• Vathy stroll and windy night

    7月9日, ギリシャ ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Super stopover in Vathy, Ithaca where we met up with our sailing buddies Nick and Lou on their way back from the Pelopenese.
Dinner at Nicos and the following morning Nick took us for an amble up 1100 to a nice taverna he knows 😳🥂. It was the village high up behind Vathy and views were spectacular. We had certainly earned our beer when we got there.
We circled back along the side of the hill, past three little churches, through pine woods and olive groves keeping the beautiful view all the way until we dropped back into Vathy. It was a lovely walk and good to get off the boat for a different experience from sailing.
I still haven't found out why in Greece you find tiny little churches in the most obscure and remote locations, maybe it's a test of faith for the congregation to get there. But they are always well maintained and open for you to enter.
After a spot of lunch we then ended up staying on our boats for the next 36 hours while the huge wind came through from the north. By late afternoon the wind was 30 knots with 1.5m of swell and peaked at 42 knots over night. We were up most of the night watching the yachts slipping around us with the port police rescuing one which ended up smashing against the quay. It continued all the next day until 2am peaking at 37 knots. An exhausting couple of days with the boat rolling and very little sleep. Amazingly by the time we left it was like a millpond!
