  • Day 13 Amber (Amer) Fort P1

    November 6, 2024 in India ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

We took a bus to Amber Fort (pronounced Amer). The fort itself is impressive. As we pulled into the parking lot, we saw a few snake charmers with hooded cobras. To get up to the fort, we rode in Mahindra Jeeps—I’ve never seen so many in one place. The fort sits on a lower slope and was the King’s residence, while the actual fortifications are higher up. There’s a tunnel connecting the palace to the upper fort, allowing the King a quick escape if needed. We explored a bit of the tunnel, but it only went about 100 meters.

  • Day 13 Shopping and TukTuk Ride

    November 6, 2024 in India ⋅ 🌙 29 °C

On our way back from the Fort, we stopped by a jewelry shop. It was very interesting and the entrance was decorated with stones unfit for sale, looked very good. Back at the hotel We headed out looking for an ATM and stumbled across a wine and beer shop (of course) along the way. Unfortunately, our travel credit card didn’t work, and we were short on cash. The owner kindly offered to take me to the nearest ATM on his scooter—an experience in itself. After stocking up on drinks, we headed back to the hotel. Later, we took a TukTuk ride to the local mall, which turned out to be quite an adventure.

  • Day 14 - Around Jaipur

    November 7, 2024 in India ⋅ ☀️ 24 °C

Today, we visited a textile factory that I didn’t expect to find interesting—but it turned out to be impressive. It’s not a typical factory; it’s part of a government-funded program aimed at reducing farmer suicides during droughts. Before the program, around 4,000 farmers had taken their lives, but since it started, that number has dropped to zero in four years. The manager, who has lived in Sydney since 96 spends three months a year back here to oversee it and expand it.

The factory helps local communities by teaching them to make carpets or do block printing, providing tools, equipment, and a guaranteed market for their textiles. It’s designed as a source of extra income rather than a replacement for farming. It reminded me of a ‘work-for-welfare’ model. They even produce camel-hair carpets and are working with the Northern Territory government to teach Indigenous communities to gather camel hair—generating income by catching and releasing camels after shearing.

We couldn’t resist buying a carpet runner; it was about a third of what we’d pay in Australia and is stain- and dirt-proof. They gave a great demo. We didn’t expect many sales from our tour, but around 20 people ended up buying rugs, some as large as 3m x 4m, with shipping to Australia included.

One room had bed sheets and clothing.
They also had a Sikh demonstrating wearing a Turban. He was very funny. They had high-quality, hand-block-printed cotton sheets at great prices. Naturally, we stocked up there too.

In the afternoon, we strolled back to the wine shop (more of a beer and spirits shop), enjoyed a few drinks, and returned to the hotel for a relaxing end to the day.”

  • Day 16 Taj Mahal P1

    November 9, 2024 in India ⋅ ☀️ 18 °C

Early start this morning, arriving at the entrance to the Taj Mahal by 6 a.m., but it was already packed. They have some interesting rules: phones and SLR cameras are allowed, but no GoPros or selfie sticks. I couldn’t even bring in my Insta360.”

  • Day 16 Red Fort P1

    November 9, 2024 in India ⋅ ☀️ 31 °C

Visited the Agra Red Fort this afternoon. It is massive. This is the Fort/Palace that was home to the Peacock Throne which had the Koh I Noor diamond in it. This diamond is now in the UK Crown Jewels. Unfortunately Red Fort like Taj Mahal do not allow Selfie Sticks or GoPro type cameras.

  • Day 19 Thats a Wrap

    November 12, 2024 in the United Arab Emirates ⋅ 🌙 27 °C

Long flight home, and now back at the hotel. Heading up to Canberra tomorrow.

The Trip-a-Deal tour was intense and packed with activities. Would I do it again? Absolutely. It takes all the planning and research out of the equation, making it easy to just enjoy the trip. I’d call it a 4-star holiday—some things didn’t go exactly as expected, but that’s travel for you.

A great addition was the Insta360 x4 camera. It’s a game changer for taking holiday videos and photos, especially with the extendable selfie stick.

Looking forward to being home tomorrow!
