Today we travelled into the highlands of Santa Cruz to visit El Chato and learn all about the giant tortoises! Our guide was fantastic and taught us all so much about the tortoises! The males are bigger than the females and have longer tails. The tortoises lose the rings on their shells as they age, eventually becoming smooth! We saw three huge males, Goliath was the biggest, 175 years old and weighing 300kg!! It's crazy to think if the kids came back to visit in 20 years time many of the tortoises would still be there, they can live to 200!!!
We enjoyed a break from the intense equatorial sun exploring the lava tunnels, fascinating!!Read more
