    Edinburgh

    26. elokuuta 2017, Skotlanti ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Day one we arrived into Edinburgh around 12.30pm. After disembarking from the plane we headed to the large tin shed where we proceeded to clear customs. Once through we took a taxi to our accommodation rather then try and catch the bus with all our luggage.

After checking in we decided to walk into the city centre after being assured it was a twenty minute walk. So off we set. I was following at the rear as I was extremely tired and struggled to put one foot after the other. Anyway it took us about 45 minutes to reach the heart of the city. There were many people everywhere as we discovered August is festival month and there were thousands of visitors around, it made just walking down the street without bumping into someone on the footpath pretty impossible. Also discovered the Edinburgh Tattoo only finished this weekend which also partly accounted for the large number of visitors to the city.

We discovered Waverley Station, the main railway station which is huge, set on 20 acres very central and is the 2nd largest in the UK. Eventually we also found a place to have tea and then I convinced Gary that catching public transport back to our accommodation was the best way to go. So for a cost of £1.60 each we caught the bus back. Believe me I was happy to pay the fare and slept really well that night.

Day two we woke refreshed and after an excellent breakfast we made our way via the bus into the city. Once there we purchased a hop on hop off bus ticket and set out to enjoy the day. First stop was to check out the Royal Yacht Britannia which is advertised as the No 1 attraction in the UK. (I really missed my sister Sue doing this bus trip and she is wonderful at the Souvenir shops letting me browse with no pressure.). It took us approximately 2 hours to walk through the Britannia which is kept in spick and span condition. Eventually back on the bus we continued our travels and got off to explore the Holyrood Palace which is another well known landmark to visit. Unfortunately we ran out of time and didn't get to Edinburgh Castle although we had visited this on a previous occasion and were able to view the outside from the bus. We had fish and chips for tea before returning to our guest house accommodation.

Day three it was check out morning in Edinburgh. Left our cases at our accommodation and caught the bus into the city and visited the Childhood Museum which contained many items of long ago and although it was a narrow building it consisted of 5 floors of amazing articles! Toys and games of yesteryear. We enjoyed a couple of interesting hours there. Then walked to Waverley Station where we had organised to collect a hire car. We were given a Black VW Golf Polo which Gary was happy with, not so much the colour as he does not like black cars but definitely the make. Managed to navigate through the heavy Edinburgh traffic and collected our luggage on the way out of the city. Gary had organised a GPS before leaving so that helped us a little to get through the heavy traffic.

Even with the GPS we managed to get quite lost but eventually success and we found The Kelpies which was our first planned destination. Quite an amazing place with these 100 foot high statues of the Kelpies. From there we drove to The Falkirk Wheel. This was another interesting venue which lifts boats in the lock some 27 metres high, enabling them to travel along the waterways . We took the cruise which transported us along this unusual lock voyage.

Decided to stay in the town of Falkirk and found a reasonable hotel with offered dinner meals st £10 for two courses or £12 for three courses. Really excellent value.

This brings me to the end of my email. I wish you all a happy week and until my next update it is bye for now.

  • Isle of Skye

    1. syyskuuta 2017, Skotlanti ⋅ ☀️ 10 °C

    Hi all,

This is just to update you on what we have done over the last 3 days.

Day 4 - Tuesday. We left Falkirk and travelled north stopping at Fort William for lunch. Then onto Glen Finnan where we took time to check out the Viaduct that was used in the Harry Potter movies. While we were there we were lucky to see an old steam train crossing the viaduct. Then the rains came down and it was just as well we had umbrellas as otherwise we would have been soaked. There was a crowd of people who had also stopped and together we had to climb a steep hill to be able to view it properly. Gary who knows nothing about Harry Potter was at a loss as to why it was so popular!!!

Back to the car we travelled beside several Lochs until we reached Glenelg where we caught the ferry to the Isle of Skye. This ferry is the last manually operated turntable ferry in Scotland and people come from all over the world to visit it. To get to the ferry and also on the other side the approach roads were very narrow making it difficult to overtake or even pass another vehicle coming in the opposite direction.

We found accommodation down the south part of the island and had a great view of the coast from our bedroom window. Meals were also provided at a very reasonable rate which was good as being a small place it would have been difficult to find somewhere else to eat.

Day 5 - Wednesday. We set off to explore the Isle of Skye. The hills close by were very barren and the beaches were not beaches that you would swim at. Gary was not particularly impressed and soon put it in the same category as Kangaroo Island, and as people who know him also know that he was not impressed with that island either.
We had lunch at Portree which was a lovely little village on the northern side. When leaving the Isle we were able to cross the bridge that was built in recent years so we did not have to return on the ferry.
Later in the afternoon we travelled beside the famous Loch Ness Lake which is 23 miles long and 1 1/2 miles wide and 433ft deep. It is the largest fresh water lake in the UK. We stopped at the Loch Ness Centre & Exhibition. Again it was really busy but I managed to get a ride on the 4pm Lake Cruise as they had one ticket left. Gary said he didn't mind and was happy just to wait. And no I did not see the Loch Ness Monster but heard all about the sightings over the past 100 years. That evening we arrived into Inverness where we were lucky to get accommodation beside the river not far from the centre of town.

Day 6 - Thursday. After breakfast we walked along to the Inverness Castle where we spent some time checking it out. We had some great views of the city and surrounding area from the top of the tower.
Then we set off once again this time towards Aberdeen along a fairly uninteresting road. There were heaps of vehicles coming and going but very few motor homes or caravans which in the previous few days we had seen plenty of.
We stopped for lunch at Keith a small town along the way, and arrived into Aberdeen mid afternoon. Gary had told me about the buildings made of granite and how on his previous visit back in the 60's they glistened in the sunlight. Unfortunately just before we hit Aberdeen the rains came down so our view of the sparkling granite was pretty much non existent. We decided to keep going and tonight we are in the town of Montrose half way down the east coast. Scotland is not very big but it does take quite some time to get around on the roads.

So folks this is my report up to date. I have just had to retype it as I originally intended to attach some photos but I tried send them from my iPad but it didn't work so I have done this written version on Gary's computer as he has gone to bed.

If you did not get Part 1 of our trip. Let me know and I will resend it as some people had trouble with the picture and type size. As you can see I am not as experienced or as good as my daughter at doing blogs.

    Bye for now,

    Barb.

  • Falkirk

    4. syyskuuta 2017, Skotlanti ⋅ 🌙 12 °C

    > Day 7 - Friday - Today we headed south towards Edinburgh. First up it was washing day so we stopped at the seaside town of Abroath where there was a large laundry. We put the clothes in the machine and a young girl working there offered to transfer them to the dryer at the end of the cycle thus allowing us time to walk around the town and explore. At 12.30 we returned and it was all waiting for us clean and neatly folded in a large white bag. What a lovely young lady. We drove onto Dundee where we stopped for lunch. From there we continued our trek towards Edinburgh and crossed the "Firth of Forth" Bridge. The new one is right beside the old bridge and we had heard it had been opened earlier in the week however on Friday everyone was still using the old bridge. What a fantastic structure the new bridge is. We returned to the hotel at Falkirk for Friday night as the rates were good value and the meals reasonable. We even had time to walk around the small town centre after checking in.
    >
    > Day 8 - Saturday - Up early and left the hotel at 8am for the drive into Edinburgh. This took about an hour and we had to fuel up the car before returning it to the hire car place at Waverley Station. From Waverley we then caught the London train which departed at 11.30am. This was a good trip as it was a fast train with very few stops arriving into Kings Cross just before 4pm. Recalling our time spent in Scotland we were astounded about the number of round-a-bouts which you have to navigate on any of the open roads. They were everywhere, some large and a lot of them very small however they still do the job and the traffic flows evenly around them. Also in Edinburgh there were many of the old Hackney Cabs which to me means you are really in the UK.
    > From Kings Cross we bought underground tickets to Heathrow airport where we were booked to spend the night. These were reasonable at £6 each. The trip took about an hour and we then had to transfer to a bus which took us to the Thistle Hotel about a mile from the airport. They had a bar with an open deck overlooking the departing planes and it was amazing to watch them taking off almost continually one after the other.
    >
    > Day 9 - Sunday - Met up with the tour leader at Terminal 2 at Heathrow around 6am. But it was after 7 before all the rest of the group had passed through customs and collected their luggage. A bus had been organised to take us to the Millennium Hotel at Gloucester where those people who had just got off the plane were able to freshen up. Just after 9 we were off to the "Concours of Elegance" held in the Hampton Court Palace grounds. There were some wonderful old cars on display and we spent over 3 hours walking around and just checking them out. After lunch some of the tour group elected to walk through the palace but Gary did not want to do this so he suggested a boat ride on the River Thames which took over an hour and was most enjoyable. The bus then bought us back to the Millennium Hotel where we are to spend the night. Most of the group elected to eat at an old English pub about a mile away. Gary and I walked there but the others decided to take a taxi however we did join them on the return trip. There are 17 people + the tour leader in the group. Four women including myself and they do all seem lovely.

  • Donington Park, Castle Donington, Derby

    7. syyskuuta 2017, Englanti ⋅ ⛅ 14 °C

    Hi Folks,

This is a new way of sending you a report. I have had trouble with adding photos to emails and last night lost my whole report so I am trying a different approach. Let me know it it works.

Well these last few days have been made up of cars, cars and more cars.

Day 10 - Monday. Left our London Hotel at 9am and passed by some famous landmarks including Harrods and Trafalgar Square. We travelled north to the town of Hethel where we were booked for a Lotus Factory Tour. As we were delayed by heavy traffic it was a sandwich on the bus for lunch which enabled us to reach the Lotus Sportscar Factory just before the appointed time of 1pm. No photos were allowed but we enjoyed our tour of how an expensive Sportscar is made. After this finished we were taken to Classic Lotus where the son of founder Colin Chapman runs the repair and refurbishment of older Lotus Racing Cars.
Our accommodation on Monday night was at Lynford Hall which was an old English country estate that dated back to 1851. It reminded me of one of those old homes you find in Midsummer Murders or an Agatha Christie TV show. In fact at Lynhall Hall they do have murder mysteries staged there and the setting is ideal.

Day 11 - Tuesday. We were off to visit Donington Park. Here we were to find the largest showcase of Grand Prix Racing Cars in the world. There was also a display of Russian Military Vehicles going back to World War 2 and included vehicles that I had never seen before.
Our accommodation for the next 2 nights was at Nuthurst Grange Hotel, another old English home set on 7 acres.

Day 12 - Wednesday. We were away by 8.20 and our first appointment was at the Aston Martin Factory. Now Gary found this particularly interesting as he had worked for David Brown Tractors in England back in the sixties and David Brown himself had bought Aston Martin in 1947 and owned it until 1972. This is why many of the models have DB in the model name. These are all hand built and all the staff were dressed either in a white polo shirts or overalls all embossed with the Aston Martin logo. They all looked very professional. Quite an amazing tour of a very expensive car. Having been used in several James Bond movies was great advertising for their product.
We drove on and after lunch we arrived at the British Motor Museum which again was filled with many old British cars.

Day 13 - Thursday. Another 8.30 departure and this time we were headed to the famed car manufacturer Morgan. They still build cars by hand and use wood for the frames. As well as their popular 4 wheeler they also still build a 3 wheeler which continues to be a great selling model.
They provided lunch for us when we finished the tour and we headed off once more this time bound for The National Automobile Museum in the vehicle of Beaulieu. Gary and I had been here before and again found this museum really interesting.

Thursday night we were bound for Portsmouth which is a lovely old harbour town with some great attractions including the imposing Spinaker Tower.

Tomorrow we are off to the Goodwood Revival so again it should be a busy day.

    Take care,

    Barb
