  • Two American Icons.

    May 15, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

Grateful for the shade as we make our way thru FDR and MLK’s memorial. So many of the quotes that adorn these monuments are still so poignant and applicable. Historical is rich, my friends! (Lisa and Chris went on to the Korean War monument - with the new section that lists those lost in that conflict).

Sweet spot to take a family pic with the Jefferson Memorial in the background.

  • I will survive!

    May 15, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 81 °F

Due to some events in town, our bus tour got really messed up and six of us had to Uber to get to walk around the FDR and MLK memorials. Where did that leave Chris? Renting a lime scooter! And living to tell about it!Read more

  • Julia is the best!

    May 15, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 79 °F

So grateful to connect with our dear friend Julia from Longview… And so proud of the work that she has done here in the State Dept. the last couple years. It was so fun being her youth pastor back in the day, and even more fun to see her thriving in her work in the present. Congrats on engagement and we are grateful for your friendship.Read more

  • Panda-monium!

    May 16, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 73 °F

It’s very cool to see the pandas in person here in DC. The weather got a lot hotter and definitely muggy, but that’s part of the experience. (Biiiiggg escalator from the Metro!)

  • The Best for Last? US History Museum

    May 16, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 88 °F

OK, OK… Most of our group was too tired today to totally take it all in, and we saw so many other great exhibits in DC, so we ultimately saved the last for last! Lots of cool items from Fozzy the Bear to Mr. Rogers shoes to Dorothy‘s Ruby slippers to the Star-Spangled Banner flag… On and on and on!

It was fun to return to our Airbnb and celebrate Nikki ‘s engagement and hear a bit about their wedding plans.

If you haven’t heard it before, we are blessed and so so grateful for this memorable trip.

    May 17, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 64 °F

Nikki and Lisa were the ones who got up early and took the metro in for a tour of Arlington. Here are some of their reflections about the morning….

It was special family time for the two of them! It’s important to have such a high regard for our military, and so so grateful for those who have served.Read more

  • The big finish! National Cathedral

    May 17, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 84 °F

It was very cool to see that the national Cathedral is a very active congregation. Today they were doing their kids day from 10 AM to 2 PM, so we got a close-up look at some of the cool ways that they engage the wider community as the people of faith. Chris had a really great conversation with Pastor Sallie, who is on staff and supporting the event today. Such a stunning experience… So glad that this is what we ended on!

Blown away by the “Space Window” - which has an actual rock from the moon embedded in it!

And there are making a LEGO replica of the cathedral! It will be as big as a mini van and visitors (including us) are making it happen. It’s been 3 years already and they think 5-7 more! It will be the biggest cathedral model in the world. Cool to help out.

  • Finally!!! North Dakota!!

    May 17, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☀️ 84 °F

We’ve been playing the License Plate Game for 24 days now and finally found our last plate - North Dakota! (When we left SoCal 2 weeks ago, we were only missing 5 states! Ouch!)

Funny thing, when we went to bed tonight, we already had 23 states for the next round!

BTW, check out this art we saw in the Portrait Museum. It’s the Preamble of the Constitution using state license plates. Astonishing!!

  • “Seahawks suck!” - Brotherly Love!

    May 17, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ☁️ 81 °F

OK, so there is not much love between NFC Bird teams in the NFL! Chris wore his Seahawks shirt on purpose today, and had some fun interactions with Folks. One man, without any eye contact or sense of joking, simply blurted out, “ Seahawks suck!” as he kept storming by.

Fandom in Philly is living up to its reputation! (at least the Philly Phanic did not talk smack to me!)

Joey’s response: “Tastes like stroganoff!” And gave it a 7.6 rating

Nikki’s response: “So so good, but also very filling!” She gave a 7.5 rating.

Chris thinks he’ll be tasting the onions for days! Easily an 8.0 rating!

Ah, the taste of brotherly love!

  • All come to look for America…

    May 18, 2025 in the United States ⋅ ⛅ 72 °F

Traveled through several states today, finally on the New Jersey Turnpike, which of course made us think of Simon & Garfunkel song “America!”

Texting with my jersey friend “Guido” (Jeff Jordan) and getting travel and food advice. Tollbooths and center of the freeway service stations are pretty new to us!Read more
