  • Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park & Museum

    April 12, 2025 in Japan ⋅ ☀️ 14 °C

This morning we visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum which was built in 1995. It is a stunning place dedicated to documenting the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in World War II. It promotes peace and understanding, and is a true testament to the horrors of nuclear war and war itself. The experience was moving beyond words. We were happy to get the opportunity to ring the peace bell while visiting the park.Read more

  • Miyajima Island

    April 12, 2025 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

After a sobering morning it was nice to get away from the city and immerse ourselves in nature. We took a river boat to Miyajima Island and hiked to the top of Mt. Misen for some fabulous views. It is a sacred mountain where we came across many shrines, large and small, as well as several temples. It made the hike so interesting and it is amazing that the two religions can co-exist so harmoniously. The other highlight was the large Torii gate in the ocean. When we arrived it was surrounded by water and when we left it was low tide and you could walk right out to it. We got to savour some very large fresh oysters which are abundant here as they are farmed in the waters just off the island.Read more

Tram and train to our last stop in Japan, Fukuoka. It is known as the gateway to Asia due to its proximity to the Asian mainland. It offers diverse landscapes as it is near both mountains and the sea. This afternoon we visited the nearby Kushiro Shrine , the Tochoji Temple, the underground shopping mall, outdoor food arcade and then hopped on the subway to stroll through Ohori Park. The city is know for delicious ramen and we were able to attest to that fact this evening at dinner.Read more
