  • Arriving at Bogen Bay

    September 1, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

Just arriving in Bogen Bay, onEllesmere Island, the striations are so clear and pattered and the glaciers are amazing

We’ve been drifting along the Eastern shoreline for over two hours and have been overwhelmed with Narwhales, Beluga Whales, Seals and Polar Bears one of which swam past the ship giving us a very close once over, a very curious bear indeed!

Sadly the mother and cub I saw turned out to be a stone which cost me a bottle of Whiskey!

  • No Name Inlet

    September 1, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ 1 °C

Arrived at No Name Inlet (possibly called Makinson Inlet), which is West of Boger Bay and beyond Bowman Island...the continuation of this Inlet could lead us to Vendom Fjord but that’s just a guess on my part

A trip out on the Zodiacs is planned and hopefully we’ll get to see something, or other, close up and personal but at least some amazing ice architecture!

The difficulty in being here is that a land so stark and desolate can be so beautiful

  • Philpots Island

    September 3, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ☁️ 2 °C

We’re in Bethune Inlet just off Queen Bay the Island is quite barren but off our port side there is a huge glacier which deserves some investigation

We spent the morning out on the Zodiacs, we saw Walrus on the rocks and sitting in the shallows for a while before moving onto a breakwater and watching Arctic Terns feeding which was lively and sadly difficult to photo after which we spent circling the icebergs and glacier, which was quite a size

Our Zodiac Pilot was Tua a really lovely guy who’s from the Cook Islands and who’s giving a lecture this afternoon on, ‘Viking and Polynesians - Early Day Explorers’ (Voyaging and Navigation)

We departed Philpots Island at 12:30 for Bucane Bay heading into Lancaster Sound, ‘Silver Cloud’ is some 12 miles off our starboard and we headed into a misty sea which has now (16:48) become quite heavy so little to see out there

    September 5, 2019, Baffin Bay ⋅ ⛅ 5 °C

Crossing Baffin Bay heading for Hullissat - heading 113

Very calm with a slight swell but good visibility and maybe, with some luck, we may spot a whale, or two!

  • Illulissat

    September 5, 2019 in Greenland ⋅ ⛅ 2 °C

Quite a palaver this morning as Explorer had to use her engines, and a couple of Zodiacs, to move an Iceberg which was blocking the quayside, after much manoeuvring it eventually allowed itself to be guided out into the harbour mouth...Read more

  • Crossing Baffin Bay

    September 5, 2019 in Canada ⋅ ⛅ -2 °C

So calm apart from a some swell here and there...we have seen Gulls and Auks and a distant ship but little else, must’ve been an awesome experience for wooden ship sailors to have no idea of where, or if, they would see land again!Read more
