  • Day 23: Oboke Gorges + Belgian family

    April 8, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Running against the rain: waking up early and cycling fast to avoid the rain forecasted for the afternoon☔️. Of course we didn’t 😅 but at least only the very last part of the trip was a bit wet. Zoé lost her “Pepe” 🐑 on the way… But she found again her favorite blanket inside the bags we sent from Tokushima to today’s hotel a few days ago (thanks Yamato 🐈‍⬛)! We finally met again with our Belgian friends who are cycling around Asia with two toddlers 💓. Just on time to celebrate the 2yrs old birthday of their daughter Robyn. We will be sharing a part of the road together !!Read more

  • Day 24: We’ve doubled!

    April 9, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 10 °C

Our family*2 = More fun & smoothness! Why? Kids are neutralizing each others, which means that parents can breathe 🤪
We found a lot of super nice & cute 🥰 new friends/babysitters/football instructors in the playground and a more technological one, serving the dinner 🤖. Zoe has a new “pada”🐼
and Ellie a new rear luggage rack.. Her bicycle will maybe be fully equipped by the end of the trip..

  • Day 26: Shimanami kaido 🌉

    April 11, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 13 °C

We did half of Shimanami Kaido, the most famous cycling path in Japan, cycling from islands to islands via huge bridges over the Seto inland Sea. Beautiful Nature and impressive concrete. We saw more cyclists today than we will do in our whole trip. Citrus trees everywhere 🍋Read more

  • Day 27: Bridges to Heaven & Space

    April 12, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

After shimanami kaido, we turned west and cycled the Tobishima kaido that spans a network of seven bridges across seven islands to Kure. In the middle, we reached an unexpected heaven with sand beach, clear (and cold) water, onsen, and a closeby observatory: looking at the stars and the moon is always fascinating🤩Read more

  • Day 29: Hiroshima

    April 14, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

“I want to go out of this museum” says Lorenzo. Ringing some bells 🔔 of peace inside the beautiful Peace memorial park after visiting the museum. The Children’s peace monument is surrounded by origami cranes like the shape of the bell clapper. Hiroshima is a beautiful and lively city and without its impressive A-bomb Dome, we could almost believe that nothing has ever happened here…Goodbye Bertrand it was nice to have you with us 😊Read more

  • Day 30: Floating Torii

    April 15, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Itsukushima (the island popularly known as Miyajima) and its shrine with the famous floating Torii (gate). It was so inspiring that each one of us expressed himself in different ways in front of it 😂 An island full of deers moving freely around tourists. Did you know that they like eating Sakura flowers? By chance in the rainy afternoon we ended up in a ryokan facing the famous Kintai Bridge (錦帯橋, Kintai-kyō), an historical wooden arch bridge, in the city of Iwakuni, beautiful!Read more

  • Day 31: Kyushu, the last chapter

    April 16, 2024 in Japan ⋅ 🌙 16 °C

As we planned to do around 50k we didn’t take the time to take a lot of pictures but, instead, we could get into the ferry heading to Kyushu on time! The last third of our trip is now starting: time is really flying! Getting off the ferry, the host of our ryokan came to pick us up by surprise 💓 so we could skip the last 7 steep km in the dark 🙏 Thank you also for the little toy cars !Read more

  • Day 32: up in the Kunisaki Peninsula

    April 17, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

A - not so - short stop by the beautiful art & coffee (needed!) Touinryo gallery before heading to ascending roads in the Kunisaki peninsula. 100% in the middle of the nature (we didn’t see a single 7/11 or Family Mart!). Even in the camping up to the hills we were the only ones. And some deers! The only human being (apart the receptionist) who was just passing by was a ex pro marathoner to whom we asked some information about the close-by observatory… Unfortunately too many clouds but a really impressive telescope! 🔭Read more

  • Day 33: Shaking to Hell

    April 18, 2024 in Japan ⋅ 🌙 13 °C

After a great night in the company of a quite intense earthquake, we are ready to reach Beppu! Known for its eight major geothermal hot spots, sometimes referred to as the "eight hells of Beppu" 👹and the large number of crocodiles 🐊😱 Lucky lunch break, where a kind woman who loves roses 🌹, accepted us in her home made cosy restaurant. Lucky day also for Zoé, not only she felt down in the foot onsen 💦😂, but she found a new friend 🐒Read more

  • Day 34: Family onsen before the hills

    April 19, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

Family onsen in Beppu before heading to Yufuin. Beautiful road: in spite of a bit of traffic (and of important elevation gain in the first part), the long descent and the greenery around was a well-deserved reward 🏆. Yufuin, that we had never heard about before arriving 🫣, was surprisingly touristical, mainly non-Japanese Asians (don’t ask us from where exactly :)). Still a nice laid back village!Read more

  • Day 35: from Comico to steep climbs

    April 20, 2024 in Japan ⋅ 🌧 13 °C

Visiting the Comico Museum designed by Kuma Kengo with some artworks of Yayoi Kusama 🐞and the big “Your dog” 🐩 by Yoshitomo Nara.
Then up up up, fast fast fast before the rain starts (of course we couldn’t totally avoid it). First time since Fuji-san that Pierre had to attach the cart to his bike because Ellie’s e-bike’s battery level got very low 😓. Arriving at the end of the sunset, but thanks to Japan we landed on our feet this time again: a good hotel booked only a few hours before, with a nice dinner 🥘Read more

  • Day 36:reaching Aso caldeira in the rain

    April 21, 2024 in Japan ⋅ 🌧 19 °C

The objective of the day was to finish the road 11 that we started two days ago, and to reach the caldeira of Aso, one of the largest in the world, and home to many nice volcanos. What we were not expecting was that it would be raining cats and dogs. After reaching the pass, we had a little break from the rain 🌧️ and could have a very view of the hills and of animal plant sculptures. It was short… 😅 Lucky to find last minute the comfortable and deserved Tsukasa Villa park hotel & spa, with kids pool, onsen 👘 & warm dinner 🥘Read more

  • Day 37: Aso volcanos & its craters

    April 22, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 15 °C

No rain today! « Siamo contenti! 😁 » even though we might not see a lot with the clouds all around. And it would be a pity because today’s target: the beautiful Aso volcanos 🌋. Just a “little” bit of steep climb (11km) and we arrive at the top in the total fog…. But after lunch, the miracle happens and the sky slowly gets clearer! Of course the 700m elevation gain were not enough, we hiked until Mount Kishima-dake (Lorenzo too, good job! But we promised a big ice cream!). Riding down we bumped into Komesuka, the inverted rice bowl, for Ellie a pandoro shape and for Pierre la butte du Lion without lion (chacun ses repères).Read more

  • Day 38: Kumamoto city concrete&rain

    April 24, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 18 °C

Very draining day in the suburbs of Kumamoto through concrete, big roads, traffic and a bit of rain 🌧️ but we found a new friend for Zoé, a yummy watermelon and a comfortable bed.

  • Day 39: reaching nature again!

    April 24, 2024 in Japan ⋅ 🌙 15 °C

Sunny again and a second day in the suburbs of Kumamoto, finally reaching Nature again! Very warm welcome of an old lady in a beautiful old house but not a super yummy dinner 😅 with a weird pinky sausage! However we prefer this combination (warmth & less comfort vs indifference of the more comfortable business hotel of the previous day).Read more

  • Day 40: Along Kumagawa

    April 25, 2024 in Japan ⋅ 🌩️ 19 °C

Beautiful “emerald road” along kumagawa river, despite some works on the way (still fixing the road after the 2020 floods…). We cycled a lot of kilometers at ease, it seems we found a good rhythm! Nice stops visiting a cave 👀, and a wonderful train museum. Sleeping in Oganoyado ryokan (booked with the help of yesterday's minshuku owner) in Hitoyoshi, small city where the famous manga character Natsume Yujin-Chuo is still living!Read more

  • Day 41: Art & Nothing else :)

    April 26, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 17 °C

Cycling under the rain in the morning and a yummy lunch at an Italian restaurant. Public kids library stop! Nice guest house (横川kito) in a very remote tiny village where there is nothing more than this super nice guest house&cafe, an onsen and a supermarket. It was renovated in the framework of a rehabilitation plan to attract more tourists. Lorenzo (helped a bit by his mother 😏) could paint 🎨something on the wall of our bedroom 😍Read more

  • Day 42: Kagoshima we made it!

    April 28, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

There is nothing to say more than: We made it (on time)! What a journey… Days were so intense (in all possible meanings 😝) that we sometimes couldn’t remember what we had done the same morning but… it will be nice to have a look at the pictures comfortably from home 😇.For now, some relaxing time on a beach with view on Sakurajima before reaching the hotel...Read more

  • Day 43: 100views of Sakurajima& bye bike

    April 28, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Little break in Sakurajima where we enjoyed the 100 views of this active and impressive volcano island 🌋 and a dinosaurs playground (but no nice beach unfortunately...). In the late afternoon we tried to send our bikes 🚴 to Tokyo… We found one big box 📦 that Pierre carried through Kagoshima 😂 and the hotel kindly arranged for us the shipping via Yamato, but… [to be continued…]Read more

  • Yakushima / part2

    May 2, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Meeting with a French guy (friend of friends) living in Yakushima and a splash in the sea! Then rushing for the bus to do an onsen next to the sea. At the end of the day (we decided to leave the island one day earlier), a very kind Japanese woman living in the island proposed to give us a lift to see all what we couldn’t admire of the island (by bus was a bit challenging): waterfalls, monkeys, impressive banyan trees,…Read more

  • Days: 48-49 Fukuoka

    May 4, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ⛅ 25 °C

Meeting up with Haruka, Simon, Kai and Sara in Fukuoka !! They were with us the first day of this long journey and the last one too! Zoé took advantage of Sara’s stroller, she has probably been missing one 😂 In the afternoon the Dontaku a “matsuri” festival and a super nice dinner in this local Italian restaurant kindly suggested by Tomoko 😋.Read more

  • Day 50: Going back to Tokyo

    May 5, 2024 in Japan ⋅ ☁️ 22 °C

Going back to Tokyo with … one extra bike (the hotel in Kagoshima could not send the big box with the bicycle at the end 😂). By the end of this journey:
    • Zoé could finally show with fingers she is 2 years old and can take pictures with a phone by herself. She lost 3 stuffies but not (yet) Pochaman.
    • Pierre is 2 years older than Ellie. He is able to change a ferry reservation by phone in Japanese. He still has to tell Lorenzo the never ending story of Stephanie on the bike to school🚴.
    • Ellie reached her family quota of beach/sea of the year 😭. She is now an absolute master of Japanese hotel reservation websites.
    • Lorenzo never wanted to leave every single place and now he is sooo happy to come back home! He is back to school and everyone is happy, his parents included 😝. The label of Tiger 🐯, his stuffy, enters entirely in his nose. He knows how to unlock our phones and watch the photos by himself (or with his sister).
    • We all became experts of Yamato and Sagawa shipping delivery, especially the kids
