Gateway to New England

Made it to Connecticut this week in the pouring rain. I actually enjoyed hiking in the rain — maybe it’s the Pacific Northwest in me. I also enjoyed walking .5 off trail to Tony’s Deli, where I could wait out some of the rain with an egg bagel sandwich and coffee. I use an app called FarOut that tells you about the hiker-friendly delis, meaning they don’t mind backpacks and will let you use the restroom, throw out your trash, charge your phones etc. (Tony’s had good food too including an eggplant sandwich I packed for later.)

The last part of NY and the first part of CT have been beautiful. Lots of variety of trail, a million songbirds. And I am starting to see more evergreens.

Thank you all for your support with your comments and texts. The reality is I am slower than most folks out there. I’ve always been slow and steady, and never a sprinter. But I’ve learned if you get up everyday and start walking north, you will make progress!Read more
