    13 November 2017, Israel ⋅ ⛅ 21 °C

    This morning I read from Job and was struck by the amazing power of God.
    Job is responding to some really poor counsel from people who are trying to explain his suffering to him. Their main point seems to be that Job has sinned therefore God is punishing him. Could God do that? Would God do that?
    Of course it's possible, but not in Job's case. God was doing something else. Job had neither sinned nor failed God.
    What is striking in Job is his repeated recognition of God's sovereign power. In Job 12:7-10 we read:

    7 "But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you;
    8 or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you.
    9 Who among all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?
    10 In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind."

    Job understood that while we may not understand why thing happen or what is actually happening around us, we can always understand who controls all things.

    As we read and talked about Israel's struggle with faithfulness yesterday, I was reminded of how much we are like Israel as God's people. We forget who we should follow. We often break covenant with God

    We are also like Job's friends. We give bad advice.

    In spite of all of my shortcomings God keeps the covenant.

    Today may we be like the rest of creation saying:

    Who among all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.

    Boker Tov!!!

    We are up and getting ready for another amazing day.

    1 John 3:16–18

    [16] By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. [17] But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him? [18] Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. (ESV)

    After reading this earlier today, I was reminded of all that Christ has done for us. He has ransomed his people to make us a living sacrifice for Him. We are saved into His church to take the life saving message of help wherever we go.

    We will visit many sites today where Christ showed us how to "lay down our lives" in tangible ways.

    May God be honored today and may I learn more about how to lay my life down for others.

  • Open the gates

    17 November 2017, Israel ⋅ ☀️ 21 °C

    I read from Ezekiel 44 this morning and noticed that in the vision Ezekiel is told that no Gentile will enter into the Jerusalem. It brought to mind a passage we rea from Galatians a couple of days ago.

    It reads:
    Galatians 3:23 Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed.
    24 So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.
    25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian,
    26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.
    27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
    28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
    29 And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise. - Galatians 3:23-29

    It is mind boggling to think that we are now included in all of these promises. God's chosen people is now folks from every tribe and tongue. Incredible!

    Paul reading to us Philippians 2 in the theater at Beth Shean. Christ came and emptied himself. Christ humbled himself. He willingly gave his life. God exalted him above everything else.

    We are in a city with toppled gods everywhere and an empire that faded.

    Christ has conquered!

  • Gethsemane

    19 November 2017, Palestina ⋅ ⛅ 15 °C

    As we sat in the garden of Gethsemane yesterday, I read Isaiah 53. I was overwhelmed by the fact that Christ went to the cross for us while we were his enemies. He gave his life as a ransom for many. he asked God to remove the cup of His wrath, but God did not. Christ yielded his life to atone, for cover our sins.

    Isaiah 53:10–12

    [10] Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him;
    he has put him to grief;
    when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
    he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days;
    the will of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.
    [11] Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
    by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
    make many to be accounted righteous,
    and he shall bear their iniquities.
    [12] Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,
    and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,
    because he poured out his soul to death
    and was numbered with the transgressors;
    yet he bore the sin of many,
    and makes intercession for the transgressors. (ESV)

    He became sin who knew no sin so that we might become the righteousness of God.

    What a great privilege to sit in the garden yesterday and go directly to God in prayer based upon Christ atoning work on the cross.
