Jen & Jonnell arrive in Tassie

    April 6, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 19 °C

Jen and Jonnell arrive in Launceston from Sydney on the only plane, in the history of plane arrivals, that arrives early and has not been delayed. Well done Virgin!!!
Picked up by Kath, they are whisked up the Tamar Valley, past the vineyards laden with grapes - awaiting their harvest. They arrive at Clarence Point and are greeted by a 'cut snake' draped over the front post and an over-excited Tashi.Read more

  • Buns in the Oven

    April 7, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌧 17 °C

Good Friday and all the good people are doing good!!! The highlight of today was Kath and Jonnell whipping up a bunch of home made Hot Cross Buns. Simply delicious. Special ingredient included brandied fruit mince left over from Christmas.
The crosses on top were exquisitely crafted to reflect all the shapes and sizes of those who consumed them.

  • Penguins at Low Head

    April 8, 2023 in Australia ⋅ 🌬 12 °C

With Steve, Hamish, Ben and Millie in tow we rugged and layered up to face the cold and brisk winds coming directly off Bass Strait. Up to Low Head we ventured, to watch the Fairy Penguins* come in to sleep for the night. What an amazing experience - watching them slide over the rocks, waddle up the beach and listening to their array of sounds, including their 'love calls'. Sending the sacrificial young male to first navigate and scout for danger is equivalent to nominating them for the Darwin Awards!

*Tasmania is the only place they are still called Fairy penguins.

  • Midlands Highway to Hobart

    April 11, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Today we began our road trip and of course appropriate names were selected for the journey - Thelma (Kath), Louise (Jonnell) and Eliza (Jen). First stop was Campbell Town where purchases were made at the Lake and Leather shop. Then off to Ross for our first Scallop Pie. Ross is made up of incredible Georgian sandstone buildings. Oatlands was the next detour off the highway. Another small town made up of Georgian buildings. Eliza (Jen) found a stork sculpture on the top of one building. Then off to Hobart via a tour of Thelma's (Kath) stomping grounds on the Eastern Shore and then down to Sue's at Blackmans Bay - south of Hobart.Read more

  • Mt Field National Park

    April 13, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 22 °C

Off through the Derwent Valley to Mt Field National Park. Today was 'Bucket List' day for Jen. Jonnell was perplexed why we were going such a long way just to see a plant! Well ... it wasn't just any old plant, it was Nothofagus gunnii - a deciduous beech found only in Alpine areas in Tasmania. Having local knowledge on our side (Sue) - we found it in its glory at Lake Fenton. It was just starting to change colour.
We also walked around Lake Dobson through the ferns and pandani forest and also to Russell Falls.

  • East Coast - Barilla Bay Oysters

    April 14, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 17 °C

Early morning start - hoping to head up Mount Wellington (Kununyi) - she hadn't showed her head all the time we were in Hobart. The cloud cover was gradually moving away so we headed to Battery Point for breakfast at Jackson & McCross. Still no luck - the cloud remained so the decision was made to keep heading up the East Coast. First stop, much to Jen's delight and much salivation, was Barilla Bay Oysters where Kath and Jen shared a dozen freshly shucked oysters.Read more

  • Orford to Swansea to St Helens

    April 14, 2023 in Australia ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

After the gardens we reached the East Coast at Orford. Then it was up to Swansea for lunch at The Horny Crab - unfortunately the seafood wasn't as scrummy as we had hope it would be. Our destination for the night was St Helens. The Bayside Hotel was nestled on the main street and our window opened onto a balcony that overlooked the bay. Great meal at The Wharf.Read more
