    Mount Moosilauke

    25 июня 2024 г., Соединенные Штаты ⋅ ☁️ 72 °F

I entered the much anticipated White Mountains in New Hampshire, starting with Mount Moosilauke. The mountain, about 4,800’, is at the southwestern end of the range. I felt strong going up the mountain and was thrilled to get above treeline on a perfectly sunny day. Most of the Appalachian Trail is in a “green tunnel,” meaning you are nearly always in the woods. The woods are beautiful but I have sometimes missed the expansive views we get in the PNW.

Coming down from Mount Moosilauke was a more challenging — the trail was steep and bouldery for several miles. I stepped gingerly and slowly. My thighs are still feeling it!

I have to admit I was not familiar with the Whites before I started researching through Appalachian Trail. Turns out the White Mountains are extremely popular with lots of trails and indoor pay-to-stay huts run by the Appalachian Mountain Club. I started counting the number of folks I saw as I was nearing the top of Mount Moosilauke. At first I was surprised to count around 20 unique people, because I often only see about 5 people on the trail each day. I gave up counting because I am sure the number was exceeding 50, including what looked like summer camp groups.

Before Moosilauke, I had a relatively easy day through gentle terrain, including Mt. Mist. I loved it because I could take my time. Too often, I become preoccupied with how many miles I am going, or how fast or slow I am going. This day reminded me of the primary reason I am doing this — it just feels so great to be in the woods away from the “real” world!
