  • A real God appointment

Chris had a great time over corned beef hash breakfast with a friend from College, Tony Raffin. In a miraculous kind of way, 18 months ago Chris and Tony reconnected sitting one row apart from each other at an Ohio State football game!

Of course, the reason that we all got so chatty in November 2024 was because Chris’s late cousin Carrie was the master conversationalist!

Tony and Chris played football together in 1990 at Capital university, but hadn’t talked to each other in 30+ years .

But this morning, as they talked, they realize that God makes these connections happen in his time… Lots of encouragement together in his ministry as a fire chief, and in Chris’s ministry as a pastor.

    Grateful!

  • Rock On!!

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame here in Cleveland turned it all the way up to 11! Joey even tried it on the base for a little bit, but we weren’t quite ready for the live show! Maybe next time…. (Chris was close to playing a guitar solo….)

Too much memorabilia to post here, but we've shared a couple of examples: Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac’s black dress, the Eagles Don Felder double neck guitar used in “Hotel California,” Kurt Cobain from Nirvana’s busted guitar, and outfits from Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift. (Just a drop in the bucket, of course.)

Also, there’s a section to jam with musicians from the Hall - and these high schoolers were killing it!

  • “ Can your son name two Beatles?” Haha

    21. toukokuuta 2025, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☁️ 61 °F

“Are you kidding me?” I responded. We had a great conversation with Bill, who has worked at the Hall of Fame for eight years. He then gave us commemorative coins made in 1964, but never given out because they didn’t have permission from the Beatles. Ultimately, Yoko Ono got them and passed them onto the Hall of Fame… And employees give them out to Beatles fans.

    Glad we are Beatles fans!

Enjoyed the 30 minute video about all 13 of the Beatles albums.

  • Oh, Cleveland…be kind to yourself!

    21. toukokuuta 2025, Yhdysvallat ⋅ 🌧 64 °F

Cleveland hosted us well for a day, offered Erie views from the water’s edge, the Rock and Roll Hall, and some good laughs with its self-deprecating humor!

We really had it all here! The Browns stadium, the Guardians (formerly Indians) stadium - here seen behind the “guardians” statues on the Hope Bridge, pouring rain, wildlife…everything!

We wanted to post mock-tourism commercials from 15 years ago, but they weren’t totally appropriate!). Cya next time CLE!

  • Bucyrus=Family!

    22. toukokuuta 2025, Yhdysvallat ⋅ 🌬 50 °F

Both of Chris’s parents grew up here and Chris was born. Just one town over and Marion (and he lived five of his first six years as a little kid in this tiny town of less than 15,000 people).

Thanks for the bratwurst and burgers! Good visit and LOVE ya Aunt Debbie and Uncle Jeff, Aunt Vicki, and cousins Aimee, Randy and Kaden! (This are Gma Jennie’s sisters. The WAGNER side of our family tree.)

On the Lyons’ side, Joey was surprised to see this picture with Gpa Roger (Chris’s dad) as the youngest in this picture.

These old black n white pictures…unreal!

The first picture has Chris’s dad Roger in the glasses and his brother Charlie two kids over.

Chris’s grandmother Lyons, Harriet, was confirmed in 1922! All 10 Lyons kids were found in their confirmation photos - as well as cousin Amber’s family!

Legacy is the word that comes to mind.

Included here is the Lyons family with nine kids, Chris’s dad Roger is the baby. (Aunt Sandy wasn’t born yet.)

  • Paying our respects

    22. toukokuuta 2025, Yhdysvallat ⋅ 🌙 48 °F

Joey told cousin Amber that he wasn’t the biggest fan of visiting cemeteries, but he was a real trooper to spend a chunk of our tour of Bucyrus time paying our respects.

Most of our photographs of gravestones are not posted here, but Chris’s dad Roger - and most of his family- are buried here at Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sulphur Springs Ohio.

It’s an idyllic spot…. Grateful for the time to visit (and the old church contains one of Chris’s favorite Stainglass renditions of the Good Shepherd.)

  • Proud of our Family Veterans

    22. toukokuuta 2025, Yhdysvallat ⋅ 🌙 48 °F

Chris’ dad Roger served in Vietnam in ‘67-‘68 (even got a Purple Heart for being wounded), so our family has been so inspired by how this little town in Ohio seeks to honor veterans.

Near the turn of the millennium, several murals were painted by an artist from the Pacific Northwest, including this picture that includes a couple of hundred veterans faces from the local area.

Four of Roger’s five brothers also served in the military, as did grandpa Ed Wagner and uncle Ron Wagner.

We are proud that their service is not forgotten.

    22. toukokuuta 2025, Yhdysvallat ⋅ 🌧 52 °F

Joey got quite an education about this tiny Ohio town in Crawford County. Old farm houses, old stories, old tractors, and barns… at least it was sweetened with some sweet treats from Miller’s drive-in (where grandma Jennie worked as a teenager!)

Joey loved their homemade root beer!

These are pics of the houses that Chris lived in - or his folks.

  • The Crazy Fox Saloon (and Al Capone)

    22. toukokuuta 2025, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☁️ 54 °F

All of these stories are true… so I am told.

During prohibition, the Crazy Fox Saloon was known as the….. and it was frequented by Al Capone, since Bucyrus was a half way stop between Chicago and New York.

Below the hotel was a speakeasy, with tunnels that went under the road so that Folks could escape a raid by the cops quickly.

One of the managers gave us a tour of the speakeasy, encouraging Joey and Chris to sit in Al Capone’s booth and sharing about the hauntings that happened in the building.

It was truly the best end to our “Tour of Bucyrus” that we could’ve hoped for!

NOTE: While the modern day Crazy Fox might be a bit iffy by some standards (we really couldn’t take pictures in the bar itself due to some graphic content, again this is a PG show!), it sure has a lot of character!

A dozen years ago when we were back to have Chris’s dad’s memorial service here, we ended that day with some brilliant karaoke in the Crazy Fox. (many people still comment on their rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody that Chris and his brother Tom busted out!)

PS: it is presently for sale, so Chris is doing some vocational discernment…JK!

Just to prove that there are frenemies in family that can get along, Chris and Cousin Ron can wear rivalry gear and still give a hug! (This is the Lyons side of the Family Tree.)

Thanks to Bev and Dave for hosting us for dinner and games and laughter.

So nice to be with Amber’s BF Brian (who has a sweet ‘76 AMC Matador) and B’s daughter Abbey (who just completed 6th grade today.).

Though we lost the game, Abbey was a good guesser with Chris’s epic dance moves!

Can’t wait to be with you all again soon.

  • Not Cincy, but…

    24. toukokuuta 2025, Yhdysvallat ⋅ ☁️ 57 °F

Joey and Chris tried some Skyline Chili (a Midwest delicacy normally found in Cincinnati, Ohio)… but we discovered it in Fort Wayne, Indiana! Our dear friends, Vanessa and Logan Carrigan used to call this place home, so we stretched ourselves to have the pasta and bean and chili sauce and cheese mixture.

    Report card? Solid C+

We are pretty sad, Logan, that there are no more Waffle Houses in our future on this trip!
