Ha Long Bay!!!

Ha Long bay is sooo cool! We spent two nights there on a cruise and it was wicked. When we first arrived at the harbour i was a little concerned because some of the boats there were looking pretty old and rickety. Our boat was good though, it did look slightly worn on the outisde but on the inside it was really nice! On our first day we went to Sung Sot cave, which was alright, and Titop island which was crap. Titop is a swimming island but it was so polluted and crowded that i didnt even want to go in, we were ready to leave after like 10 minutes which really shocked the guide. I think if he saw the beach we go to everyday hed understand why we were so unimpressed. The sunset that night was absolutely breathtaking, we sat up on the top of the boat and enjoyed many cocktails soaking it all in. Ha long bay is the second wonder of the world ive seen this trip and it totally held up! Easily one of the best sunsets of the trip, up there with the pyramids and the special athens hill. Im keen to go see more of the natural wonders now, imagine if theyre all this good!
After the sunset we got served a super yummy dinner, listened to the host sing karaoke, and then went squidding for a bit but didnt catch anything. The karaoke thing was weird coz the host just sang and then turned it off without letting anyone else have a shot. Mum and i were keen to do iris but had to do it on the balcony by ourselves afterwards ahaha.
The next day we went on another boat to do a day trip of activities. First we went to an "untouched" cave with a seat at the front and a footpath going through it, then we went canoeing to a lovely empty beach that looked like it was straight out of a postcard. When we stopped for lunch the staff opened up a gate on the top deck of the boat and said we were able to jump off and go for a swim!! One of the people on our tour was a pro cliff diver and he was doing some crazy cool stuff, i tried to copy him but didnt get very close ahaha :/ . After lunch we went to check out a pearl farm which was fascinating. Pearls are made from little bits of debris like sand getting stuck inside the membrane of an oyster and pearl farms make pearls by opening up oysters and surgically inserting little beads. We got to see a guy inseminting the oysters which was so sick. Highly recommend two nights in ha long bay, the day trip activities are so much better than the stuff on the overnight itinerary.Leia mais

Ninh Binh and Mai Chau (ninh binh 1)

The bus ride from ha long bay to ninh binh was 4 hours of pure mysery, it was so bumpy and the driver was being very erratic. Luckily when we arrived at the hotel it had just the thing to make everything ok again... a pool!! We had a grest evening swimming, drinking beers and eating yummy fried rice and spring rolls :).
We easily couldve spent the whole next day just laying about at the pool but we only had one day in nahn binh so we ended up deciding it would be more productive to do a tour. The tour took us to the Lying Dragon Mountain, canoeing on the trang an river and to check out some temples. We did the dragon mountain first because you need to walk up quite a lot of really steep steps and if we tried to do it in the middle of the day we wouldve been killed by the heat, even as it was we were still sweating profusely by the time we finished. The canoeing was super cool, we cruised through caves and into amazing valleys surrounded by tall, steep, lush mountains. We also canoed past the set where they filmed the new king kong movie which was so sick. They had a bunch of teepees built and statues of indigenous river people fishing and foraging on the banks, it was like we were floating through an acient civilisation.
After Ninh Binh we were off to Mai Chau. The hotel there had an even better pool which overlooked some rice fields. We spent a good amount time relaxing around the pool but also went for a very long bike ride. We rode around through small villages and rice farms, it was such a good ride with so many amazing views, it felt like we were riding in a scene from the secret life of walter mitty. This might end up being the highlight of Vietnam for me, i loved it.
We also checked out a cave in mai chau that was a lot smaller and tunnely than the rest weve seen. They use kids as the guides because some of the holes you need to fit through are proper small. Hopefully this trend of smaller caves the further south you go continues and i get to try some real claustrophobic caving coz i love those videos ahah.Leia mais

Da Nang

Our flight to da nang arrived after the sun had already set so my first experience of the city was at night. Da nang at night is so lively and vibrant, there're lights everywhere and huge hotels lining the coast with restaurants and bars everywhere, dad said it was pretty similar to the gold coast.
On our first day i woke up and was surprised to find that there was actually pretty decent surf! It was like shoulder high, consistent and alright shape for the most part. I didnt go out coz it was a bit fat and i didnt wanna get a chafe and sunburn from surfing in boardies. Our first activity was going to see the lady buddha statue at the end of the bay. The best thing about lady buddha was the monkeys that were sitting around checking each other for nits, they looked so chill it was awesome. In the evening we enjoyed some beers on our balcony and then went to a kinda fancy restaurant for dinner. The food was mostly really nice except for the coconut prawns that dad ordered with turned out to be just four unpeeled prawns sitting with their heads in a coconut, it was the most expensive thing we got... After dinner we went for a stroll along the beach and discovered a massage place / bar on the sand! This was exactly what i felt like to round off the day, we all got some beers and had a massage it was amazing :) (my first good massage of the entire year!!!).
The next day we went to an awesome vegan breakfast place for some porridge and power bowls. We ended up ordering heaps coz Mum and i were going to split a porridge so i asked for "another bowl" and they brought out a whole extra power bowl lol. Dad was so full after breaky he crashed at home while mum and i went for a walk along the river. On our way back we stopped for some banh mi which was sooo good, either the best of the trip or equal with the street ones in hanoi, still not as good as friendship tho. For dinner we went to the night markets which i absolutely loved. We roamed around trying a bunch of things including takoyaki, pancakes, some crispy prawn bowl things, dumplings and a squid on a stick. We also got some barbecued crayfish which we put in banh mi buns to eat which was heavenly. I absolutely loved the night markets, its was so hectic and hot but everything tasted so good and it was just the best energy. Best markets ive been to ever! Even better than the singapore ones! Afterwards we went to a bar and watched the dragon bridge breathe fire and spray out water, it was sick.Leia mais

Hue and hoi an (my last few days)

It was quite a rowdy train ride getting to Hue. Great ocean and jungle views but everyone on the train was super excited about being there and they were all talking loudly and moving around constantly to get pictures. I sat next to a very talkative 7 year old local which made the trip pretty fun. At one point he asked me how old mum and dad were and when i told him he said, "do they do good stuff? Coz if they do good stuff theyll have good luck and live longer!" (He was worried coz they were so old! Ahahaha).
We only had one night in Hue so we hired a tour guide to show us around. He took us along the perfume river (sitting inside a boat that was effectively just a big floating sauna) and to a few temples and pagodas but it was so hot that before long we had completely lost interest. We told the driver we were over the temples so he took us to an abandoned water park, an incense village and a great lookout spot over the river instead. All 3 of those things were awesome! The incense in the village smelled sooo good, I spent like 50 bucks. Hopefully im allowed to keep the incense through customs!! The view of the river spot reminded me heaps of gallipoli, same kind of pine trees and brown pine needle / woodchip dirt.
The next day we took a van to hoi an. We splurged a bit on the hoi an accommodation, the restort had a great pool so we spent the arvo swimming and drinking beers there. In the evening we walked to the lantern river for dinner. The river at night was so pretty, there were colourful lanterns everywhere and beautifully lit row boats cruising people around. People also sent wish candles down the river in colourful paper rafts so there were heaps of those twinkling along on the water.
The next morning we got up bright n early for a food market tour. We tried 46 different local foods and drinks which were mostly all really tasty and interesting. The most noteworthy thing for me was a medicinal clear goop drink made from boiling a special type of birds nest. Id seen something on tv about it, theres this one really tall cliff in vietnam where a special species of bird loves making nests for mating season, after mating season is over some crazy locals climb up on ridiculously tall and rickety bamboo ladders to collect all the nests that are left stuck on the cliff. The drink itself was alright, actually kinda yuck, i had to try not to think about the fact i was essentially drinking rehydrated bird vomit.
At night we went back to the lantern river to see the full moon festival which happens once a month but it was super rainy so we just got soaked and then came straight home.
Hoi an was the relaxing leg of our trip so that was about everything we did. Most of our time was spent at the pool. On our 3rd day we discovered the best bahn mi street kart ever!! Mum and i went, i had 3 and she had 2 and we were very very happy :)).
