds, corellas, were going crazy. So loud. Pairs of them in all the branches of the trees.

    I sat on a log and watched the sun come up. The birds went crazy. I realized they were singing the day in....

    The Sun finally came up and the birds stopped. It was a surreal experience.

    I wrote this.

    "It's strikes me as sensible,
    to catch the morning sun,
    to gather the day to me and choose the way I want it done,
    set my intention to the light,
    a new day to feel blessed.
    Watch and listen to the birds

    Travelling is Exhausting

    I'm tired. Lol. Is very tiring this travelling. Im a lot more active. I seem to be forever busy, getting ready to leave, arriving, cooking, looking, driving. But I do believe DeMick and I are starting to sync.

    We left Judd's Lagoon at 9am. We went to Miles. This town deserves an award for tidy and inviting and friendly. We got a sticker for the car. 5 now. Then we headed to Chinchilla.

    We planned to stay at Chinchilla weir but it wasn't doing it for us after Judd's Lagoon the night before. Just way to crowded and some permanent camps on the edges with lots of rubbish around. Just didnt feel good.

    We did have to visit Chinchilla tourist office for a sticker and the obligatory photo with large melon... gotta love the big things...

    We drove on to another rest stop and that was very close to road and we had a bit of time spare to still get somewhere for the night.

    Third place is perfect. Broadwater Lake Conservation Park. 15 bucks for the night. Clean. Toilets. Showers. Some powered sites. We stayed of grid and away from the busy powered and showered section.

    Another magic night. Fire. A bit of master chef. Roast vegetables for dinner. And a reasonably early night.

    Tomorrow we will be at DeMicks Mums for a few days. But I will sleep in van out the front of their house. I love my bed on wheels.    Les mer

    JUDDS LAGOON

    Travelled from Carnarvon to East of Roma 4ks from Yuleba to a free camp on a lagoon. Judds Lagoon Q. We are only staying one night but seriously we could relax here for a few days.

    Watching state of origin by a campfire under the stars. Mick goes NSW and I go for QLD. I'm writing before its finished. I'll edit with the winner.

    We left the Big4 caravan park a day early. We were both aching for off grid and to not be so close to other people. We definitely scored with this site for the night.

    Our pack up and set ups are gradually becoming more fluid. We are both communicating better. And we are looking forward to some time to travel organically without the pressure to be in a certain place by a certain time.

    We are now heading back to Lowood to spend a few days with Micks Mum and Dave to celebrate his 55th.

    Tomorrow we will stay at Chinchilla weir... at this stage... unless its stupid crowded and we go elsewhere.    Les mer

    Coolest Tree and Platypus

    We went for a walk along the creek spotting for platypus and in the first few minutes we saw this one. I have added a short 11 second video.

    As we walked down to the creek we were taken aback by this enormous tree. Covered in fruit growing from its trunk on small branches. I think it's a fig. I broke open one that looks exactly like a small fig and it was full of insects. I stood in awe of this tree which has to be older than white settlement in this country. I wondered how many have eaten its fruit. I was in awe that it has survived and is still here.Les mer

    Carnarvon Gorge

    Today I put my big boy pants on and went for a 6.4klm treck to Boolimba Bluff. It was a great walk with a challenging 300m climb to get to the bluff. With amazing views and it only took me 2 sandwiches 1 bottle of water and 4 beers but well worth the hike. By Mick. Not Wendy.Les mer

    Blackwater QLD

    I just lost everything I wrote. So now this is short and sweet. Arrived late Thursday afternoon at Blackwater. Had a lovely time with Jade and Lisa. Pictionary, great food, went out for lunch for Lisa birthday today, spent time with my daughter in law Lisa in the van colouring in, painting our nails and chatting. We leave tomorrow morning for Carnavon. We will see Jade and Lisa in September and again in October.Les mer

    After leaving the hosts with the mostest in Thorneside Q on Sunday morning we arrived at Kath and Micks for an overnight in Bauple on Sunday night. Mick cooked us a spectacular roast chicken dinner. Kath and I did some simple art. I washed my hair and we were spoilt by our very good friends. Next time we see them they will be catching up with us in Sapphire Q for a week in the beginning of September later this year.

    Mick and I were feeling really exhausted and agreed that we would like to go someplace to sit steady and quietly for a few days. So we left Marybourough Q after my doctor appointment on Monday morning and meandered our way to Wuruma Dam through Ban Ban Springs and Eisvold to this awesome free camp.

    Concrete slabs - clean toilets - grassed sites - it is quiet and it is dark at night.

    Today we have relaxed and Mick got to have a sleep in.

    I have been on my computer and worked a little and redirected some more mail and email addresses that I had forgotten to do.

    There is a lot to think of when packing up and leaving your home for a few years. The tenant of our home moved in on Friday and when we drove past on Sunday we saw a large hammock on the deck in the sunshine and are hopefull that the tenant enjoys and looks after our home.

    Mick has set up his darts today and we just had a kookarburra land on his dart board. He is surrounded by ducks and birds. They all think he is throwing food to them.

    The weber has a roast cooking and we are feeling blessed that it has been cloudy today but not raining. Roast beef and baked vegetables for dinner.

    I am trying to remember to take a photo of our set up at each place we stay. There were quite a few vans in here this morning - all white - then you see our set up - very dark and silver - very different to the other set ups and I think it looks great.

    A friend has reminded me to put in the posts where we are and I have tried to do that this time.

    I also had another friend put comments on the photos - I have tried to put captions on some of the photos but until I post this I'm not sure that has worked.

    We will be here at Wuruma Dam until Thursday when we leave to go to Blackwater.    Les mer

    THE HOSTS WITH THE MOST

    We are so fortunate to have stayed with my old school mate Sheryl and her lovely husband Mo. They offered us our own rooms, laundry use, bathroom to ourselves. We truly appreciated this hospitality but the best thing was the company. Honestly it is so interesting to observe how many things we actually had in common. 46 years had passed by. I sat there and wondered on what drew us as teenagers to be friends. Without understanding it then we actually had the similar values. And these are still apparent even now.

    And interestingly enough the theme for June in the Inspired Living Collective is VALUES.

    The photo of Sheryls protest sign she made is about the part she is playing along with many other people to fight against a system that allows destruction of koalas habitat under the guise of providing education and jobs and economy 🙄 but only for the extremely wealthy. And with no consideration for the future generations only focusing on their own lives and immediate benefits.

    We have a plan to return in October where Mick will watch Seinfeld with Sheryl. Because I dont. Hahaha

    As we left Thorneside the electric brake light was flashing. We sorted this. But i was so proud of us. No getting upset. No getting frustrated with each other. No panic. We were chill. Worked together. Solved the issue. Im really liking that we did that.

    We are now on our way back to Bauple. Stay a night with Kath and Mick. A doctor appointment in Maryborough for me and then of to do 3 nights free camp somewhere before rocking into my son Jade and daughter inlaw Lisa place in Blackwater on Thursday.    Les mer

    OLD STOMPING GROUND

    We landed in Beenleigh at the Show Grounds on Monday. We leave tomorrow morning. Family visits and catch ups.

    For those that dont know, a large proportion of my life was here in Beenleigh area. My kids grew up here. My parents settled in the area. I dont come back often now they are gone.

    Visited with my brother and sister in law, my two aunties, my high school bestie and went to Maclaey Island today to visit my sister and brother in law. It has been pleasant to see everyone.

    The islands craft group have crocheted heaps of things on poles where the ferry comes in. These are in the photos.

    Tomorrow we head to stay with an old school friend in the Redlands, from Cleveland High, class of 1980..... 46 years ago we left school together. Be an interesting catch up.

    All my teen years were in the Redlands. I was born in the old St Ann hospital (not there any longer). My Nana had strawberry farms where my Dad grew up during and after world war 2. I have always considered this is my homeland. Even though it is absolutely nothing like it once was and I have no intention of living there again. An incredible amount of memories in these places. Not all good. Not all bad. Just the past.

    Im heading into my future. Thats exciting.    Les mer

    DART THERAPY..ANYWHERE...ANYTIME... it was so funny and true because he is playing online with people all over the world.

    He has a camera in that old 🎣 fishing rod holder. And this is geniunely his own therapy session. Doing something he loves to do.    Les mer

    BOREEN POINT

    A collection of photos from the past week at Boreen Point Camp Ground. We finally had a lovely slow relaxed day on the Sunday. Bacon and Eggs for breakfast , a long walk along the esplanade and then Mick set up his dart board and I worked on my computer for Inspired Living Collective. We ended the day with a fire and watching a few Master Chef shows on the TV outside of the van. Very good Sunday.Les mer

    GETTING SORTED

    Well this is what happens when you dont have enough "shakedown" trips before you take of to travel for a few years.

    Stuff needs sorting and modifying. Important stuff. But Mick has done a spectacular job this last week to sort everything out.

    FIrst was the solar in the vehicle. This runs the car fridge...aka...beer fridge, his lights in his room as well as lights on the canopy and charging stuff especially when we go awoll and leave the van somewhere to go deeper into a NP at some stage. So new wiring and Lithium battery and new solar panel set up and everything is neat and tidy.

    Then the water filter needing sorting so that we can filter the water that goes into the tank. This contraption garnered a lot of attention when he made this set up. This required an intense Bunnings visit to gather appropriate twisty things.    Les mer

    Yesterday was a very long day. Yet somehow everything turned out.

    We got up early and had to pack everything up in the rain and drive to Caboolture and drop The Princess of to have her leaky bits attended to.

    Then we went to Kawana Waters to address all the solar/power issues in Silver, which is not just our car but Micks Penthouse, man cave with beer fridge, darts playground, and general storage unit.

    Had TJM install a duel battery system but the system they went with cannot handle what we need. So of we go to KickArse store where we were quoted 1700 without install, and afterwards we realise that wasnt with everything we ended up needing and with us leaving still confused of what we needed to do.

    We then went around the corner to Kings. Thank goodness we did. We had the most geniunely helpful salesman go step by step with us through everything. And we came away only $900 out of pocket and understanding what we needed to do to fix the system we had spent thousands on. Mick will go to a mates on Friday and set it all up with his help. This salesman ended up being a traveller with his wife and they have been stuck with getting a refund on their car as it broke down 20 times going across SA and have been fighting this battle for 7 months. He got confirmation of their agreement to a pay out just before we arrived at store. He was a wealth of good solid information and went the extra mile to make sure Mick knew what to do as well as myself.

    We then did some groceries which is obviously very different from shopping at home. No extra pantry things, buying exactly what is needed. Even then I could have bought less. I feel this will not take long to get my head around.

    We then got on the highway to go pick up the caravan AND TRAFFIC STOPPED for kilometres. Rang the workshop. They said they would come meet us and unlock the gate when we got there. An hour after finally getting there at 4.45 we drive of at 6pm and head back to Boreen Point in the rain.

    Another miracle then happens. Its dark and very difficult to back van in lined up with slab. The new neighbour helped Mick. It stopped raining enough to do this and set up van and the penthouse. Then we cooked some sausages for dinner and Mick, who is an avid NSW supporter, watched his team win the State of Origin first game. Poor Mick had to try and keep his excitement to a minimum as the people that helped us had gone to bed in their van only a few metres from us.

    LESSON.... trust everything is working out. Count my blessings constantly.

    We have had extremely heavy rain all night last night. Even some thunder. Yet we both were dry and snug in our cocoons.

    The weather is gradually clearing. The window appears to be dry. And the sun will be out over the next few days here.

    We have had the rain test... tick that of... we understand what we need and how to manage this on a powered site with a cement slab.

    Im sure we will have a rain test somewhere unpowered and on dirt. But thats for another day.

    We picked all the mandarins of our tree before we left.

    Day 4
    The awning and the new window are leaking. Its been raining heavier today. Which on one hand is disappointing 😞 yet on the other hand is a 🙌 blessing because now we know that there are rain leaks and we are only 1.5hours from Caboolture. We rang them. They will fix tomorrow. Disappointing we have to pack up and take van there first thing in morning yet very grateful they are fixing immediately before we travel to far.Les mer

    The day after we arrived we went to the Appolonian Pub in Boreen Point to see an entertainer we had not seen perform for 20 years.

    Asa Broomhall. When Mick and I were dating - just moved in together - we went to a blues event in the valley in Brisbane and this man was only 21 years old and Mick really enjoyed the way he played guitar and sang - Mick bough the CD and Asa signed it. All these years later Mick mentions to me a few weeks before we leave that he wondered whatever happened to Asa.

    I was cranky at Mick at the time so gave a blunt reply of "That's What Google Is For."

    LOL - next day I am looking up another singer for this pub and I couldn't believe, though I should, because the Universe has a sense of humour, and Asa is playing on the Sunday we arrive at Boreen Point. So obviously I organised for Mick to go see him play again.

    So Mick takes his original CD to see Asa and he gets him to sign it again - all these years later.
