Early start with a drive through the Kawerau Gorge to Arrowtown. Most of the buildings are old - 1860's or so - and even where new buildings are added they're built of the same materials and look the same as the old. The row of little cottages in the tree lined street are often painted by artists in the yellow leaves of autumn.
The little houses are restored miners buildings in Chinatown where 16 - 20 shacks formed a small village. The best of them were actually quite warm inside and would have been cosy with the fire lit.Read more
