  • Terrible Thames, a Horrible History tour

    May 25, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 20 °C

Today was really fun. We went to Waterstones, which is a British bookshop, and I bought 5 books.
We met up with some friends for lunch. They were the family of Mama's old clients from when she was a nanny. Their names were Casper, Jennifer, John, Claudia, Willow, and Rosa. We had ice-cream and then went to a park with them.
We then went to a surprise. It was a show called "Terrible Thames", an adaption from the British TV Show "Horrible Histories", one of my favourites. The show took place on a boat on the river Thames! It had a cast of two people, a teacher and a student called Billy. They told us all about the river, and stuff on the river bank. At the end I bought a book of it. I managed to get it signed by the two actors.
    See you tomorrow

  • Frameless and The Gunpowder Plot

    May 26, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Today we went to an immersive art experience. It had all the classic art works, like The Scream, Starry Night, and The Persistence Of Memory. There were four rooms, which all had a different theme. One had artworks about the world around us, while another was abstract. My favourite room was interactive and was called Colour in Motion. There were screens on the ground and walls, which showed paintings. But every now and then, the artworks turned into dots, which went on to the floor, and when you walked, the dots parted.
We then went back to the hotel room, and Mama and Papa had a sleep.
We went back outside, and went to the underground, which we took to Tower Hill. When we got there we went and did a Interactive escape room like experience about the Gunpowder Plot. "Remember, Remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and a plot. I see no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot". The Gunpowder Plot was an attempt to blow up parliament and King James the 1st in 1605 by the Catholics to bring an end to the Church of England . With the help of VR, we escaped from the Tower of London in a zipline with a chair. We then saved a Priest and helped with the plot. We met Guy Fawkes, who was the person who was found about to light the fuse. He was played by Tom Felton, who is the same person who plays Draco Malfoy from Harry Potter. My parents say it was him but he was only in the VR bit where we were taking the gunpowder to parliament by boat, and again when we went through time and saw the different ways the Brits celebrate The 5th of November, but I don't believe them. It was kind of scary, but also a lot of fun.
Tomorrow we go to the Tower of London,

  • Tower of London, UK

    May 27, 2024 in England ⋅ ⛅ 16 °C

Today we went to the Tower of London. It is a palace, fortress and jail all in one. The building was started by William The Conqueror, the first king of England, who made the bit in the middle called the White Tower. Kings and queens kept adding to it until it was what it is today. Although it is called the Tower of London, it is not very tall. We found out that it was a menagerie, which is like a zoo. It is not any more, but there were lions, a polar bear and monkeys amongst many others. We then saw the crown jewels. They were very sparkly with all the diamonds, and other gems in it. In the Crown Jewels, there are lots of cool items, like crowns, swords and scepters. The weirdest thing I found was a spoon. It was used to apply Holy Oil to the monarch at their coronation. You might remember watching King Charles's coronation. If you remember that he went behind some curtains and got undressed. Then the priest would have sprinkled him with Holy oil before he got dressed.
We then saw torture machines. There was the thing were you were tied and stretched, which was called the rack, and there were lots of other stuff.
And we saw a lot of ravens. There is a legend that if the ravens ever leave the Tower of London, the kingdom will fall. At the gift shop I bought a tea towel that had all the kings and queens on it in order from William the Conqueror to King Charles the 3rd. I bought it because I like a song called the Monarch Song from Horrible Histories. You can watch the video at the next URL: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSvKc-8frp8
    Did you like it?
We then went to Pizza Express and I had a spaghetti bolognaise.
We are now in our hotel room.
Tomorrow we take a train to Leicester, see you then!

    May 29, 2024 in England ⋅ ☁️ 16 °C

Today it was Uncle Chris's birthday; he turned 74. At 11:00 we went to a gas museum because he was a plumber. He started as an apprentice when he was 22 in 1972 and he retired at 65. We learned that gas was first in public use in 1812. We found out that in England each year about 75 million pounds ($150 million) is spent on research and development. Seventeen hundred people - about half of them science or engineering graduates - are employed in the company's research stations. We also found out that gas lighting was installed in Buckingham Palace only after Queen Victoria requested that it should be tried in the servants' quarters to see if they suffered any ill effects. What Mama found most interesting is that all the old gas pipes were made from Napoleonic guns. Their barrels were slotted together, and the joints were sealed with rags and tar.
Originally gas was created by burning coal. Papa's favourite thing in the museum was the retort, which is the oven to cook or heat the coal which then released the gas that we used. Papa liked this best because he did not know that. Making the coal gas this way was dirty work and lots of workers got very sick.
They found out if the gas from the retort was ready for use by measuring it in units of Therm. Mr Therm, a comic character, became the face of the gas industry.
Coal gas was used until 1974 when it got slowly replaced by natural gas found in the ground. People knew about natural gas in the ground but it took decades for them to figure out how to extract, transport and store the natural gas. Natural gas is a lot cleaner and better for the environment.
All the old dishwashers, hairdryers, and fridges were all powered by gas because there was no such thing as electricity.
I liked how the old hair dryers were like a chute with a big hole in it. I also liked the old dryers that squeezed the water out of the clothes. I learned that when they became powered by gas, a lot of people got their hand stuck, because you used to have to turn the handle by hand.

We then went to a brewery for lunch. It is Leicester's biggest brewery. I had a cheeseburger, and for dessert I wanted to have a brownie sundae but they had run out and we had to chose a cookie dough sundae. After lunch Uncle Chris dropped us off. He went home to go to sleep, we explored the city center. We got lots of stuff. I got a lanyard that could carry my phone and stop pickpockets stealing it, and a new phone case. Papa got some shoes, and Mama got a jumper. We walked home, had dinner and went to sleep.

  • Leicester to Wageningen, The Netherlands

    May 31, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 19 °C

Today we woke up early and at 12 we took a bus to Birmingham airport. We got onto the flight, but we had to wait an hour before we took off because people were vaping. When we finally took off, I got onto my switch. The Netherlands is so small it takes 2 hours driving from East to West, and 4 hours North to South. You have probably heard of Holland, but it is not the same as The Netherlands. Holland is only a part of The Netherlands. When we landed I rushed to Oma and Opa, my Dutch grandparents. We had some food at Burger King, we had to wait ten minutes! We drove for an hour and arrived at Wageningen. Wageningen is a beautiful city in the central east. It is where Papa grew up, and where Oma and Opa live

    June 1, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 20 °C

Today we went to a party for Oma's sister and brother-in-law (the uncle and aunt of my Papa). It was their fiftieth wedding anniversary. I saw my second cousins Sven and Julia. Julia gave me some nice artworks, including Harma beads in the shape of a L. We had lots of courses and ice cream at an ice cream parlor. I had Smurf flavour, Julia had dark cookie and Sven had strawberry. Sven had strawberry because he is lactose intolerant, so he had to chose one that did not have dairy in it.
At the party I finished reading the Iliad and the Odyssey by Homer, an ancient and famous Greek story teller. Mama had set me the task of reading it and I finished it today. The Iliad is about the Trojan war, and how it was started and how it ended with the trojan horse. The Odyssey is about a hero called Odysseus who was the guy that came up with the idea of the trojan horse. When the war ended he sailed back home but came across lots of problems including, a cyclops, angry gods, and sirens. The sirens are sea monsters that sing a song, which drives men crazy with longing. Both stories are around 3000 years old, which is when Homer lived in ancient Greece. That is older than the Bible. Phanpy also enjoyed it.
After we said goodbye to every one, we went home.
At home there was a big bike race that went on into the night.

  • Ouwehands Zoo

    June 4, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Today I went to the zoo with Papa.

It is called Ouwehands Dierenpark. It translates as old hands animal park.

Because it is close to where Oma and Opa live, we have been there before. It's in the city of Rhenen where my Papa was born and lived for the first 11 years of his life.

It has a really cool Giant Panda enclosure called Pandasia. It is in a big Chinese temple. They have bamboo, trees, pathways, and lots of play things. There are two Pandas in Ouwehands. One of them was fed up with life, and the other was nowhere to be seen.

We then went into the Berenbos, which translates as bear forest. You could climb in a rope cage thing and under you there were all the bears. Do not worry, it was really safe.

We then went to see the elephants. One of them was trying to break a door down, because he knew that food was inside.

Next we saw the penguins. There is a tunnel you can go into and stick your head out into a plastic dome. Unfortunately the plastic was really dirty so you could not see out very well.
At the penguins you could get really close to them. We got so close that one tried to eat my shirt.

It was starting to rain so we headed back home.

  • Covid Recovering

    June 5, 2024 in the Netherlands ⋅ ⛅ 18 °C

Over the course of the next few days, Mama and I recovered. I recovered quicker than Mama. Neither Oma or Opa or Papa got covid.

Papa and I did a 1000 piece puzzle. It was about a magic show.

The weather was horrible. It was cloudy and miserable.

I helped Oma and Opa vote in the European parliament elections. They had to vote for some other people as well. The people were on holiday. They had left a note for Oma and Opa that told them who they wanted to vote for.

We are now able to go to Athens and have rebooked our flight from Amsterdam to Athens to Saturday afternoon, instead of the original Tuesday afternoon. That means we are delayed by 4 days. Mama is still recovering but she said we have to go to Athens.

  • Athens, Greece

    June 9, 2024 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 34 °C

Yesterday we arrived in Athens and we got on the train and got to our hotel. It was past midnight when we went to sleep.

Athens is named after the goddess Athena. Her and Poseidon both wanted to be the patron of the city. They both gave a gift and the residents would decide who's was better. Poseidon gave them the first horses and Athena gave them the first olive tree. The residents were more interested in making money and the landscape was really good for growing olives and it would provide wood and food, so they chose Athena.

When we woke up we took the metro to the Acropolis. We couldn't really see much of it because buildings and trees were in the way.

We had lunch. I had a Greek salad, Papa had some dolmades rolls, and Mama had calamari. On my Greek Salad there was a huge chunk of feta cheese.

Mama and I had a siesta and Papa explored Athens a bit more. Neither Mama or I could go to sleep but we tried really hard.

After we gave up on sleeping, we did another community day in pokemon go. It was all about a pokemon called Goomy. I got a lot of shinies, Papa got three and Mama got two.

We then went to the Acropolis again to see the sunset behind the Parthenon It was very beautiful.

On the way back we saw some cool baths made by the ancient Greeks.

We then went home and went to sleep.

  • Poseidon Temple, Sunset tour

    June 10, 2024 in Greece ⋅ ☀️ 28 °C

Today we had a quiet morning because Mama was still not feeling well. In the afternoon we had a sunset tour to the Temple Of Poseidon.

Poseidon is the god of the sea. He was given this temple because of its location next to the sea.

At 4pm we met with our tour guide, Iria and the bus driver was called Sotiris. We stopped at a viewing point. It was at a waterfall, where the water was really dirty but people were still swimming in it.

We stopped at a beach. I had a swim and the water was so salty, you could easily float. After the swim we had dinner there. I had a nice burger with pineapple sauce.

We then went to the Temple of Poseidon and our tour guides gave us the challenge of finding Lord Byron's name carved into the temple. Lots of people had already carved their name in. This is now banned, but not before the whole thing was covered in names.

I found the Lord Byron name at the temple of Poseidon. To be honest I did not find it. Someone else showed it to me. It was on one of the columns on a white bit.

We headed back before it closed and everyone went out after the sunset.

We headed back home and went to sleep. It was really late when we went to sleep.

  • Angels and Demon tour

    June 12, 2024 in Vatican City ⋅ ☀️ 27 °C

Today we woke up early and went to Piazza del Popolo, which means the square of the people. We met up with our tour guide Enzo, we were there for an Angels and Demons tour which went to places in the book (by Dan Brown) and movie.

The first stop was at a church called Basilica Parrocchiale di Santa Maria Del Popolo. Unfortunately it was closed for renovations so we could not go inside. He talked about the church we were at and how it was linked in with the movie. For people reading this blog who have read/seen Angels and Demons it is where the first Cardinal was killed with earth.

We then got onto a bus and went to a different country. We arrived in Saint Peters Square which is in The Vatican City. Vatican is the smallest country in the world. It is only 49 hectares. It is where the Pope lives. He is the head of the Roman Catholic Church. By a crazy coinkidink (coincidence for you commoners) it was Wednesday which is when the Pope comes out for meet and greet. It was chockers. We saw the Pope on the big TV screen and managed to catch a glimpse of him from a distance. Saint Peters Square is where the second Cardinal was killed by air.

We then went to Chiesa Di Santa Maria Della Vittoria by bus. In Italy there are basically no road rules. You do not have to stop for people at zebra crossings and as our guide joked the signs are like suggestions. In Italy I get really scared crossing roads.
At the church we saw a statue by Bernini. It is called the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa. It is where the third Cardinal was killed by fire. Unfortunately Mama and I were not feeling very well so we had to leave the tour early.

We went to a very nice restaurant called Da Cesare where I had a very good lasagna.

I am really struggling with the heat and crowds but it is still amazing.

Tomorrow we go to the Colosseum.

  • The Colosseum tour

    June 13, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Today we woke up early and caught the metro to Colosseo. Can you guess where it took us? What is in Rome and has Coloss in it? That is right, the Colosseum!
When we walked out of the station we instantly saw the Colosseum. We found our tour guide and set off with our group.

First we went into the Palatine Hill. It is where the Roman Emperor lived. We saw all the old ruins and our tour guide told us what would have been there. At one bit he told us about a private circus for the Emperor, and again when we saw a small fountain about the Emperor's gardens.
We also saw the Circus Maximus. It is where the Romans would have had chariot races. They would do seven laps of 1200 meters.

We then went to the Forum Romanum where there were more ruins.

We then got to what everyone was waiting for, Drum roll please, The Colosseum! He told us about it and how the Senators had front row seats with their names carved into their chairs. When a Senator died, they would scrub the name of the dead Senator and carve a new one in the chair.

We learned that to protect the crowds they had special walls so that animals could not escape into the crowd. At the top they had elephant tusks so that if they jumped out they would impale themselves. They also had special roller type things on the walls so that if the animals got a grip, they would roll down.

We found out that the entrances and exits to the Colosseum were called the Vomitoria, which were small corridors where lots of people (60,000 people fitted in the Colosseum) exited. Using this method they could fill the Colosseum in 15 min and empty it in 5 min! This is where we get the word Vomit from.

We explored the Colosseum a bit more and then left to get some food. I had a lasagna, Papa had Quattro Formaggi Gnocchi (four cheese Gnocchi), and Mama had Spaghetti Pomodoro (tomato spaghetti).

I really enjoyed the Colosseum today, and I hope that we can come again.

  • Pompeii

    June 14, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Today we woke up early and went to Termini and caught a train to Naples and then a bus to Pompeii. We met with our private tour guide Benedetto. He showed us around the excavated ancient city of Pompeii.

Pompeii is at the base of Mount Vesuvius, an active volcano in Italy. The city was destroyed by an eruption that was in the year 79. The eruption lasted for three whole days! The people in Pompeii died in one second from the toxic gasses in the air. Once they were dead, ash landed on them and over time hardened around their bodies. The last moments of the persons life were captured for all time by the hardening of the ash. Over time the people inside decomposed leaving lasting impressions. When archeologists found a body in the ground they would identify the find by hearing a hollow sound under where they were digging. They would drill some small holes through to the hollow and then fill the holes with plaster cast. Once set they would continue carefully digging to expose the cast of what had been there. With this process they were able to do this with many organic things like animals and plants.

I think Pompeii is hard to describe. It is very imposing, and you can not comprehend that it was there thousands of years ago.

Did you know that in Pompeii they had takeaway drive through like shops? They had jars set into the benchtop with volcanic rock to keep the food in the jars warm. The Romans were so smart.

Did you know that Romans had holes in their roofs and floors to collect rain water? They had a deeper part of the floor where the water gathered. This part of the house was called the Atrium.

And lastly did you know that the reason they lived near an active volcano is because of the soil. The soil near volcanos is very fertile, which means it is very good for growing plants.

We then went to Herculaneum, a city closer to Mount Vesuvius. In Herculaneum, there are more ruins. These ones are better intact because a volcanic mud called pyroclastic flow would have come after the eruption and solidified, giving better support for the buildings.

The difference between Pompeii and Herculaneum is that while in Pompeii it would have rained ash like snow. The weight of all the ash on the roofs made the roofs collapse. Meanwhile, in Herculaneum the pyroclastic flow would have gone through the houses and solidified, holding up the floors and roofs.

In Herculaneum and Pompeii there are lots of artworks on the walls and floors. You can still see the nice colours that were there long ago. On the floors, they had a type of art called Mosaic. Mosaics are pictures made by gluing tiles to the floor. The tiles are really small and different shapes. The mosaics and artworks are very beautiful. The pictures were showing Roman versions of the Greek myths.

The Romans stole the gods from the Greeks. The Romans admired the Greeks and taught Greek in school. The Romans gave the gods different names.

In Herculaneum, they would have had more time to escape. On the second day it would have been too late. Because it was near the sea, lots of people escaped from the volcano. Only around 300 bodies were found in Herculaneum.

We took a train from Herculaneum to Naples, and Naples to Termini. We then took a metro to our stop.

It was late at night when we got home. We had showers and went to sleep.

Tomorrow we have to get up really early and have family photos taken.

  • Photo tour

    June 15, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 29 °C

Today we woke up really early and went to have our photos taken in front of the Trevi fountain. We arrived at the fountain at 6.30am and it was already really busy.

It was really beautiful. There were lots of people so we had to look out for pickpockets. We met up with our photographer, Tural. At the fountain we threw coins in and Tural took a video of it. Mama accidently threw hers up in the air and caught it again. We got a video of it. We took a lot more photos at the fountain and then we went to the Pantheon.

At the Pantheon we took more photos. I did one were I was a photo-bomber. At the Pantheon there are cool domes and a really big door. The door must have been at least 20 feet tall. The door was 2000yrs old. On the top of the dome there is a hole to let sunlight come through. This hole is called a Oculus (eye of the Pantheon.)

We then went to a small garden up high overlooking the outside of the Colosseum and took more photos. We did lots there. We did a lot of cool poses with the Colosseum in the background.

Tural then showed us a nice cafe called Cafe Roma. I had a chocolate donut and a orange granita.

After the cafe we went back towards the Colosseum to a bus stop. While we waited I went to a shop and bought a cool metal Roman gladiator type helmet. It is small so I can not wear it, but we found a plastic bottle that fitted it perfectly. I called him Gladius.

We then went to the Da Vinci museum in the Piazza De Popolo. You might remember the Piazza from the Angels and Demons tour. It had all kinds of his inventions, and some were interactive. My favourite thing were his flying machines. He had one called the Aerial Screw. This one was interactive. You could turn a handle and the screw made from fabric would turn. You could feel the air coming of it. I think it could have flew.

There was another section were it showed his paintings. I took a photo where it looked like I was stealing the Mona Lisa. There was a immersive room, that showed stuff like The Last Supper.

We then went to a restaurant near our home. Mama and I had a margarita pizza and Papa had a Campagnola. The pizza was really nice. It was a woodfire pizza. The crust was really nice.

We then headed back home and Papa had a siesta. When he woke up we went for a walk around our neighbourhood and got a gelato. I had 2 scoops, chocolate fudge and Stracciatella, and Papa had Stracciatella and Fragola.

We then went back home and went to sleep.

  • Thermal baths of Caracalla

    June 16, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 30 °C

Today we went to some ancient Roman baths. They were called the Thermal Baths of Caracalla. We were going to do a VR experience that showed how it looked all those years ago, but they did not have that anymore.

At the Roman baths there were lots of mosaics. They were everywhere! There were lots of ones that showed Roman myths. There was one about Hercules. I guessed what it was before we saw the sign.

There was a game board that the Romans would have played on. You had to knock rocks into the little holes. This game was like golf.

The baths were Mama's favourite thing.

We then went to a restaurant in the area called Trastevere. I had a spaghetti pomodoro. Papa had a carbonara, and Mama had a chicken Alfredo.

We then went to a place that sold the best granita, still in Trastevere. It is family owned and is famous among locals. It was started by the current owner's grandfather. It was the same booth and everything! I had lemon flavour and Papa had lemon coconut.

We then waited for a while for a bus and then went home.

That was the end of our Rome adventure. Tomorrow we go to Venice.

  • Venice

    June 18, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☀️ 26 °C

Today we explored Venice. In Venice there are no roads. Instead they have canals. They have taxi boats and gondolas going through the canals.

Venice is famous for their masks. You can get cheap ones made of plastic and expensive ones made from Paper Mache. We found a nice shop that sold ones that were hand made. They had animal masks, human face masks, and half face masks like the ones in Phantom of the Opera. We watched the store owner make a cat mask. It was a very slow process. There were hundreds of masks in the shop, how long did it take him to make them all?

We then went to St Marco square for lunch. I had a lasagna, Mama had a margarita and Papa had cuttlefish ink black spaghetti.

I bought two different hats. One was a bucket hat. The other one was a old man/golfer hat. I look really good in the golfer hat.

We then found a place that took photos of your iris. The iris is a part of your eye. It is the part that is colourful. This is something Mama has always wanted to do. Papa's iris had a beauty mark in it. Mama's was a really beautiful brown colour. Mine looked like an explosion and is green. Green is the rarest eye colour. Only 2% of the world have green eyes.

We then walked home, had dinner, and went to sleep.

  • Glass making experience

    June 19, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 27 °C

Today at 12:00 we went and did a glass making experience.

    Fun Facts about Glass:

-Glass is made from melted sand. In Minecraft you make glass by putting sand blocks into a furnace. It then turns into glass. This is like what they do to actually make glass.

-Glass is actually a really slow moving liquid. Glass is called an amorphous, which means it is halfway between a solid and a liquid. Some other amorphous are: Plastic and Rubber.

In the glass making experience, there were three other people. Two of them were from Quebec, Canada and one was from Miami, Florida. The woman from the US made a pair of earrings, the lady from Quebec made a frog, which sadly broke later on, and the man from Quebec helped his wife.

Mama made two coasters because she was to scared to try the glass melting. She made one of a bee, and a colourful blob. Papa made a twisty thing-a-ma-jig, and I made two evil eyes, a cool stone and a coaster.

You have to really concentrate because the glass melts really quickly so you have to turn the glass stick around.

We had to wait a few hours for it to cool down.

While we were waiting we explored Venice a bit more. We found another mask shop. At the shop I bought a mask. It is a half-face mask, and is steampunk themed. It looks really cool.

We then went to a gelato place. It was the best gelato I've ever had! The flavour I chose was Lemon Biscuit.

We headed back to the glass makers and got our stuff.

We caught the water bus called Vaporetto home.

She took lots of photos on bridges and stuff like that. We did lots of posing, but not as much as the first photos.

We ended the tour by getting onto a gondola. She took photos of us getting in the gondola.

Our gondolier was called Tomas. He had been doing it for 16 years. It was very relaxing and calm. We encountered no other gondolas.

About halfway through the ride, he showed us the gondola factory. Every year it only made 1 new one because it mainly focused on restoring and painting gondolas. It is a very historic site. There is a stable number of 440 gondolas in Venice. Each year when they make the new one it is because one has died and gone to gondola heaven.

We finished the ride and went to have breakfast. Unfortunately there was nothing Mama and I liked, so we just gave up on breakfast.

We then were going to do a rooftop terrace but Papa was not feeling very well because of the heat. It was very gloomy and over cast but REALLY hot.
Because of the heat and Papa, we stayed home for a while.

We then went to the island Murano by the water bus. Murano is famous for glass making. They make all sorts of cool stuff. They started doing that in 1219. They make animals, glasses and magnets.

We then had lunch. It was a very nice experience. They had Hawaiian pizza there. That is funny because the Italians think that pineapple on pizza is disgusting, and they only had it for the tourists. The even funnier thing is that it is the best Hawaiian pizza I've ever had!

We then explored Murano a bit more. We did a Pokémon Go route around Murano. What I found really cool is that there were like 50 Magikarp on Murano. Magikarp are usually uncommon, so this was really weird.

It was around 5:00 so we headed home and went to sleep.

  • Murano and Burano

    June 21, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ⛅ 24 °C

Today we went to Murano by boat and went to the same restaurant as yesterday. We went back because it had very nice food and staff.

We looked in more shops and bought presents. We were especially looking for something for Oma as today is her 75th birthday.

We then went to Burano by another boat. Like Murano, Burano is an island. While Murano is famous for its glass, Burano is famous for its colourful houses and lace. Something the two islands have in common is that they were both quieter than Venice.

The houses were every possible colour! There were blue ones, purple ones, and green ones! Some were vibrant, but some were faded and peeling.

At every shop we went to there was lace, lace, lace everywhere! Lace is a kind of fabric.

We looked at some more colourful houses and in some more shops. We bought some more presents and had a gelato.

We then went back to Venice by boat and went to find the narrowest ally way in Venice. I could only just fit in, but could not turn around.

It was a great way to spend our last day in Venice. Tomorrow we go to LUCCA!!!!!!!

  • Driving to Lucca

    June 22, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 24 °C

Today we walked a short distance to the ferry station.

The ferry was very crowded, especially with our luggage. On the ferry Papa nearly got pickpocketed, but he felt it just in time.

We then picked up our hire car and drove for 3 hours.

We arrived in Lucca and went to our Bed and Breakfast. I met the owners of the hotel. One of them is called Costanza and the other is basically my new Nonna, I don't remember her name so I call her Nonna. Our room is called Melograno. It means pomegranate. The building is called La Chiusa delle Monache. It use to be a monastery. There are only 3 rooms available so it is cosy.

We met up with Stijn, Papa's friend and had lunch/dinner with him. He drove here from the Netherlands to have some holiday time with us.

While we were eating a Roman Legion (fake) walked past. It was really cool to be sent back in time to a scene like that. They had a drummer and he was going Boom Boom Boom. There were soldiers and generals.

    They marched through the streets.

    Ciao

  • Vinci

    June 23, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 23 °C

Today we drove to the village of Vinci, which is where Leonardo da Vinci grew up. It was a scenic drive to Vinci. The da Vinci part of his name means of/from Vinci!

We went to a museum that showed some of his inventions. Sadly none were interactive like in Rome. There were some of the same ones as in Rome and some were different.

There were also his anatomy discoveries. I did not go in the anatomy place because it creeped me out. Mama found out that the reason our guts coil around is because if they were straight, the food would fall straight down, not digesting properly. The coiling slows down the process.

I bought a wooden puzzle with interlocking parts that you have to take apart and make it again. I have managed to take it apart, but not make it yet :)

We then drove a bit further to see Leonardo's birthplace. While we do not know where Leonardo lived as a child, we know where he was born. He was born in a house on the outskirts of Vinci in the hills overlooking the town. The house is still there. It is made of stone and is very old. The area is very beautiful and breathtaking.

I really enjoyed today and I learned so much about Leonardo da Vinci.

  • The Rainy Day

    June 24, 2024 in Italy ⋅ ☁️ 21 °C

Today was forecast to be rainy.

We walked to the visitor centre of Lucca. On the way we went past the mint museum and we thought it might be something interesting. We had to run into the Visitor centre because it started pouring down.

We had to wait in the centre for over an hour before we could leave without getting drenched.

We then met Stijn at a restaurant. It sold pizzas and pastas. It was called the Varrone Pasta. They made their own pasta at the front.

We then went home while Stijn and Papa went to the beach to explore. They got very lucky because it got sunny and turned into a lovely day. Now we know where to go swimming later this week.

    Bye
